It’s been months but I’m still thinking about this tweet that said out off every character from Xianle that we meet Hua Cheng is the most representative of their love for the arts, for riches and beauty.

Like truly he in many ways comes to personify Xianle in a way, both in the high society luxurious culture that Xianle was famous for but also he’s the orphan from the four famous tales making him the representation of Xie Lians care for the common people. Like he is both the lowest of the low and someone who’s kept the Xianle ways alive.

Like all my brain is thinking of is how Xie Lian distanced himself from all that to cultivate, then to become a God, then a poor peasant and how homesick he’s been his whole life.

Only for his husband who was a poor peasant, then a solder, then a king who represents everything Xianle stood for and how their stories are going backwards and forwards and how Xianle is gone but how Hua Cheng embody all of Xianles culture from the poor to the rich ans and how he feels like home to Xie Lian now.

Ruoye: Your Highness! I'm hitting him because Wu Ming has been stupid. You have to give him a forehead kiss to remind him we still love him despite his stupidity

Meanwhile, I finished cleaning the scan of Tarot Card # 2, Binghe as the Emperor. Traditionally depicted on a throne with a mountain behind him, holding an orb and a scepter, which you will see I took some liberties with, the Emperor represents authority, control, structure, etc when upright, and tyrany, recklessness, lack of discipline, etc reversed. So this one was always gonna be Binghe.

This scan took a while to clean up, because I wanted to redo the linework in the border to make it crisper, but! This is the final version of Card #00 in the MXTX-themed major arcana I'm working on; Shen Qingqiu as The Fool. One of the challenges I've set myself with this series is to incorporate as much of the "standard" iconography as I can; the Fool is generally depicted as a young man on a mountain path, carrying only a single bag and with a small brown dog at his heels. The Fool stands for a lot of things, but the big one is "new beginnings".

This was done mostly in watercolor - I used some marker for the skin, and there's some colored pencil in the final touchups, but otherwise, this is pen-and-ink and watercolor, and I'm quite pleased with how the composition and colors came out.

So I have finished cleaning up the scan for the latest entry in the MXTX Major Arcana tarot project- Lan Wangji as the Hermit. I will be honest: this particular card was assigned at least 50% because the Hermit is traditionally depicted holding a lantern, and this is very appropriate for LWJ. But the Hermit stands for self-reflection and contemplation, as well as isolation and being cut off from society (in reverse) and honestly, I have always thought LWJ's internal journey in the time WWX was dead was one of the things most interesting about him as a character.

This is - for me - a pretty monochromatic painting; half the watercolors I used were different shades of blue, but I think it came out quite well.
