Eclipse Study, 2024. Oil on illustration board. 10 x 8 in. $150 (plus shipping).
Something I learned while documenting this piece is that glossy dark paintings do not scan well, at least not in my scanner. All the ridges in the brushstrokes get highlights on them, and the darker values get messed up due to varying reflectivity and underlayers. It works much better to take a photo, although you lose a lot of detail, especially due to having to angle the piece to avoid glare.

I'm terrible at identifying cars, so if anyone wants to have a go... what is it? A Renault or something?
Update: I've been informed by an AI chatbot that it's a 1970s Honda Civic.

Reaching Aspens, 2024. Oil on illustration board. 10 x 8 in. $195 (plus shipping) I was able to get some new paintings done in January, starting with smaller studies. This is a clump of aspens on McHugh Bluff, as seen in early autumn.

Sometime last winter, for a secret potential project, I practiced painting portraits in an attempt to find a portrait style that could be completed in 30 minutes, reflect the character of the sitter, and look good, or at least interesting. These are Mira, Steph, and Olive. Generally, they are acrylic on illustration board or canvas board and 10 x 8 or 12 x 9.

Mingling in Evening Light, 2023. Oil and acrylic on wood panel. 36 x 22 in. (DM for pricing). Recently, I've been interested in the visual textures of reflected and refracted light found when observing plants close-up. I connected this interest to the Fort Calgary site by noting how the existence of both native and introduced plant species in the area hints at the human stories here. In creating this painting, I wanted to explore the tension that arises when attempting to use a map (the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers) to arrange the chaotic flora that actually grow on the riverbanks.

I managed to capture a few photos of the final painting in process, showing the first acrylic underlayers. The transparent layers in the early stages have some nice qualities, and it's a shame how little they contributed to the final image. I learned that when doing a high detail underpainting like this, I should strive to paint the correct values (or even higher contrast!) in the first pass, otherwise I will waste dozens of hours repainting in an effort to try and fix the values, but keep the shapes.

Some digital sketches I made for Mingling in Evening Light, where I started incorporating the map of the river confluence into the design.

The Flip the Script show at Fort Calgary is over! The painting I included was ambitious, and took lot of work, so I thought I'd make a few posts exploring the process of making Mingling in Evening Light. These are some of the initial sketches I made of the different flora species around the Fort Calgary area, plus some exploratory compositions.

Entangled Wildflowers is another piece I started as a study for the Fort Calgary show. Part of my process was to document the flora around the Fort Calgary Site, and it was interesting to find both indigenous and introduced species growing on the banks of the rivers there. In this case, sticky geraniums and campions.
