Do you think you and Toby have a happy, fulfilled life ahead of you if you two stay together and decide to get married, as I assume is the plan?

“I don’t know. We’re still young and marriage is still a thing far into the future for us.”

“I wouldn’t purposely lead Andy on. Never. That’s not the kind of person I am, but I understand why’d people think so. This will sound cliche, but I love Andy and he’s one of my best friends since freshman year. I care a lot about him. Do I enjoy his attention? I feel terrible for saying this, but, yes. Of course. Who wouldn’t? Andy’s a great guy and I appreciate to have someone as supportive and considerate as him in my life. I have.. this big need to to protect him and I always figured it’s the thought of him with someone who might not value him for all he is, quirks, flaws and all of that, that’s bothering me. After Vegas, I’m not sure. Maybe you’re right, maybe I don’t want him giving his attention to someone else.”

“ I’m not saying you’re imprudent, I’m just saying that these things require good planning. Looking at it from all angles, being prepared for unexpected turns of events. I do trust you. Of course I trust you, junior. But it’s not so much about that. It’s about knowing the risks that more often than not have nothing to do with you or what you do. It’s often the others. It’s the same danger with motorcycles – you can be the best motorcyclist in the world, but someone else makes a mistake and you’re the one who’ll get the brunt of it. Do you understand that? But tell you what, I’ll talk to your mom about it, okay? ”

“ And you gotta promise me that, Chels. You’re not staying in random places that you haven’t checked out first. There’s shady people everywhere. I’d feel better if Toby came along with you. Ah, I have to say I don’t like the Kellerman kid behind the wheel.. Any way I can get you to not get in a car that he’s steering if it has to be the roadtrip? ”

“I promise you that, Dad. We wouldn’t go to shady places, we aren’t as imprudent as you make us out to be. I’ll talk to Toby about it again when I’m in my room. Dad. We haven’t decided yet on who’s actually driving, but Andy’s a good driver, okay? Do you trust me?”

“ But there you see it, Chels. It’s good to think that far ahead. It’s good to have a plan and a plan B. I’m sure you didn’t think of that until I mentioned it. Who else is driving? Are you sure you guys don’t just want to get a flight from Chicago? ”

“We’ll look into it as soon as possible, okay? Besides Dani and I, Emma, Andy, Charlie and few other people. Toby hasn’t made up his mind yet, but he’ll probably be coming too. Mm, nope. We planned a roadtrip. Flights are also a lot more expensive on such short notice, so.”

“ Those are.. good points you’re making. It is pretty spontaneous, it’s also quite a drive to California. Older cousins sounds good. And having accommodation planned is important. What about accommodation on route? You can’t drive for three days straight, you will need to stop to sleep. You’re not thinking of staying in random roadside motels off the Interstate, right? So what would that look like? ”

“Of course not, Dad. We’re alternating most of the time, and when we do stop to sleep, we’ll drive into the nearest town to find a B&B or something. We haven’t thought that far ahead that yet, but we’re working on it. Just wanted to get everyone’s permission first before we continue any further planning. We’re a big group.”

“He’s a really good guy. I do, actually. The group’s planning a roadtrip to California in two weeks. It’s pretty spontaneous I know, but hear me out. Dani has older cousins there. We’d have a good accommodation not so far away at a reasonable price.”
