There was a chill in the air, but that was to be expected with the seaside breeze. Mariah admittedly found herself admiring the sound of the crashing waves and the sight of the moonlit sky from the manor’s cliffside balcony. Mika had insisted on staying at this manor after everything that took place at the circus over a month ago, and kindly, he had insisted on having Earl Phantomhive, along with the Montclairs, join him. And how could she say no to her darling son? Especially after the sorrows he had gone through then.
Especially when there were things she could possibly gain from it herself, what with Ciel’s butler accompanying him everywhere, as he had promised? It was a little past the witching hour. She had long since put her own young master to bed, and now she had some downtime to herself to do as she pleased and this time, it was eyeing the night sky with subtle admiration. She would think back to the events and remember it all with fascination. She remembered the performance, the encounters, the investigation. The slaughter at the end. It was delicious to watch the pitiful meet their demise. And to be with what she deemed her children and her fellow dearest by her side made it all the more special.
“I see you are taking in the view,” his voice broke through the silence, standing behind her. In time with the crashing of the waves, the red-haired woman turned, taking him in. His pale skin glistened in the moonlight in such a gorgeous way, it was hard to believe he was real.
“Lovely, isn’t it? The way the stars shine in the sky?” Mariah returned, her palms finding their way to the balcony railing as she stood by it, still facing him.
“I do agree. However, I feel as if I have the better view,” Sebastian commented, taking a step forward as he looked her over.
“Ah, ever so quick with that silver tongue of yours, aren’t you, Michaelis?” Mariah quipped, a sly smirk tugging at her features.
“Only whenever the time calls for it,” was all he said, as he stood before her, a gloved hand reaching to gently hold her chin and raise her gaze to properly meet his.
Moments like these felt so rare, a single time where neither of them were surrounded by lords, earls, or company. It was bliss, a moment for the two of them to speak freely. Her hand ghosted the one at the bottom of her chin, looking at him with a flirtatious glint in her eyes. She looked away before withdrawing from his touch.
“Now now, do not think it will be so easy to fall into my good graces. You have some making up to do,” she teased, looking back at him over her shoulder, that sly smirk not leaving her features.
“But of course. What have I foolishly done this time?” he asked, his hand going over his chest as he looked at her with a much kinder expression than what he usually offered to his master.
In all truth—Mariah hardly cared for the thing that happened in the circus, but goodness gracious, did she adore taunting him.
“Last I recall, a month ago you laid with another that wasn’t me… and my, did you leave her titillated with bliss,” she commented, a small giggle passing her flushed lips.
“Ah, that,” Sebastian commented with. He had remembered it. It surely wasn’t anything beyond investigation. But he should have noticed she would make note of the sounds Beast had made in that tent that night. Mariah always noticed every detail.
“I can assure you, darling, it was nothing more than business upon my young master’s request,” Sebastian stated as he got close to her once more, the moon shining upon the two in a seductive manner. The sound of waves still hitting the cliff was hardly noticeable to the two now. “But rest assured, you were who I thought of all the way through, and I intend to make it up to you, any way need be,” he continued, a smug smirk written on his features as he brushed her long locks from her back and onto her shoulder, letting his other hand place itself onto her waist.
“Good… for you have a lot of making up to do,” she flirted, looking over her shoulder to stare upon him once more through her lashes. His lips found their way onto her shoulder, to which she returned the affections by letting her hand cup his cheek. Their silhouettes on the floor intertwined as she turned to face him.
To her, he was art. Something to behold. Something she didn’t mind sharing from time to time. After all, if she was a human girl, she would be tempted by a devil like him too. His hands pulled her close, having her flushed to his body.
“You have your own making up to do as well, my lady,” Sebastian said, looking upon her and watching as her brows furrowed.
“Whatever could you mean, Sebastian?” she queried, hand pressed to his chest as he kept her in place.
“Forgive my heart, but I grow envious that your master’s father has you in his sights more than me,” Sebastian mused, hands moving and gripping onto her hips through the fabric of her dress in the subtlest manner. Ah, but of course—how could she forget the lingering eyes that were on her whenever she worked in the Windsor estate? She looked down to his chest before glancing back up to his eyes once more.
“Surely you aren’t threatened by him, my heart,” she taunted once more, getting closer to his face with eyes coyly blinking at him as if to egg him on further.
“On the contrary, I don’t mind a little competition, even if the competition is a dolt,” Sebastian mused. “Just goes to show that I have something valuable.”
