"Please write a proposal for what you intend to install in the exhibition (maximum 200 words). For this, you must provide a brief description of the work including themes and materials/processes involved. We also want you to undertake a simple risk assessment. Please indicate any risks that you think the work may present and offer ways of eradicating or reducing this risk. "
Exhibition proposal:
For my exhibition I will be showing a collection of 9 screen prints which responds to my research into German expressionism. I often work creating very realistic pieces, this outcome combines that with my abstract line drawings. I think that this is a good way to showcase the styles of which I work in to the viewers and lets them know more about my interests as an artist. I will be setting them up in rows of 3 to for a square. These will be pinned/nailed to the wall by small bulldog clips so that it doesn't ruin the pieces by putting holes through them.
Potential risks (e.g. slip hazard):
They may slip or fall down, which is very unlikely due to the light nature of the paper, but I will make sure that the pieces are securely attached to prevent this from occurring.
Exhibition dates:
Part 1 - The Body
Monday 24 th April 09.30 – 16.30 Install work (staff available to help Carl Rowe)
Tuesday 25 thApril 09.30 – 16.30 Group presentations
Thursday 27th April 09.30--‐12.30 Take show down

My exhibition piece was not finished which I had found extremely frustrated. I didn’t have enough time to achieve what I wanted to. For example, I had wanted to experiment and work into the prints more. I wanted to have an array of prints that had been worked into and layered with different elements of media and emphasis on certain areas or features. Because of this I feel like its going to be an ongoing project that I need to continue to work with until I feel content with the piece as a whole.
During my 10 presentation of my work, I got given a lot of feedback about how I should continue to explore and work into these pieces as the tutors agreed that it felt unfinished. I was given a few names or artists to look at such ah Gerhard Richter and his painting on top of photographs. This was the main piece of feedback I had received and was told that I could improve and work on this once I received my feedback.
Unfortunately I was unable to take any photos of the rest of the exhibition due to being ill, however if I manage to get hold of some I shall upload them.

I really like how the overlay of the line drawings change how the print looks. It makes it look less photographic and falls back into a more painterly drawn piece.

The acetate in preparation for screen print and the outcome of the screen print.
I was quite frustrated with how the outcomes turned out as the yellow wasn’t mixed well enough, it had too much yellow in the mixture. This gave the outcomes more of a yellow hue and made the faces look slightly sunburnt. However, because I stuck to the same mixture for all my prints it almost looks like this was intentional.

BA1B SKILLS 3 ADVANCED SCREEN-PRINT:
“There are numerous ways in which artists can work with Photoshop as a means to make transparent positives (or TPs) for screen-print. It is possible to render photographs and scans as halftone images, replicating the qualities of newspaper, billboard or poster print. With a degree of simplicity, colour images can be converted into the four process colours of cyan, magenta, yellow and black – what is often referred to as CMYK printing. Within this project, we will explore the potential for making halftones and full-colour screen-prints using the methods outlined above. We will also start to consider the potential for screen-print to become part of a multi-media installation by making small 3D printed objects.
Week 2 Tuesday 14th March – Four-colour process (or CMYK) You will be shown how to generate CMYK separations from colour digital images. These can be photographic from any source or scans of drawings, collages, paintings or objects. We will give you a demonstration of CMYK printing. We will provide you with a screen large enough to accommodate 4 x A4 separations (CMYK) and you will be assisted in exposing and developing the TPs onto the screen in preparation for week 3.
Week 3 Tuesday 21st March – printing, pop-up exhibition and discussion You’ll have enough time to complete the printing of your CMYK print. Print occupation - In the afternoon, we will find a location in St George’s where we can install a display of the work (some of which may still be work in progress of course), including the printed boxes. We will take time to consider the outcomes, directions, implications and potential of the work produced.

This workshop was by far my favourite, I found it so interesting learning about the cmyk/4 colour process. The hardest part for me was struggling to line it up and not being happy with the prints when they didn’t line up completely. This is a technique I think I will use most often as I like the fact that its a more creative way of making an almost photographic like images without the use of paint or painting realistic.

Myself and Harriet, otherwise known on social media as Harri Smithson, put up an exhibition of abstract portraiture. We both wanted to push ourselves into doing something a little out of our comfort zones, for example my comfort zone is portraiture however I wasn’t overly confident in the abstract area of painting, whereas Harriet was the opposite to me. I think it was good to challenge ourselves and we were extremely happy with the way these outcomes turned out.

For these pieces, I began by spray painting eyes on the square painting, overlaying each colour to create more or a detailed background rather than just colours. I then used oil paint to paint the face onto top of the spray painted background, I chose to use black to make the face bold and really stand out against the pastel colours, with some white lines placed in certain places to look slightly tonal.
For the other two pieces, I used spray paint in an attempt to have little splatters of colour leaving some white areas visible. Again i used black oil paint to create a bold line for the continuous line drawings of faces, this time I used a grey to add a subtle tone to them but added turpentine to it to make it a little watery to drip in some places in attempt to emphasise the expressive feel to the piece. I then felt it need a little something extra so I added some smaller line drawings in posca paint pens to add some little subtle details which are not that noticeable at first glance due to the light colours (pink, white with a few black ones) to make the viewer more drawn into the piece.
In comparison to each other, I prefer the second paintings due to the smaller finer detail included. I feel that they draw your eye in more than the spray painted eyes in the square painting as they are more visible from a distance so doesn’t make you look that deep into it. I think to improve on that one, I could possibly add a few little detailed line drawings amongst the spray painted features.

These are some line drawings that I had done during lectures, when spontaneously inspired.

I think some of these worked out well in comparison to others. For example, some of the prints, the ink was too thick so that the drawings didn’t appear when printed. Other ones, I didn’t press too hard when drawing so that it didn’t print correctly.
I think this stye of printing works best for creating texture rather than drawing for my personal style. To take them further I think I would use this technique to print texture for the background and then print using either lino/screen print the face on top of that.
