Bio-economy needs innovation in supply chain
Most, if not all, major chemical producers and major agriculture combines are looking at the potential for renewable raw materials to replace petrochemical feedstocks, in some areas of their operations at least.
Chemical companies are striving to embrace bio-based production to ensure their long-term sustainability. But there are many issues to resolve and questions to answer
And it is not just the majors that are investing heavily into the required technologies. Small, hi-tech start-ups are often leading the way in technology terms. Many have been lured in and supported by the huge political push in North America and Europe for alternative fuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel. But increasingly, these firms are focusing on devising routes to chemicals from biomass, as the market and prospects for further fuels investment stalls due to concerns over subsidies and the nonfood use of crops. The stimulus from the fuels sector to the use of renewable raw materials to make existing and new chemicals and materials has been beneficial, however. Not only has it kick-started production on a scale not seen before, but it has begun to show how the logistics of using crop-derived materials might be managed to enable widespread production of chemical inter-mediates and products such as polymers, surfactants, solvents and lubricants.
"The stimulus from the fuels sector to the use of renewable raw materials... has been beneficial"
The problem is that in the main, the feedstocks - starches, sugars, cellulose and oils and fats - are produced in rural areas, away from industrial production centres, and in low density. Thus the bulky raw materials have to be transported over some distances, adding significant costs and environmental impacts. Before the bio-based economy can truly begin to play a significant part in industrial output, such problems will need to be solved at technical and economic levels. Another major challenge to overcome is to bring bio-based products to the market in a profitable way. The goal of many companies is to develop higher value-added bioproducts, but before these can be successfully introduced, companies have to produce lower value-added products, simply to fund development costs and to prove the technologies involved. The slow adoption of biopolymers competing against well established petrochemical-derived materials is a salient example. With costs driven down over many years of production experience, conventional polymers are cost-effective in their areas of application. Bio-polymers have to compete on niche performance benefits or on their green credentials. Perhaps a more rational way, and one that is being used by several technology start-ups, is to produce bio-based intermediates, such as ethylene and butanediol, that can be used in conventional reactions to produce existing products. There is then little or no market development needed and the bioroute has only to prove it can make biointermediates that are identical to oil-based intermediates. The drawback here, say some, is that the established chemical industry in Western economies will see this as a way of going half-way down the green route, and will still operate its large chemical plants to produce conventional products albeit from renewable resources. The risk is that emerging economies and technologies will leapfrog them to develop truly green products that are more competitive in the longer term. India and China are certainly looking at bio-based production and, given raw material availability and an innovative approach, could certainly produce some interesting and surprising developments. A third route, now being opened up, is to use bio-based feedstocks to produce a range of novel intermediates that can then be used to produce products in well-known families. Thus succinic acid is receiving a lot of attention at the moment and can be used in the production of polyurethanes, coatings, solvents, thermoset resins and so on. Further into the future lies the concept of the biorefinery, whereby a range of bio-raw materials will be converted using a variety of techniques into a range of chemical intermediates, ready for downstream conversion. This approach is today still in basic research but has very large potential. QUESTIONS BUT NO ANSWERS? All of the above raises as many questions as it does answers. What makes a location competitive for green chemistry, and which routes are the most promising in terms of technology and market reception? Can a bio-based economy be established on imported feedstocks or should these be locally available? Is fermentation of sugars the best route forward or production via bio-syngas? Even more fundamentally, should companies start investing in technologies and market introductions even before government incentives or legislations are fully in place? And how should agricultural business chains collaborate with the chemical and materials industry and the sector of transport and logistics? Later this month, ICIS and NOM, the Investment and Development Agency for the northern Netherlands, are hosting a high-level Roundtable in Amsterdam to discuss many of these issues. The outcomes of the discussion will be reported in a future issue of ICIS Chemical Business. For more information on NOM and how it aids investment in Northern Netherlands

REVIEW: Josie Maran 100% Pure Organic Argan Oil
Kristin reviews a multi-purpose beauty tool - Josie Maran 100% Pure Organic Argan Oil
Josie Maran Pure 100% Argan Oil ($14 for .5 oz bottle) has so many uses. It protects, moisturizes and nourishes your skin and hair, keeps cuticles clean, makes a great foot and bath soak, AND softens dry elbows and knees. Josie Maran's website says "Historically, Argan oil has been used to treat acne, stretch marks and skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis! ". She even has a whole Argan Beauty page devoted to this amazing oil! I used Josie Maran's 100% Pure Argan Oil 15ml bottle solely on my hair and face for the last month. I loved the little dropper that measured to the exact amount needed to put all over my face, neck and decolleté...or my entire head of long thick hair. You will need about half that if your hair is short or thinner.
Perfect sized dropper
Perfect sized amount for whole face, neck, and decolleté or all of my long hair
I doubled up the Argan Oil impact by using a Ricky's Arganplus comb with Argan oil built in it. Jenni already reviewed these here. I love them! The Rickycare ArganPlus comb I used was the the wide comb on sale right now for $3.49 here! I highly suggest picking one up for the summer. The wide comb allows you to spread the Argan Oil throughout your hair evenly. I have thick long hair, so a whole dropper full is needed. However, even if you have shorter hair, your hair will eat it up! It just depends if the initial greasiness bothers you or not. Just keep combing through for a few minutes and that greasy texture will go away. After combing it through and letting it soak in and dry, your hair will just be moisturized, shiny and healthy! It has done wonders for my split ends in the last couple weeks without getting a haircut! I like to do the Argan Oil treatment with semi-wet hair and use especially if I am at the beach or pool. I just give my hair a rinse with fresh water first to wash away the salt or chlorine and comb the oil right through to keep my hair hydrated and prevent dry ends. After I comb it through my hair, I let it dry and keep it on my hair until I take a shower in the evening and wash it out. If you only use a few drops, this oil is great to protect your hair from styling and blow drying. I prefer to use it as more of a treatment though.
