The Met. Police Cheney Triumph 650 ISDT Challenge
75 posts
I've always wanted one of those legendary Cheney off roaders with a big old fashioned Triumph engine. However, it had to be built by Eric Cheney, the man him self. If his son Simon had been involved - so much the better. It also had to be a Cheney built for action, not for show. Here's the tale of the adventure in restoring a Cheney I stumbled upon in Germany . It's a Cheney with a history. It will take some time to research and tell, but hopefully you can help me by posting advice - or even getting some advice from this blog if you are doing something similar.

PJD 17L
I have just found and posted a new video at speedtracktales of the ISDT 1975 that originates from Zundapp. I note it features PJD 17 L in one of the clips

Hi just thought I would pop by to say hi and remind you if you had not checked speedtracktales lately if not I've addded some stuff on the Met Police team at the ISDT 1973. I have also just been 'given' a copy of the 1973 programme to be scanned and posted soon
Thanks. Great Site. Love to see that 1973 programme as I had a bid at the one on ebay but it just got too expensive. Sven

Do you know where the Viking Buraffaldi sunglasses can be bought?
You can still buy Baruffaldi sunglasses but only the modern variants.
I got the ones on my blog in a flea market in NY.

I just got back from the US and could not resist snapping up these superb Viking Baruffaldi goggles. Italian made - all the US riders seemed to wear them on their  650 Triumphs - including Bud Ekins and Steve Mcqueen and even Dennis Glover on his Triumph ISDT Cheney. This photo of him wearing his clear sunglass lens  - from the 1975 ISDT I believe.

PJD18L Cheney ISDT 650 Triumph at start, middle and finish of the 75 mile Arbuthnot Trial 2012 for its shakedown run. It ran faultlessly. Bit heavy on the special sections though

Thank you Adrian Walls at speedtracktales

The post below alerted me to a video on his site of the 1976 Austrian ISDT where you can see video footage of my bike PJD18L in the Parc Ferme. It looks rather clean so it must have been one of the first days. Here a picture of the other two Met Police Cheneys. This must be the last time a Triumph competed at a world level in off road competition.

Great feature on old ISDT Bike
I have taken over the repair and upgrade of an old isdt site current url speedtracktales.wordpress.com originally the work of an old times who had to give ti up. I was keen to find your blog and have featured some of the information since it has a general interest on the ISDT particularly by British entrants. I thought I would tell you I have just uncovered a video on youtube for the Austrian ISDT in 1976 and on it you can see PJD 19L which must be very similar to your own bike. you can find the video here http://speedtracktales.wordpress.com/isdt-tube/

Progress Report! Here it is after 18 months work. Started 3rd kick after having been in pieces for 25 years. Now it just a matter of sorting out all the little problems....like why does the engine cut out when you sit down on the seat!

This is Stewart of the Stewart's Motorcycle Emporium just round the corner from Kempton Park in Middlesex. He's got a loads of 70's lathes and wardrobe of brown engineers workshop coats. He has just turned me some special mounts for the exhaust and my rear light as well as some lovely frame bump stops  You could not find a more knowledgeable and charming gentleman - he doesn't rip you off either. Which is nice.

The Silencer - is it not an upside down Triumph Trials Cub silencer? Great project. to me these are great bikes (beautiful looking too) and are just begging to be brought back into action and put those R1200GS to shame!
Hi Philsil. Thanks for your message. Turns out it is a BSA 441 Victor exhaust which has just gone back into a limited run production. Just arrived. Just need the down pipe to match.
I'm hoping to have it done by the isle of man TT in june to put all those Italians on their R1200GS's to shame
 Cheers
 Sven
