Fuori Salone 2015
I would start applying the following concept written by Gio Ponti (In Praise of Architecture), to a smaller scale: design. ‘The balance is the dynamic expression of architecture. It’s where architecture starts to talk (and then sing), it’s where it breaks the sleep of the symmetry, a large, comfortable, tolerant dimension: Art is exactitude at the limits, without tolerance and safe merges: it’s a demanding game, a successful game: the balance of the impossible becoming possible.’ And from the same book: ‘The legs of a chair, Adolf Loos was use to say, must always be “too thin”, a spire “too tall”, a bridge “too tense”: always a challenge: a success.’  After re-reading this book and listening to Giovanna (Achille’s daughter) at Fondazione Castiglioni, I refreshed my ideas about what design should be. Her devotion and enthusiasm switched on certain convictions I some times forget because of instant enchantment. We don’t have to adapt to an object, it’s the object that has to adapt to us. It’s observing the society in which we are living that design become clever and able to support and inspire people behaviors. I tried to recognize, among all the works exhibited at Salone, what is really making a difference in term of balance, dynamism, playfulness, surprise, innovation. That’s what drove me across the city with compulsive curiosity and here below a selection of designers I would recommend to follow. Among them you will find a range of midcentury design (BBPR, Gio Ponti, Alvar Aalto etc…), even a piece from the 1926 beautifully designed by Jean Michel Frank for Hermès and contemporary design: Dedar textiles, Interiors set up by Dimore Studio, Martino Gamper’s living workshop, Max Lamb’s Exercises on Seating, the Nilufar’s heritage collection. A special tribute goes to Swiss elegance: the Zurich based designer Tom Strala, the Lausanne based designer Béatrice Durandard and the cooperative effort between design school ECAL with studio Formafantasma.