On my skin, I just take the whole dropper size amount, rub it between my palms, then apply to my clean face and neck. Never apply this over any dirt or makeup on your face, or you will clog up your pores! This will also seem greasy on your skin at first, but then will set in after about a half hour and your skin will feel soft and smooth! I definitely noticed more radiance to my skin and softness after using this a few times a week. I don't sleep with it on...I just use it on days when I don't wear makeup! This formula of Argan Oil definitely seems more potent in regards to skin moisturization and the change in texture of my skin than any other generic healthfood store brands of Argan Oil I've tried or any other moisturizers containing some form of it. There seem to be so many "Argan Oil" formulations on the market today in skin and hair products, but it is difficult to know really how much actual argan oil is in the product. If you want the full Argan Oil benefits, definitely go for the 100% Pure Organic formula from Josie Maran. It's purely fantastic!
Josie Maran's 100% Argan Oil leaving a nice radiant sheen on my face!

REVIEW: Rouge Bunny Rouge Eye Shadow Duo "A Major - F is Minor"
Jenni reviews two beautiful eye shades from Rouge Bunny Rouge's  When Birds Are Singing... Long-lasting Duo Eye Shadow - A Major - f is Minor
This review is PART 3 of a three part feature where I review the products I used to create my own "Rouge Bunny Rouge Look." Last week I tested out a few of my recent Rouge Bunny Rouge makeup purchases, by creating a 'casual daytime look' for work.  I  received so many compliments from people asking me about the makeup was wearing, that I decided to take a few pictures and review my entire Rouge Bunny Rouge look! The products I used:
Hues of Enchantment Color Burst Lipstick "THE PLOT THICKENS" (PART 1 - review here)
For Love of Roses Original Skin Blush "GRACILIS" (PART 2 - review here)
When Birds are Singing... Long-lasting Duo Eye Shadow in "A MAJOR-f is MINOR" (current review)
I also used Fine-spun Light Luminous Skin Wand to conceal my under-eye dark circles, and I highlighted my face for a slightly bronzed glow, by using Rouge Bunny Rouge's As If It Were Still Summer...Bronzing Glow Powder "AT GOLDCOMBE BAY." But Kristin and I will be reviewing this bronzer together, in a couple weeks when we test out more Rouge Bunny Rouge looks. A few pictures of my 'Rouge Bunny Rouge Look' wearing all three products...
When Birds Are Singing...Long Lasting Eye Shadows are, in my opinion, one of Rouge Bunny Rouge's standout beauty products. Their powder eye shadows are extraordinary!  I find the formula to be incredibly lightweight and shockingly creamy for a powder.  They melt into the eyes for a truly ‘second-skin’ look and feel.  If you enjoy wearing eye shadows and value each of your makeup purchases – where you prefer spending your money on the ‘best of the best’ and highest-quality eye shadows – than Rouge Bunny Rouge’s Long-lasting eye shade formulas are an ABSOLUTE MUST-HAVE! Here is what Rouge Bunny Rouge says about their Eye Shadow...
A MAJOR - F IS MINOR
A Major-f is Minor Color Description:  Palest golden wheat, paired with a delicately frosted muted mauve-brown with a subtle gold accent
The Duo Eye Shade “A MAJOR – fis MINOR” is an excellent ‘first purchase’ for anyone interested in trying out Rouge Bunny Rouge eye shadows.  Not only do you get two beautiful shades in one, but when blended together you in fact get three shades!
Here are some pictures of each shade in the duo, as well as blended together...
Below is a picture I took in my bathroom right after I applied both shades in the Duo, as well as blended together...
Also, the three shades, this Duo provides, are so versatile and wearable on anyone’s eyelids. They create gorgeous depth and are easily buildable. They come to life in the light with a lively iridescent finish and a slight shimmer. Best of all - Rouge Bunny Rouge's LONG-lasting eye shadows do, in fact, last all day long!
When Birds Are Singing...Long-lasting Eye Shadow Duo - $33.00
All Rouge Bunny Rouge products are available at Zuneta and Beauty Habit

REVIEW: Sunday Riley Cashmere SPF 30+
Jenni reviews BFF Beauty’s ‘Best Mineral-Physical SPF’ pick for summer 2012 – Sunday Riley’s Cashmere SPF 30+
In our recent "Best-of" Sunscreen Post (review HERE,), where we pick our favorite SPF’s for 2012, Sunday Riley Cashmere SPF 30+ Advanced Sun Defense is BFF Beauty Girls 'best-of' choice for mineral & physical Sunscreen. To state the obvious, we love this product! But before I get into my actual review, let’s take a look at what exactly a “Physical" sunscreen is? Chemical Sunscreens Chemical sunscreens contain synthetic chemical substances that absorb UV rays. PROS: They are colorless, odorless and feel lighter on the skin. CONS: They can generate free radicals which can lead to skin aging. They also cause allergic reaction and irritation. Physical Sunscreens Physical Sunscreens, also known as sun blocks, contain ingredients like titanium oxide or zinc oxide which physically block and scatter ultraviolet radiation. PROS: They offer protection against UVA and UVB rays and don’t cause free radicals. It is unlikely that they will cause allergies or irritations because they don’t get absorbed. CONS: Their formula is quite thick and they tend to leave a white cast on skin. But the main problem with physical sunscreen is that, because of their formulation, it is difficult to apply the sufficient amount (1 tablespoon). If you apply less, then they won’t offer enough protection.
Why did the BFF Beauty Girls pick Sunday Riley’s Cashmere for ‘Best Physical Sunscreen’? Unlike most physical Sunscreens we’ve tried, Cashmere SPF 30+ is a completely sheer 100% mineral sunscreen that miraculously glides on smoothly, without leaving a dreaded white overcast! The texture is like no other sunscreen on the market, it feels more like a silky-smooth, luxurious anti-aging cream rather than your typical SPF. It is a lightweight formulation that has a non-greasy, semi-matte finish and it feels fantastic to touch! Swatches of Cashmere on my leg...
BLENDED
Swatches of Cashmere on my hand...
BLENDED
BLENDED
A few pictures of the elegant and modern packaging, and the informative labelling...
Here are a few of Cashmere’s ingredients that make this sunscreen so phenomenal:
Cashmere SPF 30+ is a water-based formula, rather than oil based.
