[Moving the curtains back a bit more, he leaned in to look at the book she was reading. It was odd, yes, but a part of him was convinced that she was doing this on purpose. After all…]

“My my, Natalia, I didn’t know you’ve grown interest in warfare!” [Jade chuckled, verbally poking at her and the book she had in hand.] “Were you planning to assault me when I finally came back home?”

[After a few seconds, he stopped and the smile disappeared from his face. Instead, he frowned and sat down in front of her.] “Natalia, please look at me and listen.”

Stubbornly, Natalia turned towards the window instead. If her intent wasn’t clear before, now was is unmistakable: Jade was being ignored. Shut out in the cold. She doesn’t even say anything when Jade teases her about her choice in book

Her eyes were bright, though.Unshed tears. Even for all her stubbornness, Natalia was still a little girl, and she had missed her father. But that feeling was mixed up with anger and hurt, and those feelings had all crystalized into something painfully unmanagable.

(Jade) "...Natalia?" [It felt unusually silent around his home. A small sigh escaped him and he frowned. The colonel felt awful for not having seen the young princess in what felt like forever. She probably hated him at this point, and he wouldn't blame her for it.]

Natalia perked up from her book when she heard the familiar voice, but didn’t move from her comfortable window seat. She pulled her knees up to her chest and made sure that the curtains were drawn- covering her little sanctuary. Jade could come looking for her if he wanted to see her so badly after all this time.

[Silence answered him, and he made it VERY CLEAR to the servants that she was supposed to stay home and do her lessons. That didn’t seem to be the case. Or perhaps she had been hiding all this time? Maybe after all of his coming and goings were considered some sort of game to her? That didn’t matter now. Jade just wanted to see her again.]

“Natalia, I’m home now. I just got back from Kimlasca.” [Jade started searching through the house.] “Are you here?”

[He eventually came to a room where there was what appeared to be a small silhouette, showing a little girl with a book in her hands. Slowly, he walked into the room and drew the curtain back a bit so he could peek into her reading time.]

“…Hey.” [Jade simply said.]

The young princess barely acknowledged Jade, only looking up crossly when he pulled the curtains back, before going back to her book. Her eyes scanned the same page over and over again, though none of the information entered her head. After a few moments, Natalia very deliberately turned the page.

In times past, she had always come running to Jade when he returned- even when he’d only been gone for a few hours- with open arms and happy shouts. But now he’d been gone for weeks, with no explanation, and to Kimlasca of all places! Natalia had done so well to stop missing him every single day, had done her best to squash down the deep, dark feelings of loneliness and abandonment, and she knew if she looked at him they would all come back.
