Knuxouge and Shadouge Theories for the SCU Part 1

I thought I would continue my theorising of the Rouge/Knuckles/Shadow love triangle and how it could be set up in the SCU. I plan to write two separate posts for how I believe they'll set up the Knuxouge ship and also the Shadouge ship, but in this post, I'm focusing on the love triangle itself. Whatever your thoughts on either ship, I will ask that you keep your thoughts as respectful as possible and be willing to agree to disagree with others.

References to the love triangle in other Sonic media:

While you could debate whether this line from the Sonic 06 Official Game Guide is still considered canon or not (especially since the ages of characters are no longer considered canon) for fans it's confirmation that the love triangle is canon. It's certainly confirmed that Rouge's romantic feelings for both Knuckles and Shadow are canon. Whether Knuckles and/or Shadow return her feelings though is up for debate and differ depending on which Sonic universe they are in. This reference below is from the Shipping wiki of which the link is provided above:

The IDW writers and SEGA company certainly have teased the Rouge/Knuckles/Shadow love-triangle (or "love-square" if you count Rouge's obsession with the Master Emerald). It's certainly left anonymous as whom "the one [she] loves" is (though I'm sure we can all take our own guesses). I found this picture on Pinterest and claim no ownership of it:

Why I think Rouge is attracted to both Knuckles and Shadow:

Rouge is certainly known for her flirtatious personality, yet it's very clear that she has a thing for both Knuckles and Shadow. If I were to say her attraction to them is based on a shallow physical attraction, then I would a say that she likes Knuckles because he's basically "a hunk" with his 1000% muscle and pure strength. While Shadow is dark and mysterious with an angsty "bad boy" vibe to him. It's pretty clear that Rouge is attracted to strong macho men with stoic personalities.

Though I honestly believe that Rouge's attraction to both Shadow and Knuckles goes far deeper than mere physical attraction. I believe her attraction to Shadow is based on their mutual understanding of each other and acceptance of who the other is. In the SCU I can certainly see them diving deeper into Rouge's backstory and showing how she relates to Shadow and his personal struggles due to her own hard life. Maybe she herself was used as a tool for others selfish means and/or was a prisoner in some way.

As for Rouge's attraction to Knuckles it may be a (sort of) opposites-attract situation with a bit of belligerent sexual tension until they realise that they have more in common than they think. I believe Rouge is drawn to Knuckles for his courage and noble character. Perhaps she relates to him as a warrior and survivor. Even if they differ in their moral alignments, they basically will do what they believe is right. Even if they bicker and butt heads at times, they also make a good team when they make an effort to work together.

Like both, she too may have experienced a loss in her life and may empathise with their hardships as a result.

Why Rouge could consider either a romantic partner:

I imagine SCU Rouge considers SCU Shadow as potential boyfriend due them being kindred spirits and because he accepts her as she is. He appeals to wild side of herself who doesn't mind breaking rules and getting their hands dirty. She knows they make a great team and respect each other.

Rouge also feels drawn to Knuckles's noble character and his protective nature. Being with SCU Knuckles and experiencing joys of friendship and family makes SCU Rouge wonder if she might want more than her life of crime and perhaps would like some stability in her life someday (though perhaps not right away). She considers SCU Knuckles as a potential boyfriend because he makes her want to be a better person and she also enjoys working with him as a team. Though their relationship has challenging moments, Rouge is honestly not afraid of challenges and could believe that a relationship Knuckles may be worth the effort.

Love triangle set-up options for the SCU:

I could see a scene like this (see 2:48 to 3:42) playing out between either Rouge and Knuckles or Rouge and Shadow with her trying to use her charm and cleverness to seduce either one of them into teaming up with her on a mission. Maybe she's rejected at first in a rather loud manner that Puss shows here (see 3:30 to 3:43), but she wins them over eventually with appealing to their own personal desires.

