Late to the game. Sorry not sorry. Too many ideas, not enough plots. Fewer endings. Too much coffee to silence the muses. PG-13 preferred - Tumbl with care, kids. These are all fictions. Also on AO3 as outlawserenade. Follows/likes as @outlawserenade. Buy me coffee? Ko-fi.com/outlawserenade

am I the only one who thinks that Nightwing got raped as a Not A Bad Thing? And no, don't @ me with rApE iS alWySz bAd!!!1
I get it. Been there. Done that. Stuff it, kids. 🙂
I couldn't understand the ending the first time I read it. But then again, I'm not the kind of reader that follows the *Events* when they happen crossover. So I never understood why the disconnect until I read Devin Grayson's interview a few years ago.
If I were in Devin's shoes and had had to make a rapid ending, I'd have made Tarantula's death IN a Nightwing comic and get Dick to proverbially 'man up' in the War Game crossovers. I definitely will NOT make her 'earn Batman's trust' - shit, Helena Bertinelli had to have the whole damn city destroyed in No Man's Land to get Batman to *remotely* trust her.
Why would Batman trust a random costumed chick just because she's a Latina and they were dealing with Latina gangs? Because her brother Matteo was the ADA? Batman's faculties (read: his gadgets and databases and all that jazz including Oracle) were intact and in working condition. He could've known Catalina had worked with Nightwing (the latter would have made some reports/notes of prior engagement and level of untrustworthiness) and ask Nightwing for his assessment - which I don't recall he did but CMIIW. There is no need for catalina to crossover and get to Secret Six where she was eventually killed.
So yeah, the massive plothole that is the barely(and badly)- reconstructed ending was the only thing I disliked - and since I do know of how publishers would sack random writer at random times, that was what I'd assumed happened: Devin did not get the chance to finish her storyline and somebody else picked up the shattered pieces.
anyone remember that time in nw 96 where dick's circus burned down and then his apartment and he was like homeless and then he got broken up with then raped. what was up with that

people saying that they think they can tell that something is an "AI quirk" because "real people" don't use it, because their personal experience does not encompass its usage
Hey, so I write reports for a living. I use the AP style because it is mandatory. I have been doing this job for approx. 14 years.
Guess what got integrated into my FIC writing?
Even when retyping written fics I'd wrote 20-30 years ago, I'd subconsciously use things like semicolon, em-dash, and/or and/or. Sometimes in one single verily run-on sentence (well, okay, most times).
MS word and LibreOffice both automatically changed -- to —. GenAI using the same style does not mean I have used (or would use) ai. It just means that it STOLE from me (and thousands of other articles from writers who use the same style.
"this is DEFINITELY written by AI, I can tell because it uses the writing quirks that AI uses (because it was trained on real people who write with those quirks)"
c'mon dudes we have got to do better than this

RIP Peter Morwood 💔 My condolences @dduane 💙
Peter Morwood
I am so sorry to have to tell you all about this. None of you, I suspect, will ever have any idea how sorry.
I am in utter shock and terrible pain to have to inform everyone that our friend, my dear husband and creative partner of nearly forty years, Peter Morwood, passed away suddenly early this morning after a brief illness that as late as yesterday (when his doctor saw him) had seemed to be on the mend.
I'm not in any position to say much more about this situation now, as you'll understand my current mental state is not up to the task. (I keep expecting to wake up from a bad dream, but it shows no sign of breaking.) I will let people know more about this in coming days.
There will be a postmortem shortly to determine the exact cause of his death. I'll share what details of this are appropriate as they become clear.
Meanwhile in the short term I'm very much going to need assistance with the expenses that in the days that follow will inevitably surround what's happened.
ETA: Those expenses are now handled.
And I want to thank EVERYBODY who so incredibly generously has stepped up to assist. You are all, every one of you, in my heart right now... not least due to the many, many kind things you've had to say about Peter. Current events mean I'm going to be backed up on the thank-yous for some days yet. Please bear with me.
For those who feel inclined, the Ko-Fi account here is naturally open as usual for those who might simply want to drop something into the pot tagged "GNU Peter Morwood." I'm looking into notes about his preferred charities so that I can split all such donations in those directions. (For example, P. lost a beloved cousin very young to childhood leukemia, so I'm looking around for appropriate cancer charities. ...But more of that later.)
My love will wait for me, I know, however long it takes. He's never minded waiting. (the saddest smile) My job now is to make sure he's not forgotten while I go on.
Meanwhile, can I just say to all of of you: I thank you all ahead of time for all the support and fondness for Peter that I know so many of you will express. He'd blush over it, I know. (He always did.) Please forgive me for being unable to do much in the way of answering messages, just now, in the wake of having to get to grips with this sudden and awful change in my world.
But also let me say, so urgently: Hug your loved ones now, while you can. Eventually a day will come when, expected or not, your opportunities end.
Thanks, friends.