This protein-enriched formula uses Cashmere Protein which strengthens the epidermis and simultaneously softens the skins’ surface.
Both Wheatgrass and Ginseng detoxify and energize your skin.
Ellagic Acid (from pomegranates) helps treat and prevent hyper pigmentation
**TIP** If you want to bolster the SPF, mix it with Riley’s Juno Transformative Lipid Serum Oil (see my review HERE).  I love to mix my Cashmere and Juno together! Not only is Juno packed with antioxidants and natural UV shields, but mixing it together or layering Cashmere on top of Juno provides for such a beautiful streak-free finish with a dewy glow. Cashmere SPF 30+ Product Description: Purpose Finally a powerful sunscreen with a luxurious texture and finish. 100% Mineral Sun Protection (Titanium Dioxide), provides photo stable sun defense without white streaks or oiliness. Fortifies and cushions the skin with Cashmere Protein. Skin is softer, more youthful, and protected. Unique Properties No chemical sunscreens or petrochemicals. Completely photo stable. Sheer, weightless, multi-functional protection from sun and pollution. Available at: Barneys NY, The Dermstore, Sephora $125.00 - 50 ml FINAL THOUGHT: Cashmere SPF 30 is the most expensive sunscreen that I have ever bought or have even come across before.  Priced at $125.00 (50 ml) for a sunscreen, makes it hard for me to recommend Cashmere SPF 30 or even justify the purchase for myself.  However, I feel like I’ve tried every mineral/physical sunscreen on the market, and I can say with 100% conviction – Sunday Riley’s Cashmere is far superior to every other product out there.  It is without a doubt the BEST physical sunscreen available!  Now I realize that not everyone is looking for ‘the best’ physical sunscreen, and would prefer not to spend so much money on SPF.  But if you only like to wear a mineral/physical sunblock and you've been constantly disappointed by the thick, heavy and hard to blend physical options out there? Have no fear, because Sunday Riley has come to the rescue with a truly outstanding physical sunscreen! And it's worth every penny!! Additionally, BFF Beauty Girls feel it's important to note that we have chosen Cashmere SPF 30 for our 'Best-of' physical sunscreen because of its' effortless application, smooth & lightweight consistency and overall luxurious formula.  We do not review, rate or make any claims regarding the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of this sunscreen or any sunscreen.  If you are looking for the strongest UVA/UVB protection, please refer to FDA approved sunscreen ingredients and their UV filter ranges.

About the Founder (Alex):
In the Fall of 2010, Alexandra, founder of Cabbages & Kings gave birth to her first child, Luella. With winter just around the corner, she ventured out in search of warm, durable, yet fashionable clothing, only to be bombarded with scratchy wools and lifeless fleeces. But out of this frustration came an idea. “Why not design and make what I’m searching for?! As they say- if you want it done right, do it yourself!” And so Cabbages & Kings was born.
Alexandra has been in the fashion and entertainment industry for over 25 years, having started her career with the Ford Modelling Agency at the age of eight. She went on to graduate cum laude from Skidmore College where she double majored in Business Administration and Anthropology. It was here that she first became fascinated with Andean culture, specifically the centuries long traditions of weaving and hand-knits; this is what served as inspiration for the debut collection of her infant and children’s accessories line.
About Cabbages & Kings:
The compelling color combinations and patterned designs of Cabbages & Kings evoke a sense of whimsical play suitable for the taste of parent and child alike.
Customers will initially be drawn to the uniqueness of the line but ultimately be won over by the versatility and quality of each piece.
Cabbages & Kings is a strong supporter of fair trade and strives to build bridges between artisans of excellence and socially responsible consumers. REVIEW: Rouge Bunny Rouge For Love of Roses Original Skin Blush "Gracilis"
Jenni reviews: Rouge Bunny Rouge For Love of Roses Original Skin Blush - Gracilis
This review is PART 2 of a three part feature where I review the products I used to create my own "Rouge Bunny Rouge Look." Last week I tested out a few of my recent Rouge Bunny Rouge makeup purchases, by creating a 'casual daytime look' for work.  I received so many compliments from people asking me about the makeup I was wearing, that I decided to take a few pictures and review my entire Rouge Bunny Rouge look!
The products I used:
Hues of Enchantment Color Burst Lipstick "THE PLOT THICKENS" (Part 1 - review here)
For Love of Roses Original Skin Blush "GRACILIS" (Part 2)
When Birds are Singing... Long-lasting Duo Eye Shadow in "A MAJOR-f is MINOR" (Part 3)
For Love of Roses Original Skin Blush - GRACILIS
Gracilis Color Description: Medium rose with a hint of mauve, for a natural glow - Best suited to pale, cool complexions
For Love of Roses Original Skin Blush in "Gracilis" is another favorite RBR product of mine. It's simply spectacular! The quality of the formula will astonish you, seriously don't be fooled by the 'cutesy' floral imprints on the surface - this is NOT a little girls "lets play with fun makeup" type of blush, Gracilis is a sophisticated and luxurious formula that would put many well known high-end brand blushes to shame.
Here is what Rouge Bunny Rouge says about their Original Skin Blushes...
Gracilis is a powder blush, but it's so finely milled that it glides on like cream blush, and feels silky soft to the touch. I couldn't believe how smooth the finish was on both my cheeks and fingers!
For application I used the Rouge Bunny Rouge Blusher Brush 002, and I must say I was just as impressed with the quality of the brush as I was with the blush.  Just a few dabs into the powder, on each side of the brush, resulted in an effortless and even application.
BLUSHER BRUSH 002
Once applied the color is equally spectacular, and even though the color description suggests "best suited to pale, cool complexions," I have neither, and I think the color is perfect for me.  When I arrive in NY (on July 1st), for the remainder of the summer, Kristin and I will be 'playing' with all of our Rouge Bunny Rouge products to create different looks, and so I am anxious to see how Gracilis wears on her 'cool' skin tone.  I'm sure it will be beautiful, but we will post our results with more reviews for you all to see as well. Here are some lightly applied (two strokes at most) swatches of Gracilis on my arm...