I could see Knuckles response as "You stole...THE MASTER EMERALD!", while Shadow's response would be: "You work...FOR G.U.N." :

I actually have another Tumblr post in developmental with theories about a possible Knuckles and Shadow TV show spin-off or movie (something Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves have expressed interest in). I'll go into more detail when I publish the post, but I definitely could see Rouge playing a role in the show/movie alongside the two of them. I definitely could see them as a Two Guys and a Girl style trio, examples shown with Bucky, Sam and Sharon (though without her secretly being a secret full-on villain part) from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier:

Another good option is Chel, Tulio and Miguel from The Road to El Dorado (though with Shadow and Knuckles more as rivals than buddies):

It could be set up with the trio simply working together platonically and professionally, but I believe it's possible Rouge later develops a mutual and more romantic spark with one of them. Maybe one sees her purely as a friend and/or professional partner, while the other could come to see her as more than that.

Interestingly, if both Knuckles and Shadow developed a romantic interest in Rouge, maybe I could see them coming up with a deal of sorts. While neither of them is against the idea of fighting the other and certainly enjoy the opportunity to one-up in their rival, they agree that fighting over Rouge is not an option. Knuckles says it is "Dishonourable and disrespectful to the opposite sex." (I have a few theories on his tribe's custom for choosing a mate of which I'll discuss later in his post) while Shadow simply says that Rouge is "Not a prize to be won." of which Knuckles replies "For once, More Impressive Hedgehog, we are in agreement."

They both agree that if Rouge wishes to be with either one of them, it should be her decision to decide. They also agree to a truce over Rouge, saying whomever she chooses they will respect her decision and try their best to be happy for the other (even if they agree they don't have to like each other).

I imagine one or both hiding their feelings for Rouge at first. Partly because of their general stoic personalities and also because they worry that Rouge could use their feelings for her against them in one of her schemes. Let's just say it takes a while for one and/or both of them to trust Rouge with their feelings for her.

How they set-up the love triangle and/or potential canon relationship:

In terms of setting up the love-triangle I could see it being played out in these few ways:

Their usual dynamic of Rouge flirting with both of them and she keeps them guessing of which one she likes without any serious relationship happening

Maybe she has a fling one of them but later realises the other one is the one for her.

One of them she starts a romantic relationship with while the other she keeps platonic/professional with the other (apart from her general flirtatious comments).

I love sonamy (it's both my sonic and my amy otps) but I see other fellow sonamy fans often stretch how sonic reacts to amy but this- right here. I will always agree and say "that is a swoon" So happy to see his girly, and it's adorable. Even in a platonic lense, it's adorable.

Oh yes, definitely! It will give Amy the character development and drive she desperately needs. 👐🫶

In my thoughts (inspired a little by you @redlikerosesandflowers), I believe that Amy was a friendly, kind but lonely young hedgehog girl (Classic Amy form as a child) from Little Planet who was considered weird by her peers because of her gift to see visions of the future and because they found her overly enthusiatic and optimistic personality to be childish and off-putting. She met and befriended Metal Sonic, feeling they were kindred spirits because they both considered weird.

Sadly, Metal Sonic eventually revealed his true colours and kidnapped Amy and stole her away to the futiure. His duplicates destroyed the landscape and imprisoned the inhabitants of Little Planet. Amy's family were either killed or imprisoned. She never saw them again after that day.

Amy spent most of her life as Dr Robotnik's (or possibly what appears to be Robotnik) and/or Agent Stone's prisoner. Metal Sonic coldly ignored her pleas for help, turning her friendship into hatred for the monster she saw he was.

I'm imagine that Amy either managed to escape herself or she was rescued by unknown characters who make up the Resistance (unless she starts the Resistance herself). She's been on the run from Metal Sonic ever since.

She trained hard to become the capable fighting teen she is. Her Piko Piko hammer was either made by her or for her, or she it was already made and it bonded with her via chaos magic.

