If you can excuse the bad rhyme, here's my 'Old Thunder' in a field of flowers. It would make him think twice before setting my blog on fire.

Thoughts on Escape from Alcatraz (1979)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tonight's movie was Escape from Alcatraz (my dumb ass kept calling it Escape from Azkaban in my head).
All in all, it's a solid prison break movie with a lot of great performances and appropriately claustrophobic atmosphere. It's very slow-paced and methodical, with a bare minimum of melodramatics, and while this has led some to dismiss it as "boring," I liked the sober presentation and admired the ingenuity of the characters.

Escape from Alcatraz (1979)
Tumblr media
From The Shawshank Redemption to The Great Escape, stories of innocent or righteous people scratching together the means to regain their freedom is both captivating and emotional. Unlike most films, Escape from Alcatraz doesn’t “cheat” by giving us a softie of a protagonist. Without a doubt, the people in this film deserve to be jailed. Ultimately, you don't care because of the ingenuity in their plan and the fact that it’s based on a real-life story. Tense all the way through and with a terrific ending, it’s one of the best prison escape films.
In early 1960, Frank Morris (Clint Eastwood) is sentenced to the maximum security prison on Alcatraz Island. Having escaped capture many times, Frank is undeterred by the exceedingly high security measures and strict warden (Patrick McGoohan) who assures him no one’s ever made it out.
Alcatraz isn’t merely a prison; it’s a hell hole. While there are some who certainly deserve everything the guards and warden throw at the inmates, such as a rapist called Wolf (Bruce M. Fischer), many of the prisoners are sympathetic; victims of an unfair system (Paul Benjamin is serving dual life sentences for killing two white men in self-defence) or clearly reformed by the time we meet them. Alcatraz doesn’t see it that way. The objective is not to rehabilitate. It’s to make lives miserable. In fact, the warden makes a point to punish those he oversees based on how he feels about them rather than the way the justice system sees them. He’s not a cartoon but his smugness means he deserves to be knocked down a peg. That’s where Morris comes in. The odds are stacked against our protagonist. It’ll take inhuman levels of ingenuity to escape from the prison. Some of his tactics are so wild, it’ll make you feel like a moron. You think the operation will be as simple as Morris, his accomplices John and Clarence Anglin (Fred Ward and Jack Thibeau) and the fourth conspirator, Charley Butts (Larry Hankin) stealing a power tool to break through the bars at night but no. They’re going to have to MAKE the tools they need - out of nothing.
The space the escapees have to maneuver in is so tight, you’re constantly wondering what will go wrong. Clever as it might be, their plan is literally put together with bits of loose paper, paint, and mud. It just barely crosses the line into doable and the tiniest detail out of place will make the whole thing fall apart. While there might not be anything that prevents them from trying again should they fail, so much effort is being put into this attempt you can’t bear the idea of it failing. You want to see the phases work just so you can see what to see what comes next.
It’s probably better that you don’t know beforehand what actually happened on the night of June 11, 1962. The FBI’s position on the events are clear and unfortunately, they don’t make for a cinematic ending. This is where the film proves to be as ingenious as its protagonist. It’s a terrific final note.
Escape from Alcatraz deftly maneuvers over the obstacles it might’ve faced to deliver wall-to-wall thrills. Against all odds, you like the characters. You like them even more when you see what kind of plan they’ve got cooked up and you can’t wait to see it executed. It's one of these stories that's so wild it HAS to be true, which makes it a real nail-biter. (March 27, 2020)

Review:
This was a rollercoaster of emotions... I was excited to play this as soon as I bought it, but then after the first couple of minutes of play I was a bit irritated/defeated because the mechanics , gameplay, and rules (in my opinion) was not clearly defined - I didn't no when to discard cards or keep them - I didn't know when to truly flip a card or go to the next. Just utter confusion at the beginning.
Truly, this is the first time I played through a game that had No Rule Booklet nor Tutorial.
Usually I am annoyed by the amount of time it takes to read through the rules before starting, but this game made me realize how integral a good set of rules/instructions are to having a fun experience.
I would say by mid game my tune changed and my mood/happiness lifted as I really started to understand the gameplay.
So, knocks against the game are it is not the easiest game to jump into if you are new to the game tyoe - BUT - Pros?
Storyline is Fantastic given the simplicity of the elements provided.
Like, the storyline is sooo good with a cool ending that almost, entirely, washes the bad taste of the beginning of the game out of your mouth.
For the price, the simplicity, and storyline... Yeah, it worth a purchase/playthrough, but it's not for a novice Escape Room Artist.

Cinema Speculation: Tarantino explores the films that made him as a young man
All good books are about something. But in most good books, the theme is not evident at first sight. There’s the obvious “something”, the story that shows, and then there’s the not-so-obvious “something”, the one that is really the soul of the writing. In this case, at first sight, you could conclude that the book is about what Tarantino thinks about American films of a certain period: the…

Cinema Speculation
“Cinema Speculation” is only the second book by Quentin Tarantino (is debut was a novelization of his film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and the first non-fiction book. Apparently, Tarantino is aiming at a writing career, after he’s finished with the movies (he’s been saying for a while, his next film would be his last).
Tumblr media
“Cinema Speculation” was just edited in 2022, and was straight away on my books waiting list to acquire. I was lucky enough to have got it as a Christmas present. Aside from the book being a true page turner, the fact that I had a bit of extra time during the holidays made me able to finish it in 3 weeks – for such a large book, I was unusually quick.
Speculation is a sort of a memoir of Tarantino's experience of the movies (and movie theaters he went to) throughout the 70s. I already knew of his reputation as a movie buff, but it’s quite different to read it. Because I’ve seen quite a few interviews of Tarantino, as well as watch him act in many movies, it’s hard not read with his voice in your head when you're going through the sentences and expressions, which are actually very characteristic of his.
Tarantino goes through a very wide array of movies, and not just the gender you’re expecting (blackspoitation, grind movies,…). He has very particular knowledge on many stories that surround movies like Escape from Alcatraz, Bullit, Rocky. I didn’t know many of these and a lot of the movies I never heard of either – it made me feel that I still have a lot to go with regards to American cinema (I thought I was completely lacking on the cinema of other countries, which I will not name here), but it also made me feel the urge to list those movies and start watching them all with the new information I just learned.
It's also very entertaining to hear about how was the experience of going to the movies in different areas of LA in the 1970s, and to learn some details of Tarantino’s own life while growing up, son of a single mother, and trying to pitch his scripts. He actually lands himself an interview with a very well known script writer, Paul Shraeder.
The whole book is a compilation of film critiques of all these movies, that Tarantino actually loves. He knows it's still his own view and you take it as you wish.  But, agree, or not, with his perspective it’s worth the hours you take to read it.
“Cinema Speculation” written by Quentin Tarantino, Orion Publishing Co, 2022 ISBN: 9781474624220