Below are some pictures of me wearing "Gracilis" with nothing else on my face except moisturizer. I purposely applied more blush here, than I did on my arm, so you could see how the color builds ...
For Love of Roses Original Skin Blush - $31.00

SPECIAL: Alex's Homemade Recipes - Part 3
Alex shares another homemade skincare secret...her recipe for a refreshing and rejuvenating facial toner!
Okay if you're on a budget and you can't afford expensive skincare...it's time to raid your fridge and cupboards and naturally rejuvenate your skin and hair! Make your own beauty products...chemically free! Most beauty products contain pthalates, formaldehyde, parabens and other chemicals that have been shown to harm animals in lab tests, and which are being phased out in Europe in favor of less toxic alternatives. Prenatal exposure to pthalates, for example, has been linked to liver and kidney damage and effects on baby boys' reproductive organs. So here is the third beauty recipe that I have tried and LOVE! Feel free to leave us comments, and let us know what you think...More recipes to come!
CUCUMBER & HONEY FACIAL TONER
INGREDIENTS:
1 medium Cucumber, peeled and cut up into pieces
2 tsp. Honey
DIRECTIONS:
Puree cucumber in a blender or with Cuisinart.
Line a sieve with cheesecloth and set the sieve over a glass bowl or measuring cup.
Pour the cucumber puree through the sieve and let it stand for 15 minutes for the juices to drip into the bowl.
Pour the clear juice into a clean bottle and add honey.
TO USE:
Shake the bottle and saturate a cotton pad with the lotion.
Sweep over face, neck and chest morning and night, and let it air dry (about 3 to 4 minutes).
Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 1 week. Makes about 1/2 cup.
ABOUT THE INGREDIENTS
Honey:  Honey is a natural humectant and retains moisture in the skin, making it a great ingredient for those with dry skin. At the same time it is good for blemish-prone skin because of its antibacterial properties.
Cucumber: The antioxidants and silica present in cucumber help to lighten the dark skin and rejuvenate tired, dull looking skin. It will also help open pores, leaving your skin supple and radiant. Fresh cucumber juice along with honey if applied to the skin on a regular basis can act as great toner for your skin and also lighten your complexion.
This was Alex’s third special feature post on ‘Homemade Skincare’ that is one, out of many of her favorite recipes for beautiful skin. View Alex's first recipe of the Pumpkin & Papaya Enzyme Mask (here), and her second recipe for an Avocado & Carrot Facial Mask (here.)
She will be posting several more recipes, along with pictures of her concoctions...so make sure you check back frequently to see all of her fabulous homemade beauty recipes and more pictures of Alex “the organic skincare chemist” in action!
**SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT** Check BFF Beauty Blog tomorrow for some very special news from our Beauty BFF, Alex...we'll give you a little hint in the meantime...New Mommy's will not want to miss this news, it's something BEAUTY-ful for your precious little ones!

REVIEW: Rouge Bunny Rouge Hues of Enchantment Color Burst Lipstick "The Plot Thickens"
Jenni reviews a beautiful lipstick from Rouge Bunny Rouge's "Nest of Plenty" Look - The Plot Thickens, along with Rouge Bunny Rouge Original Skin Blush - Gracilis, and Long-lasting Duo Eye Shadow - A Major f is Minor
Last week I wore Rouge Bunny Rouge Hues of Enchantment Color Burst Lipstick "THE PLOT THICKENS" to work, and received so many compliments from people asking me what lipstick and makeup I was wearing, that I decided to take a few pictures and review my entire Rouge Bunny Rouge look! The products I used:
Hues of Enchantment Color Burst Lipstick "THE PLOT THICKENS" (Part 1 - current review)
For Love of Roses Original Skin Blush "GRACILIS" (Part 2 - review coming)
When Birds are Singing... Long-lasting Duo Eye Shadow in "A MAJOR-f is MINOR" (Part 3 - review coming)
I also highlighted my face for a slightly bronzed glow, by using Rouge Bunny Rouge's As If It Were Still Summer...Bronzing Glow Powder "AT GOLDCOMBE BAY." But Kristin and I will be reviewing this bronzer together, in a couple weeks when we test out more Rouge Bunny Rouge looks. Below are a few pictures of my first 'Rouge Bunny Rouge Look' wearing all three products, including my coworkers favorite lipstick - The Plot Thickens...
Before I get in to my review of The Plot Thickens, here is what Rouge Bunny Rouge has to say about their lipsticks...
THE PLOT THICKENS
Color Description: Creamy, satin-finish pale rosy nude-beige
Hues of Enchantment Colour Burst Lipstick in "The Plot Thickens" has quickly become my 'go to' everyday lipstick. I've only had this precious shade for a couple weeks and I already know that I'll be repurchasing it by the end of summer - that's how often I use it!
I agree with the color description "creamy, satin-finish pale rosy nude-beige," but I would also say that it has a brilliant chameleon quality to it. Because when the sunlight hits your face, your lips glisten with a shimmering pearl effect. I wouldn't use 'silver' or 'gold' to describe this shimmer, it's more like a cream-beige frost, but whatever the color - it's gorgeous!
I also read on another beauty blog (and I'm sorry I don't remember where, and I cant find the review to credit) describe The Plot Thickens as "a muted bubblegum pink with a slight frost" - which I think is pretty much on point.
I recommend this shade for any ones skin tone, as it really is the perfect nude lipstick. Additionally, it's an excellent shade to wear with casual makeup or with a more intense 'night out' look. Case in point, The Plot Thickens was used for Rouge Bunny Rouge's 'Nest of Plenty' look, with "an emphasis on a light smoky eye" using a pale lip color allows the look to be wearable throughout the day or night.
See 'Nest of Plenty' look below...
I have worn The Plot Thickens alone and with my Rouge Bunny Rouge Forever Yours...Long-lasting Lip Pencil in "Vasco." I love how it turns out with or without my lip pencil, see pictures below...

Today our Guest Writer and Beauty BFF, Carly, will be reviewing the TATA HARPER Regenerating Cleanser.