There was a moment of silence between the two of them as they stood there, looking at every detail on the other’s face.
“Well then, if so, I’ll be sure to make it up to you, Michaelis,” her lips moving past his head and nipping his ear in a taunting manner. “In every which way,” she whispered before pulling away from his hold. “I shall be going to my quarters to prepare my… ‘planning’ for the next day,” before beginning to make her way off the balcony, glancing back once more to Sebastian.
He watched her. How her hips swayed when she walked in such an unfair manner. He knew her game, but goodness, was it not a fun one she played with him.
Only a fool wouldn’t follow a woman that tantalizing.
And a gentleman doesn’t kiss and tell, but my, was she ravishing that night.

A/N: hi hello ! This is my first time sharing a story I wrote about an OC I have and I hope you enjoy it! I’m sorry if it’s not any good or anything worth sharing! But I want to get comfortable with having my work out there! I hope you enjoy this little fanfic I wrote about my OC and Sebastian Michaelis!
Story info: For reference they’ve been in this relationship limbo for centuries and every-time they come close to officially labeling themselves something gets in the way or their contracts are completed (I’m sorry if that’s not how it works a girl is trying haha) but even despite this they enjoy the cat and mouse chase none the less.
Hope you enjoy!

It was a beautiful evening, nothing less than expected from a gala hosted by an Earl. The ballroom exuded a romantic atmosphere, bathed in the soft warmth of candlelight from the candelabras and the grand chandelier. The string quartet’s graceful music added a delicate charm, a thoughtful touch by the Earl himself.
Settings like this were ones Mariah had learned to quietly appreciate, even if she was only meant to be a wallflower, awaiting the summons of her masters. She stood still, intrigued by the rituals of high society playing out before her.
This life was not unfamiliar. Master Trevor, as head of the military, frequently brought her to such events. Her role was to ensure he looked his best, had the correct information at hand, and by his insistence, was accompanied by someone he trusted. For now, she stood to the side, people-watching and awaiting a signal from him or the young master Mika.
It was a life she knew intimately.
Across the ballroom, Master Trevor’s gaze settled on her. He strode over, a flute of champagne in hand. Mariah gave a slight, respectful bow as he approached.
“I hope you’re enjoying yourself this evening, Master,” she said softly.
Trevor took a sip of his drink before gently taking her gloved hand in his. “I am having a splendid time,” he replied, “though I do wish you had worn the dress I recommended, Mariah.”
“Sir, as I explained earlier; it would be inappropriate for a servant to dress like those she is meant to care for at someone else’s gala,” she replied calmly, her tone composed but firm.
Trevor let out a low chuckle. “I’ll keep that in mind when we host the next event, then.”
He handed his empty glass to a passing butler without looking, then turned back to Mariah with the same charming smile. “Join me for a dance?”
His voice was calm, yet undeniably commanding.
Mariah hesitated only a moment before giving a graceful smile. “As you wish, Master.”
With that, he led her onto the dance floor. In a sea of elegant guests, they became just another pair waltzing to the music—his hands guiding hers and resting at her waist, leading her with effortless poise. The amount of times she had to go over this poise on his dance lessons was countless, she was certain he was better off a wallflower half the time. “Your dancing has improved, my lord,” Mariah commented as they danced. “Of course it has… I have simply an enchanting dance instructor to impress,” Trevor commented with a flirtatious smirk.
Mariah simply gave a fake smile and dismissed his comment. His flirty banter wasn’t particularly out of the ordinary either when it came to him and her conversations. She simply came to ignore his remarks. She was only here to protect Master Mika and the family’s reputation—nothing more nor anything less. As the music progressed, so did the footwork. Eventually the classic waltz turned into a graceful Snowball Waltz. Begrudgingly, Trevor moved on to another maiden who seemingly was excitedly waiting for Trevor to waltz with.
Mariah was about to make her way off the dance floor when she heard an oh-so-familiar voice. “Pardon me madam, but I was hoping you may grace me with a dance?” Mariah’s wine red eyes found their way to a familiar pale face with a hand extended awaiting her acceptance. Mariah simply let out a soft chuckle before accepting. “I thought you would never ask, Sebastian.” Each of them gave a brief curtsy before beginning a movement of their own. As if they were in sync, a couple in a harmony of their own.
