what's so great about the mummy 1999?
are you ready for this?
it is the most wonderfully made, historically inaccurate, giddily fun, perfectly paced, goofy horror movie romance novel bullshit bonanza that has ever blessed the silver screen.
i mean it is just so beautifully full of every genre without being overwhelming.we’ve got: comedy, action, suspense, horror, romance, adventure, ancient aesthetics, and it’s a period piece. all perfectly balanced and blended into one movie.
and the characters are so LIT
we got our main babe, evelyn “motherfucking” carnahan, a super-klutz librarian, total history nerd, and certified badass/damsel in distress. she raises the dead on accident, because she cannot resist books, and has the guts to put that motherfucker back where he came from and literally saves the world.evie’s greatest hits:
“what is a place like me, doing in a girl like this?!”
*after totally destroying the library* “i’ve just made a bit of a mess in the library.”
“no harm ever came from reading a book.”
evelyn: *upon opening the tomb* “i’ve dreamt about this since i was a little girl.”rick: “you dream about dead guys?”
“oops.”
then we’ve got rick “brendan fraser” o’connell, your not-so-typical battle hardened gun slinger with a heart of gold. he seems filthy, rude, and a complete scoundrel at first, but then he turns into a literal puppy, with massive heart eyes, that worships the ground evie walks on.rick’s greatest hits:
*screams at mummy*
*screams at sand*
*screams at things that are illogical to scream at*
*screams*
next is our Comedic Relief Character™, jonathan carnahan, who also rises above his trope. he’s there for the laugh sure, but is never useless. he actively helps to move the plot along and isn’t just there. he also is the farthest thing from brainless and annoying.jonathan’s greatest hits:
evelyn: “have you no respect for the dead?”jonathan: “of course i do, but sometimes i’d rather like to join them.” same.
oh and that time he was like “IMHOTEP” and saved his own ass like that was so smooth, y’all know what i’m talking about right??
then there is ardeth BAE. he is the audience rolling his eyes because *sighs* white people. he’s tired of these motherfucking mummies in this motherfucking desert. literally prettier than everyone.(he has a much bigger role in the mummy returns, but is still so fab here)
and of course THE MUMMY. imhotep. actual emo. literally carved some poetry into the back of his sarcophagus when he was buried alive with flesh eating bugs, because he is that Extra™. just wants to bring his girlfriend back to life so he can make out with her without it being treason.
and all the side characters are also gr8.
now i wanna take a moment to talk about the romance. because it is so BEAUTIFUL. like usually in action movies it’s macho man undermines girl and they bone. not here. no time for that shit.
rick and evie have such a great relationship based on mutual respect and affection. they both cater to each other’s strengths and cover each other’s weaknesses. they are the literally definition of: “those two. in a fight, they’re lethal. around each other, they melt”
what else, i could literally talk about this movie all day.
the special effects have held up pretty well.the music score is GORGEOUS.the costumes are amazing.the makeup, especially for anck su namun, OH WOW.the george of the jungle era brendan fraser sign me the fuck up.rachel weisz.
so many good things.
it’s just great.
#i secretly rate every action movie from 0 to the mummy
it’s a beautiful mess of a movie that can be enjoyed by people of all ages and transcends time and posterity as the alpha mummy movie, and to those who disagree i beseech you:

Why the MCU narrative tells us that Loki is a villain, while Loki’s depiction tells us something entirely different.
So… I’ve seen this dissonance in the MCU right from the first Thor movie. The narrative of the movies, in general, especially through the other characters’ behaviour towards Loki, is always trying to tell us that Loki is not to be trusted, that he’s up to no good, that he’s almost always lying.
The other characters don’t trust him right from the very start, and that does not change through the movies (except for when it was convenient for Thor to trust Loki in TDW during the battle of Svartalfheim).
So, if we only look at Loki from the perspective of the general MCU narrative, he looks like a really bad egg, because no one (especially the hero coded characters) trusts him and he’s seen as the harbinger of bad things.
BUT, if we look at Loki from the perspective of how Tom plays him, if we study his micro-expressions and his nuanced body language, we see an entirely different picture. We see Loki’s pain, his rage, his love, his mental instability even, and we also see his reluctance for violence (as opposed to Thor’s love for it).
I have often wondered about this. The MCU wanted to portray Loki as the former–the ne’er do good brother of Thor, evil and always fucking shit up for the worse, making Thor’s life difficult. In short, he was supposed to be a simple, two-dimensional villain.
However, Tom, through his acting choices, gave us very different results than what the MCU was aiming at. His acting choices added layers upon layers to the character, making him one of the most interesting characters in the MCU.
I remember that in the scene when Thor and Loki fighting in the Observatory in Thor-I, Loki was supposed to act more cruel and evil, often laughing maniacally. That was how the script went. However, we got this instead:
(Source: Gyfcat)
Tom added the pain, the tears and the mental breakdown to it. It felt natural, and it made Loki more real and relatable than a maniacally laughing psychopath.
THIS is Tom’s Loki, and he shines through even when Loki is given nothing to say in the script. He did it brilliantly in all the movies, including Ragnarok, even though the narrative therein was constantly berating him and putting him down. Even when the moves tell the audience that Loki is unnecessarily violent (kills for fun), we don’t actually see it happening. The movies tell us that he always lies, but we see him serving harsh truths. We are told (through Thor) that Loki always betrays him, but if we try to back up that claim, we don’t find that to be the truth. There’s a world of difference in how we see Loki act vs how the MCU narrative suggests that he acts.
Therefore, there is always a tug of war happening between Tom’s portrayal and the MCU’s treatment of Loki. And I think therein lies the root cause of so much fandom drama surrounding Loki. Fans get divided over what the MCU narrative tells them vs what Tom’s portrayal tells them. And the staunch Loki fans always choose Tom’s portrayal over whatever the MCU is trying to portray about Loki.
And I think this is a testament to Tom’s brilliant acting and his fidelity to the character he created (yes, his Loki is not the Loki of comics) and nurtured for a decade. No matter what the MCU does to Loki, Tom tries to keep him consistent (as much as he can). Tom has been constantly fighting an uphill battle to keep Loki real and in-character.

Hey everyone! Gonna give this Inktober another crack! I took the prompt ‘Poisonous’ from the official Inktober 2018 prompt list. And yes, this year will mostly be TMNT 'themed’ XD Thought I would start with a challenge as my initial idea was a lot more simple. I took a character that I have NEVER drawn before and never actually considered drawing before now. This took a little reference to complete since I haven’t ever drawn Karai in any way shape or form. So, here’s Day 1! Enjoy everyone!
