Sunrise on the summit trail to Mount Whitney, Sequoia National Park  (Elevation: 14,495 feet)
Hikers of all ages and from around the world come to California's Sierra Nevada mountains to experience the John Muir Trail.  Some hike sections and others hike the full length from Yosemite National Park to the top of Mt. Whitney in Sequoia National Park, 211 roadless miles away.
Yes, you can walk for more than 200 miles, through some of the most beautiful scenery in the United States, and never cross a road. We have the Wilderness Act of 1964 to thank for that.

National, state and local nonprofits are joining forces to save an artist's historical legacy inside an underfunded California state park. The hidden gem holds a significant place in national art history, women’s history and Jewish history – themes under-explored in the park system today.

It seems to me an escape from Alcatraz Island would have been possible. Granted, the currents felt very strong right next to the island when "I escaped," but thousands of swimmers escape every year for fun. The New York Times ran this story to commemorate the 50th anniversary of a famous escape:
Tale of 3 Inmates Who Vanished From Alcatraz Maintains Intrigue 50 Years Later
Many people do not realize that the storied Alcatraz Island is also part of the National Park system. A mile and one-half from the shores of San Francisco, the island features gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and 360 degree bay views.