Carly and her baby boy, Julian (AKA The Ladies Man)
Carly Says... The Tata Harper Cleanser has a very moisturizing texture, (almost like lotion), and at the same time it has a very fine-grain exfoliate feel to it. What a perfect combo for summer skin issues! In the summer my skin tends to dry out and it also needs light exfoliating daily--due to the buildup of the dead surface skin from being in the sun, and dry, hot air. Tata Harper cleanser both moisturizes and exfoliates while cleansing. I have been using it each night as a cleanser in the shower, and have noticed my skin seems much smoother, fresher looking and doesn't seem to have the buildup of dead skin that it would typically have this time of year.
It's a 100% natural product, using ingredients such as pomegranate--which not only hydrates, but also acts as an anti-oxidant, and honestly, can your skin ever have too many anti-oxidants? It also contains White Willow Bark--a wonderful, natural ingredient which balances sebum production. Here a few swatches of the cleanser...
Typically, I tend to stray away from a cleanser that feels more like a moisturizer because I feel it doesn't cleanse my skin deeply enough (I wear a foundation for makeup daily, and I also sweat a lot during the day). Tata Harper Cleanser honestly seems to work in really cleansing and refreshing my skin, and at the same time exfoliating and moisturizing it. I am also typically, extremely hesitant, and very picky when it comes to any kind of exfoliater. My skin is annoyingly sensitive to harsh exfoliants and if I'm not careful and use something too harsh, my skin will immediately break out around my mouth and on my cheeks. Tata Harper Cleanser had me immediately interested from the first sample I squeezed into my hand, and rubbed between my fingers. I could tell right away that it truly has the perfect texture for balancing, moisturizing, and gently exfoliating for sensitive skin types. I will continue to use this product without hesitation, and with full confidence that my delicate facial skin is in good hands!! Product Description TATA HARPER Regenerating Cleanser - This gentle non-foaming cleanser freshens the skin’s appearance as it cleanses, without drying it out. Pomegranate extract is a powerful antioxidant and helps hydrate the skin, while promoting the regeneration of healthy new skin cells. Apricot Seed powder deeply cleanses your pores and removes dead skin cells to leave your face glowing, while the sebum balancing properties of White Willow Bark extract exfoliate the skin. The delicate bittersweet Neroli blends harmoniously with the fresh citrus notes of grapefruit, and these essential oils gently cleanse, refresh and balance your skin. Available at tataharperskincare.com ($75 125ml/4.22 oz) or amazon.com ($50 50ml/1.7oz)

Summer Must-have Product! Sunday Riley Modern Lip Color Lipstick "Rebel Rose"
A fun and vibrant lip color that will drive the boys crazy this summer! Sunday Riley Modern Lip Color Lipstick in "Rebel Rose"
This is my husbands favorite lipstick that I wear, and he is not someone who likes loud makeup or aggressively bright colors, but he thinks "Rebel Rose" is HOT!!!
Rebel Rose is described as a bright blue-based magenta pink shade, but I would describe it more as a vibrant pink that pops with magenta in the sun and softens with rose in the shade, and all the while glistens with purple undertones. Here are some pictures of Rebel Rose up close in different lighting...
I love it! and when your skin has a sun-kissed summer glow - its perfection! Here are some swatches of Rebel Rose on my arm...
I also took a ton of pictures on my lips, and again in all different lighting, so you can see the ever-so subtle purple undertones and how the pink shades "pop" in different light...
Like I said earlier, my husband loves this shade and since he is a man who doesn't notice 'pretty things' that often, its safe to say that your man (or anyone you are trying to impress) will love this color too! I think this Rebel Rose is gorgeous as well, and so many of Rileys Lipstick colors are stunning!  Read my previous review of Sunday Riley's Modern Lip Color Lipsticks in "Shakespeare" and "Duchess" (HERE.) Here is the spectacular color palette of  Sunday Riley Modern Lip Color Lipsticks...
In addition to the fabulous color palette, Sunday Riley's lipstick formula is one of the best out there.   Riley's lipsticks have vitamin & antioxidant enriched formulas and are created with a highly advanced pigment delivery system.  The finishes of these modern lip colors are spectacular, and they feel simply luxurious on.   They are also designed to last all night long! Here's what Sunday Riley Says... "
An added bonus, these lipsticks are great to wear during the day because they contain Titanium Dioxide which will protect your lips from the sun.
Available at dermstore.com and barneys.com ($32.00)

NEW PRODUCT! Cetaphil DERMACONTROL Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30
Jenni reviews a brand new, lightweight moisturizer with SPF for acne-prone skin.
As I explained in a previous SPF review on sunscreens with added hydrating properties (DDF vs. VICHY review here), I like to use an 'all-in-one' sunscreen moisturizer for my morning walks with my two dogs.  Well when I recently tried to purchase another bottle of my preferred moisturizing SPF "VICHY Aqua Thermal Hydrator SPF 30," my local Walgreen's was all out of stock.  Instead of trying another drugstore for this VICHY product, I randomly decided to browse the aisles and see if there were any other suitable options.  Maybe it was the aggressive labeling of "NEW PRODUCT" that encouraged me to pick up Cetaphil's DERMACONTROL Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30 or the promise of clear, acne-free skin - but whatever it was, I bought it and I ended up loving it!
I've been using this product every single morning for two weeks now and I have nothing negative to say about it.  I have not a single blemish on my face and my skin feels smooth and well hydrated.  Granted I only use it for an hour each day when I walk my dogs, but I do have sensitive skin, so if there was anything wrong with the formula my skin would tell me - even in the short time wearing it.