Just a heads up, there are bots going around on AO3 accusing people of using AI. Considering the timing, this is likely AI bros' retaliation for AO3 users calling them out for scraping their work. Examples of what you might be sent:

Screenshots from here.
If you get a comment like this, just report for spam and delete.

How To Lock All of Your Fics At Once On Ao3
Someone has probably already done this but
For anyone looking to lock their works for only registered users over on Ao3 in light of the sudowrites scraping thing here is how you can lock all of your fics at once.
Log into Ao3 and go to your Profile, Works or Dashboard

At the top under you’re user name there are four buttons pick Edit Works

Second row of buttons on the right chose All and then hit Edit

Scroll down past all of your works and then keeps scrolling until you find Visibility change it to Only Show to Registered User

(If a fic is over the tag limit you have to edit those down to make edit to the work.)
Hit Update All Works at the very bottom and you are done all of you fics should now have a little blue lock next to your user name on each fic.

I've got 9, too. HMU in DM if you want it & I'll update as I send it out
With more and more Ao3 authors restricting their works to the archive (due to AI scraping), they're going to be losing guest interaction. And probably generally feeling down because. You know. AI is stealing their hard work.
So! Now is a great time to stop by your favorite authors/stories and drop them some comments! They really appreciate it!
#ao3 writer#i also have 9 invites!#My work are closed anyway#so if you want to see the continuation of it#HMU and get yourself an AO3 account!

The instant I use generative ai to write will be the instant I am fully dead and buried kthx.
a writing competition i was going to participate in again this year has announced that they now allow AI generated content to be submitted
their reasoning being that "we couldn't ban it even if we wanted to, every writer already uses it anyway"
"Every writer"?
come on

Lil ai bros 100% are the rapists and murderers and plagues of fanfic writers, and don't be surprised that you'll be the exact same pariah to non-fanfic writers as well.

as a writer AND programmer: *makes space on desk for emotional support skink next to emotional support ducky*
(gripping the skink with both hands, pale and feverish, sweating and shaking as I look at myself in the mirror) “killing a character is a valid writing choice that can be a crucial plot mechanic and lend beauty and depth to the story as a whole” (wretches up blood into the sink) “even when it’s my favorite character”

*points at @lurkinglurkerwholurks' addition.
Lock. Your. AO3 Fics.
"But I want those without an account to see!" - those without an account are ai bots THAT WILL COPY PASTE YOUR FICS and feed it to their word-hungry brain and IGNORE your hard work.
AO3 has given us their words that they will not allow their site to be scrapped. YOU - the writers - should be the next line of defense by making your work harder to grab off willy-nilly without an effort (making an account, actually select all-copy/paste/download your fics).
Don't be complacent, kids.

starting to suspect that tech bros actually just don’t know what reading is

Bye!
Here's hoping that the idea lives on in the hands of people who ENCOURAGES others to WRITE. On their own. NOT normalizing the use GenAI and/or pretend that our hatred of GenAI = ableism.
I'm glad NaNoWriMo existed, like a lot of people would probably say, it allowed me to realize that I, in fact, CAN write 50k words in 30 days. But the current people who runs (ran?) it should get their collective heads off their asses and get back to basic.
Abhorring GenAI is not ableism. If you can write, you can WRITE - even if it's gibberish to you. If you can SPEAK, you can WRITE. If you LANGUAGE, you can WRITE. Type, pencil-to-paper, speak it to a microphone - that's WRITING. Not prompting a machine going, "make me a cinderella story but with batman and robin." and do nothing else and leave chance to some zeroes and ones.
WRITING is a spread of a collection of words that were created to describe YOUR point of view to the other person. Not a fucking machine's point of view (which there is none - the damn machine writes based on previously stolen templates).
NaNoWriMo's website blatantly ignoring the human brain behind Writing and supported machine thievery is the lowest of low. And they deserved the boot.
The organisation was also widely criticised last year over a statement on the use of artificial intelligence in creative writing. After stating that it did not support or explicitly condemn any approach to writing, including the use of AI, it said that the “categorical condemnation of artificial intelligence has classist and ableist undertones”. It went on to say that “not all writers have the financial ability to hire humans to help at certain phases of their writing”, and that “not all brains have same abilities … There is a wealth of reasons why individuals can’t ‘see’ the issues in their writing without help.” Fantasy author CL Polk said at the time that “NaNo is basically asserting that disabled people don’t have what it takes to create art when they trot out the lie that scorning AI is ableist”.

Post it up, no edits! 😜
I'm proud of you!
There's always a spot about 6-7k into a chapter where I start to panic because there's still so much more to go, but I've already done so much work that it starts feeling like it takes too much of my very limited energy ugh. I love writing, but I wish I wouldn't get exhausted so fast