Overall her main goal is to stop Metal Sonic and his creator/s and save the future from its Dystopian fate. Through her gift for visions and/or reading fortune cards (I discourage this in real life 🫤) Amy learnt that the true Sonic from the present was to key to stopping Metal Sonic and saving the world. Therefore Amy made it her mission to find Sonic and to help him complete his mission to save the world.

Nonetheless she blames herself for her home being destroyed as she trusted Metal Sonic, therefore her drive to protect others and save the future is her trying to make up for her mistake. She wants to be a hero like Sonic, even if she feels like a fraud. 😔 Sonic shows her how much of hero she truly is and that she can't let her one mistake define that.

Maybe movie 4 we will also finally get an Amy backstory

Nicknames for Amy in the SCU

I thought of a list of nicknames that I imagine Amy being called in the SCU. I'd love to hear your thoughts on them.

Various:

Rosy the Rascal - Amy's vigilante name that she's called on wanted posters.

Sonic:

Girl hedgehog - What he calls her when they first meet and before they become friends.

Missy - When he's annoyed at her.

Lady Thor the Hedgehog - In reference to Amy's Piko Piko hammer and powerhouse strength.

Pretzel Lady Junior - Sonic calls Amy this as she proves to be as flexible as Maddie when doing yoga, martial arts, gymnastics/acrobatics and dancing. He also calls her this because both women are very similar in their personalities.

Ames - We can't not include Sonic's affectionate nickname for Amy. 😉😁🥰

Sweet Amy - Sonic's very private affectionate nickname for Amy. 🥰🥺

It might be a bit of a stretch, but if Parmount and the SCU writers do officially make Sonic and Amy girlfriend and boyfriend (if SEGA will allow it in this universe) I could see them calling each other "babe" to mirror Tom and Maddie's relationship. It may be awkward when it's first said, but overtime it could become natural for them.

That or they have their own personal nicknames for each other.

Knuckles:

Pink Hedgehog and maybe Girl Hedgehog too

Honourable Lady Hedgehog Warrior

Sonic's Mate or Hedgehog's Mate - Mostly said to tease Sonic but also to encourage him to start a relationship with Amy.

Tails:

Sonic's girlfriend - To tease Sonic and encourage a relationship between him and Amy.

Maddie:

Honey/"Hon" and/or Sweetie - Maddie's affectionate term of endearment for Amy, much like how Tom calls Sonic "buddy" and "bud".

Girlfriend/"Girl" - her affectionate name for Amy when they show great teamwork or when she agrees with her.

Rachel:

Girlfriend/"Girl" - Much like Maddie.

Sister - Her sassy name for Amy (and maybe Rouge when she appears).

Tom:

Sonic's Maddie - Something that he calls Amy when he's in private with Maddie. Both because of how similar she is to Maddie, but more so because he can tell that Sonic has found his "special friend" in Amy, just like he did himself with Maddie.

Dr Robotnik (if he's still alive and/or we meet a different version of him):

Sonic's Little Girlfriend - said in taunting manner.

You Little Pink Pest - His insulting nickname for Amy.

Agent Stone

Sister - Stone's semi-friendly nickname for her.

Rouge (if she's ever introduced in the SCU):

Kid/Kiddo, Little Girl, Sister - Names used to taunt Amy

Pink - Her friendly nickname for Amy.

I honestly like this idea. I hope to see him acting as a caretaker in the SCU. It would be cute to see.

I want to see more of Shadow being a sort of medical caretaker.

I mean, despite all his cool chaos powers and being the Ultimate Lifeform, wasn't that one of the biggest reasons he was created? To cure Maria? But even though he couldn't cure her illness, he still seemed to have training on how to help someone who's sick or hurt. Exhibit A:

This is the most we've ever seen of Shadow truly taking care of Maria in reference to her illness. Still, you can see how attentive he was here. Even though they were standing a few feet apart, as soon as she started losing consciousness, he picked up on it and ran to catch her.

