In SFH fandom, we have often asked question about this topic; why is Seo Moon Jo a Dentist ? Why teeth ?

This is just my guess, but I think it was intentionally done to pay tribute to the story High Window and to the author Raymond Chandler. Please bear with me …..

From what I’ve seen, Director Lee Chang Hee and Screenwriter Jung Yi Do, both are very intentional in everything they do in storytelling. In the original webtoon, there is no mention of Dentistry and Moon Jo isn’t really there. Yeongsam or 203 is more …. A mix of Yoo Ki Hyuk and Seo Moon Jo( more Ki Hyuk if you ask me) . Seo Moon Jo is a character that was introduced by Screenwriter and was developed by the director for the series. Hence the webtoon and series have lots of similarities, and yet lots of differences. So I wouldn’t be too surprised if they made Seo Moon Jo a Dentist, to pay tribute or to convey a message.

The High Window is a murder mystery that revolves around a missing antique gold coin called The Brasser Dabloon and Dentist and Dentistry techniques to make things play a BIG role in the story. I am so tempted to put some excerpts but that will give away major spoilers about High Window. The fact that not only Moon Jo’s a Dentist but he also makes jewelry through dentistry techniques…. I think that was included as an ode to Chandler’s High Window and also as a vessel to deliver macabre horror in SFH.

Maybe Director and/or screenwriter are big fan of Chandler and they paid tribute to the author by mentioning it at the rooftop scene and through Moon Jo’s profession and passion.

High window is an absolute amazing story and Raymond Chandler is every bit of masterful crime thriller author. I can see why it’s Jung Woo’s favorite

I wanna talk a little bit about Yoo Ki Hyuk

We only saw the beginning and the ending of Moon Jo and Ki Hyuk’s relationship. We don’t really know what went down between them but there are some markers I wanna talk about

I was reading about some incidents today and that got me thinking. It got me thinking about Ki Hyuk’s behavior

Moon Jo and Ki Hyuk were living in the same house, they were next door neighbors. Moon Jo called him Jagi, so it’s safe to assume that they were reasonably close to each other. Or at least Moon Jo considered him close, even if somewhat close

So at the beginning, Ki Hyuk had his own style and everything. But gradually, we see that Ki Hyuk’s mannerism changes a lot. He copied everything about Moon Jo, his hairstyle, his gaze, his way of talking, his mannerism, his cloths….. everything. One hypothesis in the fandom is, it’s fanboy behavior. But what if it’s not ?

If someone close to you starts to copy everything about you, they change their appearance to mimic you, they copy your mannerism, your clothing style, your hairstyle…. Everything ……and they do it 24/7….

Then that isn’t fan behavior

That isn’t flattery

That isn’t cosplay

That’s jealousy

That person, is trying to replace you. That person wants to have, what you have. Hence they’re preparing themselves as your replacement.

What if Ki Hyuk was preparing to replace Moon Jo ?

What if Moon Jo knew that Ki Hyuk was planning to replace him (aka kill him) so he killed Ki Hyuk before that ?

And Ki Hyuk had his own potentials, but instead of flourishing in his own potentials and evolving, Ki Hyuk decided to be devoured by insecurities and jealousy. He became someone else’s copy. A mockery. Not only that, he started to behave like garden variety killers, like other Edenites. Hence, to Moon Jo, he became a failure. A flop

In episode 8, in pub scene Moon Jo tells Jung Woo “when the person closest to you, don’t know how you feel, you know that feeling right ?” What if Moon Jo wasn’t just talking to Jung Woo, but he was talking about himself as well ? What if, “the closest to you” person Moon Jo was talking about…. Was Ki Hyuk ? To some extent, Moon Jo did consider Ki Hyuk as close but the person closest to him decided to mock him and replace him. So the person closest to Moon Jo never understood how he felt. Maybe in that scene, he was self projecting on Jung Woo ? Yea it applied to JW as well

I wish to have a prequel where we can see MJ and KH’s dynamic more

Parallel characters between Strangers From Hell and Brad Stroker’s Dracula. Now of course, there are some differences, given these 2 stories are set in different circumstances. But based on base storyline of both, these are more …. Clear parallels, at least from my POV ☺️☺️☺️☺️😌😌😌

You worship someone who you consider superior to yourself. It can be love, sure, but it’s distant, it’s not intimate. You also fear someone you worship.

