if i ever see the phrase "be gay, do crimes" ever again it will be too soon lol. a phrase that was immediately leapt upon by people who balk and start crying over the idea of people engaging in even the objectively harmless crime of piracy and whose idea of "crime" is relegated to overly romanticized fictional events. im genuinely galled at the idea of using a real-life genocide in the middle east as a backdrop/prop for a gay romance between americans. i feel genuinely insane and completely morally detached from reality lol

something very fascinating about discworld as a setting is how the books are mostly set during a period of after
the color of magic and the light fantastic are set during the waning days of barbarian thug heroes. cohen and his cohorts are either old or dead, and the incoming generation isn't finding much profit in the hero business. tax fraud is more profitable than pillaging.
the mention of horrific wizard wars that are so old that even the aftermath of them are relegated to allusions instead of explicit description.
lancre is haunted by the spectre of black aliss, who never appears on screen and has been hansel and greteled by the time of granny and nanny being the witches of authority, and even they feel like their time coming to a close.[1]
uberwald is the remnants of a fallen evil empire.
ankh-morpork had kings, then despotic tyrants, but on page is governed bureaucratically by a man who, i will always argue, was working to ultimately get rid of his own job.
we are introduced to a city watch that has been defanged and recovering from several failed revolutions.
moist von lipwig is a reformed con man being forced to repair the damage done to public institutions by other con men, but we never truly see the shell games played by moist or others.
even small gods concerns itself with the reformation of a fire and brimstone religion.
basically, if epic fantasy is a party, discworld is the story of the people who have to clean up afterwards despite not being on the guest list for the event.
-
[1] the way that shepherds crown is not only an explicit conclusion to granny weatherwax's tenure, but quietly implies nanny receding from prominence herself is an aching sadness i wish pterry had the time to explore. tiffany is the person who arrives first to an empty but clean dance club.

A part of me rrally does think that "talking just to hear yourself talk" is unhealthily normal in our society.
Like, yes, there's also the stereotype of the artist as someone who is driven to create because of their own madness and all that shit but on a fundamental level this particular criticism is saying that it's weird when artists don't do that.
i do write for attention, actually, because that's a normal reason to create art

dogs are fully capable of, and willing to, communicate the full range of their ideas. sometimes those ideas can be surprisingly incisive, or original, or even have the suggestion of a "sense of humor", but the button stuff is FULLY a scam and has been since that type of scam was invented sometime in the 1700s. bunny the dog is very smart for figuring out that pressing buttons in random patterns means she gets treats and attention. she is not communicating any deeper idea than "i like to push the button and have mom pay attention to me, this is an activity we both seem to really enjoy and i love my mom and am motivated by approval and time spent together". the fact that the dog is not being appreciated for her intelligence and kindness and love in her unwitting participation in this stupid scam shes probably kind of bored of by now (its no tennis ball thats for sure) but rather for an exploitative pseudoscience lie made up to sell books makes me remember that when the carnival witch captured the unicorn in Peter S. Beagle's The Last Unicorn, she had to cast a glamour on the unicorn to give it a false, glowing horn, because the punters who paid to gawk at the witch's collection of caged beasts couldnt actually perceive the unicorn's real one.

i hate when rich people condescend with the whole 'money can't buy happiness' argument like listen. just because buying your fourth car didn't fill the void in your deluded disconnected-from-reality life doesn't mean not having to worry about food/ bills/medicine wouldn't greatly improve the mental health of literally everyone else on the planet

“paid subscription with ads” is fucking crazy. if you pay for a service and then get served an ad on said service you should be allowed to pipe bomb its executive at no legal risk

The children's show villain is a figure who sadly is not seen outside the children's show. There are few stock characters who as succinctly declare, from sheer stage presence, "the world is unloveable and it is painful to live here; that which delights mankind is like ash on my tongue" without being too fucking whiny about it.

i know that life isn't a race and that everyone does things on their own schedule and that i shouldn't compare myself to other people who haven't lived the same life that i have and overcome the same obstacles i have. BUT

greta was time's person of the year a few years ago. she was adored by all liberal world leaders and parties. and when she learnt about people's struggle under occupation and colonialism, she stood in solidarity with them . she now stands with palestine and armenia and kashmir and every oppressed person in the world. she could have been rich as fuck by simply remaining as a climate activist. yet she chose to do the right thing. i love her for her integrity.

does anyone have that quote that goes something like 'white germans under the nazis lived just fine as long as they were loyal to the state, gave their children to the army, and paid their taxes, and in this sense many americans would be comfortable living under fascism' trying to find who said it but google is giving me jack shit
