one of the greats

i will never be big and godly,

never behold my glory like those before me,

the ribbons in my hair are childlike prayer, but nevertheless i still wear them there.

i crave to be big, larger than life, but here i sit in my solitude.

yet i have no voice like marilyn,

hardly a talent as sylvia,

oh they were queens of their time

kings, in their prime.

i’ll never be big like elvis,

never stand before a roaring crowd, screaming my name twice as loud as i’ve ever heard it.

for the vibrant hues will never cure my 60s blues.

i’ll set myself a part, play a working part.

one day i’ll hear the roar, see them all.

i will become one of the greats.
