For good and for bad, John's a very average dude, in the sense that yeah, he thinks it's cool that he gets to help people but it's cooler that he gets to prove that he can do X heroic thing. As we all saw in tfatws, he doesn't have Steve's admirable integrity. John's a normal guy, like you, like me, who tries to do good but can fuck up massively.

And I think John could have had a very normal, happy life, with his beautiful wife and their beautiful son and what not, but I also believe that he has this very deep seated insecurity of not being good enough, which is ultimately his undoing.

And I was thinking all of this bc Olivia must have seen how he progressively became more and more fixated in his job, to the point that when John loses the Captain America title, he seems to lose his entire identity. The man she loved became a husk of himself. He just couldn't move on.

(I also think that their kid is really young. They probably have the conversation to have it around the time John became cap. Probably John worked for Valentina to get a clean slate so his kid would be proud of him-- which he obviously doesn't think it's going to happen if he stays as the disgraced cap)

And this is all to say that I don't think Olivia would like very much the US Agent thing because in her eyes the circle is repeating itself (even if John now has the support of his friends, who deeply understand how deep trauma runs and also. Let's face it probably John starts therapy at some point, like the rest of the team).

And also I don't think that she'd like Bob a lot (not bc he's a guy! But bc in her eyes it's, again, the circle repeating itself. She sees Bob and thinks about Lemar and wonders how John is going to break the moment Bob gets hurt. Which. Let's say we're in a point in which no one knows that Bob is Sentry / The void).

In general I think that she's like 75% sure that John is not su*cidal (bc... Has John shared that with her?) but also that he wouldn't mind d*ing as a hero even if that means that he doesn't get to see their son growing up.

And this turned really sad, but I just wanted to parse their relationship in a way it makes sense in my head, and also share the idea of: John is terrified about telling Olivia that he's dating Bob without realizing that he's been idly mentioning him in every single phone call between them for months now.

My headcannon is that Bob is considered in the Thunderbolts custody by the goverment, and for the safety of society they legally cannot leave him fully alone. At least one of them has to always be within a few rooms of him, ready to jump in and help regulate him if needed to keep his powers from flaring up to badly.

For all my Voidwalker heads, this gives so much time that they'd be forced to hang out with each other. If it were just them and the gym was on a different floor from him, John would have to drag Bob down with him to work out. If Bob wanted to go to the bookstore or just for a walk, John would be forced to go on little domestic almost dates with him. Think about it.

Also, John realizes that Ava & Yelena are right!!! and that Bob has a bit of a crush on him the moment he notices that he's uh. Very distracting for Bob. Like, I picture Bob craving touch and at the same time not knowing what the hell to do with himself once he receives it, and John being really liberal with his touch.

So I imagine Bob totally loosing the thread of whatever John's saying when he's correcting his posture during training because he's right behind his back and Bob can see his very nice arms. Or also, John thinks he's helping Bob in a gala bc the guy looks exhausted and John is keeping the conversation going on his own and the guy hasn't heard a word of what he's saying because John has an arm around his shoulders.

((when a mission goes wrong and Ava and Yelena see Bob half leaning on John, John playing with his hair as he mutters things that clearly Bob is not fully paying attention to, well. They're not commenting on it. Not now))