They were elegant and lithe in their movement, like this was a dance they have done many a times before. They have done this before… for centuries. “Do not think you’re so easily forgiven, however,” Mariah mused as they waltzed in time with the music. Sebastian blinked for a moment, the faintest sign of confusion etched into his features. “My, whatever do you mean, my lady?” His hand on her waist steady as he led her across the floor.
“It took you so long to say anything this time, Michaelis, let alone trying to find me,” Mariah explained as she followed the dance movements gracefully, spinning as he guided her. “I was afraid you were losing interest,” Mariah added, her tone having the smallest lilt of teasing to it.
How many centuries have they been doing this courtship? Six? Seven? Oh dear, it seems Mariah lost count. However, that didn’t matter to her as much, for here they were doing it again and again.
Sebastian gave a small polite closed-mouth smile as he looked endearingly at his dance partner. “Nonsense, darling, for to lose something as valuable as you would be the most foolish thing a man can do.”
“Careful now, Sebastian, you fall into my good graces again.”
“To be in your grace by any means would be a gift in itself, Mariah.”
For a moment there was a serene look of amusement etched on their features. A knowing look that both became fond of from each other. As they danced along, with a brief glance Mariah looked past Sebastian, her eyes flickering a look of amusement.
“Has something caught your eye, darling?” Sebastian asked, curious to what took her stare away from him. “Oh, nothing, my dear… though it seems like there are eyes on you,” Mariah subtly said as they turned in a waltz circle. As their positioning changed, Sebastian understood what she was talking about.
Despite being with a current dance partner, Master Trevor’s eyes seemed to be glaring daggers in the demon’s direction, envious of Sebastian’s position.
“It appears that we do have prying eyes on us…” Sebastian commented, a hint of playfulness in his tone.
It was then when she felt his hand on her waist pull her more intimately into him, soon adjusting from her waist to the small of her back, causing her hand on his shoulder to adjust to rest upon his shoulder blade. Mariah and Sebastian’s faces mere inches away from each other. “Shall we give them a show to behold?” he offered as they continued their waltz.
And in that moment, it truly felt like they were the only people in the room. Their movement was fluid and concise, as if they were two professional dancers. The two danced around like they have for centuries, romantically teetering the line of flirtation and seduction. And hell knows how the two demons reveled in the feeling. These were the moments that truly reminded her how she felt about the butler before her. The knowing looks, the banter, the touches in places where only his hands have been. Sebastian was the only person to ever have piqued Mariah’s interest in such a way that had her coming back to him, and he felt the same way.
As the music came to a lull, the two began slowing their pace, staying in each other’s embrace for a moment longer, eyes lingering onto the other’s as if they were sharing a million words with a simple look. It was only when the clearing of Master Trevor’s throat was heard, the two were brought back to reality.
“I didn’t know the help of the Phantomhives was allowed to mingle at parties,” Trevor commented, his arms crossed as he stared evilly at Sebastian.
The two pulled apart, her hand lingering in his for merely a second more. “My apologies, Master Trevor… however, my Lord gave me liberty to ensure guests were enjoying themselves at the gala… If I didn’t follow through with my order, then what kind of butler would I be?” Sebastian explained, his usual gentlemanly tone in place. Mariah knew better, he wasn’t apologetic… he never was. It was something she was rather fond of.
As Trevor opened his mouth to speak, Mariah curtsied, bowing for her master before continuing. “Please forgive my mistake, Master Trevor. I should have left the dance floor once the Snowball Waltz began… I hope I can make up for my transgression,” her tone was sweet and adoring. Sebastian looked at her from the corner of his eye, watching as Trevor lapped up her apology like a starved mutt.
Trevor’s gaze softened as he looked to his maid. “That is fine… ensure it doesn’t happen again, Mariah…” he paused, looking back to Sebastian, eyes showing a hint of the green monster people knew well. “We shall see you and Lord Phantomhive next week for our meeting?” Trevor pressed on. Sebastian looked down to the man before saying with his usual professional look, “But of course. My master and I look forward to your arrival.” His eyes flickering back over to Mariah with a mischievous glint in them.
Trevor looked Sebastian over one more time before giving orders. “Very well… come now, Mariah, fetch Mika. We must be heading out now.”
“Very well, Master,” Mariah spoke before following Trevor’s footsteps. This wasn’t without looking back to Sebastian one last time, sending a smirk in his direction with a seductive glance. Sebastian placed a hand over his heart and merely bowed, eventually losing each other in the sea of people.
Every time it was the same song and dance, yet here she was… enamored by it every time. For he and her were always meant to do this. And they wouldn’t have it any other way.