The consistency is just how I like it, not too thick and not too runny.  See swatches below:
It dries quickly and is non-greasy, and the finish is semi-matte.  Also, I found it to be quite easy to blend into my skin while leaving no white overcast; so it can be used under makeup as well.  See product blended into my leg below:
Product Description: New! Cetaphil® DERMACONTROL™ Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30 New lightweight moisturizer with SPF for acne-prone skin. Hydrate, protect and control shine with this 3-in-1 moisturizer. Cetaphil® DERMACONTROL™ Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30 is specifically formulated for acne-prone skin. Fortified with advanced zinc, ceramide and oleosome technologies, this moisturizer with SPF is clinically proven to manage oily skin. It provides broad spectrum sun protection and controls shine – without over-drying skin. Developed and tested by dermatologists, this gentle facial moisturizer is part of a daily skin care regimen designed specifically for oily and acne-prone skin. When used after cleansing with Cetaphil® DERMACONTROL™ Oil Control Foam Wash, it absorbs quickly to restore your skin’s natural balance and provide a non-greasy, matte finish. Clinical testing has shown this regimen may be used to complement prescription acne treatments by helping soothe acne treatment effects, like dryness or irritation. Cetaphil DERMACONTROL Oil Control Moisturizer SPF 30 - $16.99 (4 fl. oz)

FEATURE: How To Read Your SPF Label
BFF Beauty put together a few easy-to-follow charts & guides that will help you better understand your sunscreen this summer
Sunscreen labels are getting a makeover this summer!  New FDA labeling requirements force many brands to reprint their labels.  But what does it all mean?  To better understand your new sunscreen label, take a look at the following pictures:
WHAT EXACTLY ARE UVA & UVB RAYS? UVA rays can penetrate deeply into your skin and suppress your immune system. This increases the risk of wrinkling and age spots. UVB rays can burn your skin. Too much exposure to both UVA and UVB rays raises your risk of skin tumors, including a form of cancer called squamous cell carcinoma. See diagram below:
WHAT DOES THE TERM 'BROAD SPECTRUM' MEAN? There are two types of UV light that can harm your skin — UVA and UVB. A broad-spectrum, or full-spectrum, sunscreen is designed to protect you from both.
The best sunscreen offers protection from all UV light. See chart below for FDA approved 'Active Sunscreen Ingredients' and their UV light protection:
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN PHYSICAL & CHEMICAL SUNSCREEN? There are two general types of sunscreens, physical and chemical ones. Physical sunscreens use physical UV filters, while chemical sunscreens use chemical UV filters.  Nowadays there are also sunscreens that contain both chemical and physical UV filters to make the best of both worlds. See chart below for basic differences between Physical & Chemical sunscreens:

REVIEW: VMV Hypoallergenics Re-everything Eye Serum
Kristin reviews the amazing VMV Hypoallergenics Re-everything Eye Serum
VMV Hypoallergenics is a company devoted to products for sensitive skin. You can shop their website by concern as well as read tons of informative articles all about taking care of your skin at their "Skintelligencenter". They also come out with a great newsletter/magazine called "INSKIN" which you can download every season. It's a high quality magazine, and I learned so much about their products which I can't wait to order next! They recommend trying all their products on a patch of skin for a day or so to see how you react. You can even send in patch test results and they will give you a customized list of products best for you! Simply GO HERE.
About VMV Hypoallergenics from their website:
ABOUT VMV HYPOALLERGENICS™
"VMV HYPOALLERGENICS™ is the only brand to validate its hypoallergenicity: our VH-Rating System (an original VMV skinnovation) is based on objective, independent references for allergens: the North American Contact Dermatitis Group + European Surveillance System on Contact Allergies.
VMV is included as a safer product alternative in CAMP, the Contact Allergen Management Program of the American Contact Dermatitis Society.
Our claims are backed by randomized, double-blind, evidence-based clinical studies, many of which have been published in peer-reviewed medical journals (dozens clinical studies in the likes of Journal of Drugs and Dermatology, Dermatitis) and awarded at international dermatology symposia like the World Congress of Dermatology. Our studies are so good that we do clinical trials for some of the largest pharmaceutical, cosmetic and laser companies.
In addition to proven efficacy, our products are as skin safe as you’ll ever see: Validated Hypoallergenic VH -76 (sans all 76 common allergens), 100% All-Types-Of-Fragrance-Free,100% Phthalate, Dye, Paraben + Preservative-Free, and Non-Comedogenic.*
Created in 1979 (and still formulated + tested) by a widely-published, renowned dermatologist-dermatopathologist, we understand both the skin’s surface + its microscopic structure.
Each individual raw material, ingredient, brush—every little thing that goes into or touches a product, and the product itself—is patch tested for skin safety. And that’s just the beginning! What follows is a dizzying barrage of clinical tests, both in laboratories (in vitro) + on volunteers (in vivo), never on animals.
We’re a hypoallergenic, cosmeceutical doctor brand with oodles of products. Because for us, skin safety isn’t a nice perk: at VMV, hypoallergenicity is a lifestyle. We care for men, women and children of all ages, from head to toe + cell to surface ... which is also why so many of our customers stay with us from diapers to dermabrasion, across generations."
The VMV Hypoallergenics Re-everything Eye Serum($85) gives almost instant results even after 5 minutes of applying. Overnight, the skin under your eyes transforms! I was recently given this eye serum to try and was astonished by the results. There are also long term results with this product as well! Here is a little bit about the ingredients in Re-everything Eye Serum from the website:
"A gentle dose of unbuffered glycolic acid provides mild microdermabrasion appropriate for the thin-skinned area surrounding the eyes. Kinetin growth factor promotes cell rejuvenation, causing skin cells to act younger. Proven to stimulate fibroblasts to produce more collagen + elastin. Kinetin is also a potent antioxidant. Revitalize with two more antioxidants - green tea + rice phytic acid (also an exfoliant)."
Lightening of dark circles and sun spots were the first two things I noticed after a week of using this products. After 2 weeks my eye skin is smoother and less puffy overall but still enjoys the instant results of the serum when I'm dehydrated or very tired. Your skin can feel a little dry after it sets so I applied the Re-everything Face-Hand-Body Lotion which is also safe for around the eyes. The eye serum and the Re-everything Face-Hand-Body Lotion work perfectly together! See my results below! Re-everything Eye Serum can also be used on other ares where you have lines. I like to use it on my forehead as well. I recommend the Re-everything Eye Serum and Face-Hand-Body lotion for women AND men of all ages!

REVIEW: Dr. Dennis Gross Active Vitamin D Serum-Oil
Guest writer and Beauty BFF, Carly, reviews a skincare treatment packed with vitamin D and antioxidants, that will give you luminous & radiant skin this summer
Dr. Dennis Gross Active Vitamin D Serum-Oil ($65.00 1 fl oz)is a serum oil created to provide sufficient levels of vitamin D through topical application.
