During the course of this semester I have learned a lot learning about what aspects I want to put in my podcast and what I want to avoid in my podcast. Throughout this semester, the podcast I enjoyed the most and got more feedback then the others was “24 Hours at the Golden Apple” because it had excellent background noise that made you feel like you were there and they had a wide variety of different personalities, which made the podcast very interesting. From this I would want to include in my podcast that dining halls gives us the opportunity to eat whatever we want while including different perspectives, for example someone who watches what they eat, with excess to the dining halls, versus someone who can eat whatever they want. I would want incoming freshman to imagine in their head on what dining halls are at the University of Kentucky and how current students are handling on what they are eating, I would also want to include the background noise, just for the people listening that they are actually in the room, eating a meal before class. Many of these podcasts were very effective for me because of the information they gave me on what not and what to put in my podcast. I have also learned what I do not want to include in my podcast. I chose interesting people to give me good and informative answers, instead of broad and boring answers. In some of the podcasts, some of the interviews were very boring, making me uninterested in the podcast. From learning what I want to include and what I do not want to include, makes me confident that my podcast will be very interesting and informative for listeners.

In the article, “What We Talk About When We Talk About Hoodies” the statement that stood out to me was when it said, “The oversize hood-up hoodie is a look” and “not every black kid in a hoodie is trying to avoid a security camera.” From this article those statements tell me that just because an African American boy is wearing his hood up does not mean he is posing any danger to anyone. Trayvon Martin was an innocent kid who was just trying to get home before he was shot and killed by George Zimmerman. His death became a global statement all across the world, with athletes and Congressman putting their “hood up” to show the respect and innocence that Trayvon was before he was killed. This article concerns me because it just shows how a huge epidemic it is between blacks and whites, making the world we live in now not as safe as it was. With everyone looking over their shoulder and not trying to be someones next “mistake” between themselves and a gun.

My evaluator’s for my podcast idea all said they would invest in my idea because they want to know ways to take care of themselves by eating healthier. One said that “this is a problem everyone struggles with because people get so caught up in their education and social life that they forget to take care of themselves.” Another mentioned that they would invest in my idea because it can impact their life while living at the University of Kentucky. I want to think more in depth on putting myself in people’s shoes that have gained weight from unhealthy eating or are limited on what they eat due to food allergies. My goal for this podcast is to help people to be aware of what they are eating while also giving them tips on how to live a healthier and better life while they are in college. I don’t want them to feel that I am judging them for gaining weight or not knowing what to do or where to go if they have food allergies. This is suppose to be impactful for students to help them make the next four years easier. The only thing I am concerned about for my topic is not finding specific people with food allergies, but it’s a big campus I just have to know where to look and ask around if someone knows someone that has a food allergy around campus. I am looking forward to getting to know people’s opinions on the matter of eating healthy on campus and if the majority of students even pay attention to what they eat. Also having a different perspective with people with food allergies and how they deal with it day by day compared to others or do not have it.

The targeted audience I will be approaching in my podcast are students that are vegetarian or have certain food allergies. This can limit what and where students eat all around campus. This could be very challenging on where students eat on campus, causing them either to spend more money at the grocery store or causing them to eat less throughout the day. I want to narrow down on students with this limited variety of food and ask where they eat on a day to day basis since most of the dining halls around campus are very unhealthy. I also think it would be interesting to know what they eat because if you can’t have meat or glucose in your diet, then what do you eat everyday? I would also want to get the perspectives on the chefs around campus, more specifically the 90, and what they have to change or do when a student notifies on the certain foods they can’t eat and how the chefs respond to that. This will make the podcast more personal and interesting because of the different varieties of people I will be interviewing throughout the podcast.

Blog Post #5
The article that I found did a study about the social, physical, and temporal characteristics of the dining halls and how it can effect children’s eating behaviors. The social factors, more specifically sitting arrangements in schools, can affect what children eat or how much they eat depending on who they are around. If they are sitting by their friends, they feel more comfortable eating what they want and how much they want, rather than sitting in assigned seats where students are more insecure on what they are putting in their bodies. The physical environment can influence eating behaviors by the way schools set up their kitchen equipment, such as their tables, seats, or plates. Some schools also revised their menus, this improved students learning behaviors in the classroom. Making students more comfortable while they eat, giving students what they want to eat can not only give schools profit, but can also improve students academically. The temporal aspect of the study talked about the amount of time some students get in school to eat lunch. In the United States, students get approximately 13-20 minutes to eat, not giving them a lot of time for students to enjoy their food or have it digest properly before they head on to their next class. The article narrowed down these three aspects to let people know that this is a problem and if we narrow it down to at least one of these aspects, then we could improve a students eating habits for the better.

The place I have decided to do on campus was the dining halls that are located all over the University of Kentucky. I am really interested in this topic because I’m a human nutrition major and learning about all the variety of foods that our campus offers is really fascinating to me. The questions I would ask would include: 1) Why do they have more unhealthy options on campus then healthy 2) Why did they choose these types of restaurants to put on campus? 3) Does location on campus determine where students eat more or less? I personally like to go to Bowman’s Den because of all the different kinds of fast food places they have. It’s quick and easy to take back to the dorm or library, but it’s not really beneficial for my health to eat there everyday because of the lack of nutrients that my body needs. I think this topic would be very interesting for throughout the semester and I’m very eager to get started!

When I entered class today I was fully confident in myself to give a great speech while making full eye contact and trying to stay calm and not getting nervous. Once I got in front of the class I started to get very nervous, but I still remained confident and tried to keep full eye contact while still trying to get my point across. It went better then I expected because I didn’t go off topic and still remained confident in myself even though I didn’t have notecards in my hand. Not having notecards with me and still being able to say my speech well is what I am most proud of because I knew I could still give a good presentation without having that since of security with me. I think one thing I should work on the next time I give a speech is to not get so nervous before I present and to just stay calm and remember all I need to say while also taking my time because I tend to talk really fast whenever I’m nervous.

Through out high school I wrote a lot of book reports and research papers, and during those four years I wasn’t a big fan of all the writing I had do. It always felt time consuming, but I knew by doing these assignments it was improving both my vocabulary and my writing skills. When I am given an assignment I usually brainstorm everything i could write about in my paper to make it A+ material. After I brainstorm, I set up everything that I am going to talk about in each paragraph, from the introduction all the way into the conclusion. After I complete the whole paper I read over it one or two times and do a lot of editing during this process to make sure that I am completely satisfied with my paper. I have been pretty successful with this process during my high school career, but I know in college the papers are a lot more in depth. I will have to be more factual and to the point then dancing around the answer to make my paper longer. It will be a transition that I know I will be able to do and I will help me in the long run in my career.

The area of Lexington is a much faster pace with people walking and driving everywhere then in my hometown. The buildings in Lexington are a lot nicer and closer together, which is nice for walking to class. I love the brick buildings and walkways on each side of campus because it gives each wing a little personality. I chose to come to UK simply to branch out and to become more independent with myself since this is the first time living on my own. UK is a great campus for you to feel at home and comfortable with. I love how small campus feels once you get comfortable and find out where everything is. In my hometown everything is very spread out, but in Lexington the brick buildings and open restaurants are very close and convenient for you to walk anywhere. The tall maps and signs on campus are really convenient for getting to know campus or wondering where you are. Since i grew up in Kentucky, UK has been my dream school since grade school. No one in my family has ever graduated from UK and I hope to be the first to say that I have! My first impressions as a student was very overwhelming since i came up a week early for rush, but was also very beneficial because I learned my surroundings a lot faster and met so many great people to help me prepare for the upcoming school year.