I think Moon Jo loves Jung Woo BECAUSE he sees himself in Jung Woo. Well, that’s one of the many reasons. They are each other’s equal and that’s how Moon Jo sees Jung Woo. It’s more intimate

And it goes without saying that, this puts Jung Woo’s and Moon Jo’s love for Raymond Chandler in a new light

In Quantum mechanics, there is a concept called Quantum entanglement. In simplest terms, Quantum entanglement is when two or more particles become linked and connected in a way, where their states are directly correlated. And in this case, distance, time, etc doesn’t matter

In this case, 2 or more particles (electrons, photons etc) are created together in a way where their properties are interconnected

If we want to or try to measure one particle’s state, then it will instantly reveal the state of the other, even if they’re light-years apart. And as proven by Quantum Mechanics, this connection persists, regardless of how far the particles are separated, creating a mysterious, faster-than-light communication amongst the connected particles

We, all human beings, are made with particles, more specifically, electrons. So by logic, if you feel connection with someone, romantically, friendship wise, or in any other way…. That ain’t just emotion. That’s just physics

We’re not being unreasonable or unrealistic if we feel that deep connection with someone (doesn’t have to be romantic all the time) but we can’t quite explain. Our building materials were literally created that way

Psychological Thriller and Quantum Physics

Yea, it’s a weird title for a blog and yes, this might be a bit odd. But it’s late night and you know this is the time for the “thoughts”. I thought of this while talking to an author friend of mine. She’s an excellent Psychological Thriller Author and she gave me lots of foods for thought. And I study math, physics and computers. So i couldn’t help but notice the similarities. After all, both human mind and quantum physics are part of nature and nature always has patterns (I mean, look at our veins and leaves, our eyes and tree trunks, our brains and walnuts….. it’s a giant list)

So, I decided to write down my thoughts in words

I think, laws of quantum physics and premises of psychological thrillers are quite similar.

Classical physics says that matter can only exist at one state and at one location at a time. Either a matter exists OR it doesn’t. Either it is solid OR liquid OR gas. Either it is at a certain location OR another location. It’s always EITHER/OR

And us human beings also like to believe this when it comes to our own psyche. Society believes people are EITHER good OR bad. EITHER right OR wrong. If someone does 1 thing wrong, society crucifies them. Even victims need to be perfect. Everything is 0 or 1. Life runs in binary

As oppose to Quantum physics, that says a matter can exist in multiple opposing state at the same time. It can be liquid AND solid AND gas. It can exist in several different dimensions and locations at the same time.

And in reality, no matter whatever we like to pretend, human psyche also works this way. A person can be thing 1 AND thing 2 at the same time. Human beings aren’t black or white, gray area exists where human minds can be black AND white. A person can be happy AND sad. In love with someone AND annoyed with them. Motivated AND frustrated. Living (externally) AND dying (internally).

Which is precisely the premise of many psychological thrillers. Psycho thrillers make us question everything, forces us to acknowledge that scenario 1 AND scenario 2 can happen simultaneously. A person can be thing 1 AND thing 2 at the same time. In reality, life isn’t always OR, often times it’s AND

And obviously….. if I’m talking about psychological thriller, I will inevitably bring Strangers From Hell (it has become habit at this point, can’t help it 😪😪😪). In Seo Moon Jo and Yoon Jung Woo both, we notice this AND theory as well. Many people mistake Moon Jo as a psychopath while many argue (including Lee Chang Hee, director of SFH) that he has high cognitive empathy. Reality is, Seo Moon Jo is capable of both. State 1 AND State 2

I read somewhere, people who are capable of great kindness and empathy are also capable of great cruelty. In my opinion, Moon Jo and Jung Woo both are good examples of this. They both are capable of high empathy AND they both are capable of shutting down that side as well. Both state exist at the same time. Like the famous cat experiment in Quantum Physics. When the cat is in the box, it’s dead AND alive. Unless you open it, both can be the case. Same goes for emotions, compassion and lack thereof

Schrödinger’s Empathy: exists and doesn’t exist at the same time

Human beings are, in fact, walking parallels of paradoxes.

And the psychothrillers that can showcase this, are the true masterpieces. My favorite is, of course SFH. Moon Jo at the end of series, when he laughs and says “you’re the best masterpiece I’ve ever created”, he’s dying and living at the same time.

We like to pretend and believe things in the manner of classical physics whereas reality and complexity of human thought process and existence follow quantum physics

I don’t have enough literary prowess to explain this properly yet 😅😅😅, but I hope, my late night insomnia laced ramblings made sense, even a little bit