Guest Writer - Beauty BFF, Carly
I LOVE this product. I have been using it at night after I cleanse my face. Typically when I wake up in the morning my skin is a blotchy mess--very red and uneven. Since I have been using this product I wake up with my skin looking smooth and clear and much more even than I have seen it in ages. I love that it absorbs quickly, and doesn't sit on top of my skin. Besides living in the desert climate in Utah, I spend a ton of time outside--biking and walking Julian and Georgia around my neighborhood, and taking Julian to the pool and the zoo and parks--I nearly spend the entire day, every day outside, and my skin pays for it. I feel like this product gives the moisture and youth back to my skin that seeps out all day spent outside. I think it has made significant difference in my skin, and I have only been using it for a week now.
PRODUCT DESCRIPTION What Is It? This serum-oil is a concentrated skincare treatment. Packed with Vitamin D and other reparative antioxidants and botanicals, it helps improve the appearance of skin elasticity, hydration and minimizes the appearance of pores—all immediately visible upon application. Who Is It For? Anyone who wants to reduce the appearance of fine lines & wrinkles, enhance radiance & luminosity, alleviate dry, flaky skin and help reverse the visible effects of past damage through the nourishing (healing) benefits of Vitamin D. Great for all skin types & ages, including combination/oily. Why Is It Different? While traditional Vitamin D oils need sun exposure to be made active, this formula, containing the ingredient Ergocalciferol, is already active and does not require sunlight. This unique serum-oil emulsion is infused with the multiple anti-aging ingredients & benefits of a serum within the hydrating delivery system of an oil. How Do I Use It? Shake well. Apply 2-3 drops, more if needed. Gently massage into face, neck, & décolleté. For AM &/or PM use after the Alpha Beta® Peel. Follow with moisturizer &/or makeup application, if desired. Benefits:
Replenishes skin’s hydration levels & boosts elasticity
Smoothes appearance of fine lines & wrinkles
Enhances radiance & luminosity
Corrects the appearance of hyper pigmentation
Dr. Dennis Gross Active Vitamin D Serum-Oil (1 fl. Oz.) is available at: dgskincare.com ($65) Sephora ($65) Skinstore.com ($65 plus 20% OFF using Code: BEACH20)

REVIEW: Rouge Bunny Rouge Glassy Gloss NEW SHADE "Rhubarb Custard"
Jenni reviews the brand new Glassy Gloss shade "Rhubarb Custard," launched as a part of Rouge Bunny Rouge's summer 2012 "Mistral" Look.
Kristin and Jenni continue their summer 2012 pursuit of achieving Rouge Bunny Rouge's "Mistral" look.  Both BFF Beauty girls believe that the Mistral look, with neutral and balanced colors that compliment all skin tones, captures the essence of summer perfectly by creating a natural, fresh and sun-kissed glow! The second product from Mistral, that Jenni is reviewing today, is the Sweet Excesses Glassy Gloss NEW SHADE Rhubard Custard, along with Rouge Bunny Rouge's Shimmering Luxe Balm in Sip of Pink, and the Longlasting Lip Pencil in Vasco. To see our first Mistral product review of Cheeks in Bloom Blush Wand "Titian" - link HERE. The Rouge Bunny Rouge MISTRAL Look... j
Sweet Excesses Glassy Gloss "Rhubarb Custard" color description... j
Along with the Mistral look launch and the product launch of 5 new Glass Gloss shades, Rouge Bunny Rouge has updated their Glassy Gloss formula to a more advanced texture... j
Rhubarb Custard is a gorgeous shade on its own, but here is how it is used in the Mistral look: j
Lips
Step ONE) If your lips need an extra portion of moisture begin with our structured, full-bodied and creamy DAZZLING SIP Shimmering Luxe Balm 'Sip of Pink' which melts onto your lips. Step TWO) You wish for a my-lips-but-better colour? Try our semi sheer coverage milky nude rosewood SWEET EXCESSES Glassy Gloss 'Rhubarb Custard' for an ultra glossy but natural result on your lips. Apply with the included applicator. Small tricks:
If you naturally have a darker lip colour, first use FINE-SPUN LIGHT to lighten up and get a more fresh and brilliant colour.
Use our Long-lasting Lip Pencil to contour your lips and prevent "bleeding". .
...I completed all the listed steps, including the 'Small Tricks.' Staring with the Fine-spun Light to even out my lip color, and the Longlasting Lip Pencil "Vasco" to contour my upper lip line.  Then I applied a base-coat with Shimmering Luxe Balm "Sip of Pink" and topped it all off with my new favorite lip accessory Glassy Gloss "Rhubarb Custard." Here are the products I used... j
Check out our review of 'Sip of Pink' HERE
And here are the results... j
Me wearing Rhubarb Custard in the sun
Me wearing Rhubarb Custard in the shade
First let me just say that I don't know how Rouge Bunny Rouge continues to not only impress, but keeps me on my toes with excitement.  I feel like just when I've found my all-time favorite RBR product, they manage to top it, and I fall in love all over again.  As I've already discussed in previous Glassy Gloss reviews such as Fleur Parfait (link HERE,) I think the Glassy Gloss line is top-notch, probably the best gloss I own (and yes that includes Chanels Levres Scintillantes Glossimer.)  Best in both the colors and formula.  Well the 'updated formula' is just as fantastic, and I honestly can't think of anything negative to report on it.  The consistency is definitely less 'sticky' than the previous formula, but I didn't think it was ever 'too sticky' to begin with.  What I love about this new formula is the light & fluffy creaminess - it glides on so smoothly and really does coat your lips with a wet-effect look while providing long-lasting luscious color!  So you can get a better idea of the different Glassy Gloss formulas (original vs. updated,) I've included side-by-side comparison swatches of both... Rhubarb Custard (on the LEFT) has the updated formula Fleur Parfait (on the RIGHT) has the original formula.
