I appreciate this photo because, well, for the first time in 15 years I smoked marijuana. I tried edibles too, which I enjoy a lot more than smoking since they don't present health risk. So one night, my lady made some cookies and I ate at least six - within 5-10 minutes - completely unaware she baked them with infused oil! Let me tell y'all -- I was so high that up was under me! Honestly, I started experiencing cannabis-induced anxiety and was so bloated that it was hard to breathe. I remember sitting on the bed debating whether or not I could make it to the bathroom - 10ft away. Then on another occasion, I ate two edible gummies. I figured 'hey, I'm a big guy, two won't hurt' - ha! Never again. Those two gummies had me stretched out on my lady's bed trying to sleep the high and anxiety away. I'll never spend my money on marijuana or be a consistent user but it's a cool experience from time to time whenever I'm not accidently over-consuming. The best thing to come of it was how it made me think about my photography. Ideas came to me much quicker and easier. The personal stories I can tell y'all about 2020 are almost endless but I'd rather keep it vague. Definitely a lot of stress, a lot of success, too. I had a lot of time during long shifts as a 'essential worker' to think about my photography. I've stored so much photographic data in my brain that I literally became a much better photographer by thought alone. Not having much time - and motivation - was a necessary circumstance. Maybe I was forced to see it that way? I'm not sure but all of that was said to say I've always admired black and white photography. It is said that you have to be first, different or great. I say if you're different then there's a strong possibility that you'll be first and/or great. With that said, many photographers are using the same formula, unwilling to disturb the calm waters of photography and models typically look to integrate themselves into this society within a society. Fans assume that as a photographers our ultimate goal is to capture their favorite celebrities - this idea can be annoying. Some of us could care less about the social status of the subjects we're photographing. Some of us just want to create art and there's no person of prominence that can influence this - I'm of that ilk. I say all this because it's been verbally presumed. The photographers that I believe are the greatest all differ in some way and greatness differs from one to another. Shooting with the 50mm made me forget how much I enjoy full length photos. Funny thing is, this was shot with a 50mm, which is best for portrait photography. On another note, it was super cold out this day. We were on the top level of a parking garage a few blocks from Fiserv Forum. Frozen fingers, teary-eyed and strong winds. I usually hate pictures when models are smiling and staring directly into the camera. They come off as being so blatantly choreographed and uncreative. There's always an exception to the rule but I will forever despise squatting and hair pulling/tugging in photos. You'll never get me to feel otherwise. I think the quarantine helped keep us stagnant or revealed the magnitude of how 'stuck' a lot of us are prior to it. I think a lot of us needed the time to do nothing as a way to self-assess and re-apply ourselves. I think a lot of us became depressed and unmotivated from losing our jobs to the possibility of losing a loved one. A lot of us dealt with the reality of losing a loved one. I think a lot of us were confused which lead to a series of misplaced thoughts and emotions. I think a lot of us questioned the hype and continued with our lives as if nothing happened. I think a lot of us tapped into survival mode and became even more creative, obsessive and relentless. I also think a lot of us are just plain ol' lazy. A lot of us keep intellectualizing why we shouldn't begin our self-appointed or divine ordered mission. This safer-at-home order has me diggin' deep into my archives, finding and post-processing gems my eyes couldn't quite process at the time the photo was captured. This was taken just two summers ago at a local laundry mat. I met a fellow photographer at this location who admired my work. We talked about partnering but honestly, I didn't think much of it. I've come across dozens of creatives and discussed collaboration in some form, but with no follow-up. About 6-7 months later, he and I were sharing a photography studio.