When she apologized and insisted that she'd just "pushed it a little," he gently scolded her by reminding her that her condition was only being kept in remission due to the low gravity on the ARK. Clearly, he was very knowledgeable on her illness and what she could and couldn't do, and he was always ready to take care of her if her condition suddenly dropped, or on her bad days (according to dialogue bits from the actual SXSG game).

And since Maria's been gone through the entire main timeline of the franchise, it seems we get so caught up in all of Shadow's coolness and powerful abilities and whatnot that we forget he's still trained— at least to some extent— in the medical and caretaking area.

That's where I'm glad we have something of an Exhibit B: the end of Sonic Prime.

I loved EVERYTHING about this whole group of scenes, but ESPECIALLY getting to see Shadow being so gentle and caring towards Sonic of all people. But to stay focused on the point of this post— even though Sonic's situation was more, shall we say, unique than Maria's, his health was still rapidly declining and he needed help for basically everything. Sure, they had a goal in mind, and all Shadow needed to do was take him to the Green Hill gateway. But knowing how violent Shadow can be (especially in context of the whole rest of the show), seeing the very gentle and clearly experienced way he assisted Sonic was both heartwarming and a strong reminder of his original purpose.

For one, in the above gif, the way he immediately went to support him the way one is supposed to with someone who can't really walk on their own, with no pause, like he'd done it before. And how he waited for a moment until Sonic was ready, monitoring his face, before starting to move forward. Then—

—Sonic got to a point of being unable to walk or stand at all, or even move very much. Shadow hesitated only for a split second, but he stayed relatively calm, picked him up, and kept going. Even though he didn't say much throughout all this, he was keeping a watchful eye on Sonic through this whole sequence, even before he took over the mission of bringing him home. He knew what he was doing. It wasn't extensive, sure, but knowing his past, we know this was not his first time taking care of someone who couldn't take care of themselves.

He's saved people before from explosions and fights, but this is a whole different category of "saving" people, and like I said, it's one that I want to see more of with Shadow in particular. 🥹🖤❤️

Random Rouge Thought™️ incoming…

This is how I read Rouge’s level of interactions with some of the core Sonic cast. You could read this as an informal ranking from high to low.

Shadow and Omega are her bread and butter. Her ride or dies. The people she deeply cares about and to which she is heavily bonded. I think the three of them live somewhat isolated lives but I think they’re in each other’s company often.

She’s also extremely keen on Knuckles. Beyond the Master Emerald, she’s intrigued by the co-existence of his hot-headed, fierce protectorship and his calm, gentle nature. I think Rouge is flying up to Angel Island a good amount to visit, and I imagine they have a nice friendship.

She likes to keep tabs on Sonic because of all the work he does for the world, but I don’t think she’d ever openly admit this. I also don’t think it’s a huge part of her daily life and focus, by any means. It’s something she does in passing, as keeping tabs on Sonic means keeping tabs on trouble she may want to avoid (or take advantage of) (or actually get involved in, if things look out of hand).

Rouge is chummy with Amy. Enjoys her company casually, but that’s where it ends. I don’t think they hang out often (dogooder schmoogooder business usually brings them together), but I bet Amy takes full advantage whenever that happens. Rouge finds herself occasionally surprised to enjoy it, but has almost no reason to seek it out.

She seems to have a soft spot for Tails and Cream, primarily because of their youth. Her interactions with them bring out some of the only genuinely protective behaviour we ever see from her outside of her interactions with Team Dark. She’s willing to specifically take them out of and keep them out of trouble.

Rouge has a proper amount of respect for everyone here, but again she would very rarely admit this to anyone below Team Dark. I imagine she’s willing to spend time with anyone below Knuckles in a group setting (like a party or an Intimate Get-together™️), but would only find herself actively seeking the company of Knuckles and Team Dark.