Rouge Bunny Rouge gets an A+++ and a cherry (or should I say rhubarb) on top, for their updated formula and new Glassy Gloss shade - Rhubarb Custard! Available at Zuneta and Beauty Habit ($29 US) Stay tuned for our upcoming reviews on more of the products used in the Mistral look... ...Coming up next, As If It Were Summer Still...Bronzing Glow Powder in "At Goldcombe Bay"...

REVIEW: Melvita Extra-Rich Hand Cream
BFF Beauty Girl, Jenni, along with Beauty BFF guest writer, Carly, review a rich and nourishing hand cream from the 100% natural & organic line MELVITA
A couple weeks ago BFF Beauty was generously given several products from MELVITA, a wonderful organic line based in Southern France.  All of MELVITA’s products use “the finest ingredients that are organically and responsibly sourced, with respect of nature being their priority.”  And since MELVITA is one of the pioneer all-natural cosmetic companies, “creating innovative products at the forefront of organic formulation,” we thought our Beauty BFF, Carly who is an environment-conscious and all-natural beauty consumer, would be the perfect guest writer to test out some MELVITA products with us. After all, who better to give an honest assessment of organic products than a new mommy (such as Carly) who consistently has to be aware of ingredients and not purchase products with chemicals that may possibly harm her child?
BFF Beauty Guest Writer - Carly
This is our first MELVITA product review, so before we continue here is a little background on the company MELVITA...
The Company’s founder, Bernard Chevilliat a Beekeeper and Biologist, is very passionate and involved with all the inner-workings of the product line and in particular, staying 100% true to organic, natural and being eco-friendly all the way from development to delivery of each and every product.   MELVITA’s philosophy involves taking a “pro-active approach that encompasses sustainable development and the preservation of beauty, biodiversity and environmental balance.” Where did the passion for environmental balance come from? Well it’s a “sweet” little story involving Bees…
HONEY & LIFE
Did you know? MELVITA means Honey (MEL) and Life (VITA) in Latin MELVITA started from a passion for bees and their invaluable role as sentinels of nature. Bees are facing a major environmental crisis with colonies declining year on year due the increasing usage of insecticides, of uncontrolled urbanisation or pollution. Today, MELVITA does its share by:
Supporting organic agriculture throughout the world by formulating beauty products with organic ingredients.  Raising awareness of the bee crisis.  Using organic Honey, organic Royal Jelly, Pollen and Propolis not only for their cosmetic properties but also to promote this agriculture.
Here is what the Founder, Bernard, has to say about the origins of the brand MELVITA…
"As a biologist and beekeeper I was fascinated by traditional wisdom and knowledge about nature and beauty. I founded MELVITA in 1983, with reference to life and honey, that extraordinary product of flowers that sits at the confluence between the plant and the animal worlds. Faced with the combined assaults of industrial chemistry and parasites, the world of bees was already, in my eyes, a reminder of the wider world’s increasing fragility, because a world without bees would be a world without flowers, fruit, beauty… This was why, from the outset, I wanted to place “nature at heart” in all that we do: in our approach to beauty and skincare and of our ecological and humanistic concerns."
"MELVITA is a pioneer in organic beauty and has grown to become one of France’s leading brands of natural and organic cosmetics. Resolutely organic. Because we are convinced that an organic commitment is one of the keys to the future of the planet. In addition to effectiveness and pleasure of use, I hope you will find here the authenticity, the ethical approach and, above all, the passion that makes us so different today."
**Side Note ** When doing a little research on MELVITA, BFF Beauty Girls were thrilled to see the following statement on their Company website:
We actively protest against the pointlessness and cruelty of tests on animals.
We can’t tell you how it warms our heart to know that absolutely no animals were harmed or inhumanely tested on during any process of MELVITA’s product development. They get an A+++++ and three stars for this alone!!! OK now moving on to our first MELVITA product review, the Extra-rich Hand Cream
Carly Says: My hands look ten years older than I am. They honestly do. And, it's awful, and embarrassing. I slather lotions on all-day-long, every-single-day, without exception. The first skincare products I seem to be attracted to are hand creams. I am always in the market for a good one and especially an all-natural & organic hand cream. I have tons of hand creams--by the kitchen sink, at my desk, in the bathroom, in every bag I own, in the car...and so I feel like I am a pretty good judge of the different qualities each hand cream seems to offer. I am almost always disappointed by hand creams because they either don't absorb well enough, and leave my hands a greasy mess, or they absorb really quickly and don't seem to have made any difference in how dry and stressed the skin on my hands is. It is a rarity that I find a good hand cream that is rich, and moisturizing, and immediately makes a difference, AND doesn't leave a greasy mess behind.   MELVITA's Extra-rich hand cream does both! It truly does. It absorbs at lightning bolt speed, no greasy mess, and my hands immediately feel better, and look better. Plus, another big complaint I typically have of hand cream, is that they often absorb, and then ten minutes later I feel like I need to re-apply. But, not the case with the MELVITA hand cream. I even find that it holds its moisture after I wash my hands (which I do a gazillion times a day). It is seriously, possibly some of the BEST hand cream I have come across--ever. Plus, super bonus is that it is organic, and formulated with three honeys, and royal jelly (which is what my grandma always swore by), and shea and cocoa butters. The only thing I did not like about this product is the scent/fragrance. However, the fragrance would not stop me from purchasing more of this cream! Jenni says: This is a perfect example of how different and unique we all are when it comes to our beauty product preferences, because although Carly didn’t care much for the scent of MELVITA's Extra-rich Hand Cream – this smell was what I LOVED most! Hahaha…anyways, I thought the scent was sweet like candy. Although it's a strong scent at first, which may turn some people off, it does soften and smells more like a refreshingly light floral mix of lavender and rose. I also agree with Carly that the formula of the cream is excellent as it does absorb into the skin properly while leaving just the right amount of moisture. Additionally, I thought the cream felt rich, nourishing and luxurious to touch. Which surprised me because usually all-natural products lack a certain decadence in their consistency – not the case at all with MELVITA. The price may seem high for a hand cream ($25) but the bottle in enormous (5.07 oz.) and will last a very long time. I will repurchase MELVITA extra-rich hand cream for sure! A few swatches of the Extra-rich Hand Cream...
