The second follow-up entry to the recent ship proposal Ask, this time for OkoHoshi!

How would an Okonogi x Hoshina proposal go?

Okonogi wouldn't dare! It's all up to Hoshina.

He might get on one knee and ask her to... join him in transferring to a different division, should he happen to make Captain?? But not to flat out propose. He comes from a very traditional household, so I don't see western-styled proposals being his thing.

Speaking of tradition, he's probably been forced to attend a few family-arranged omiai here and there. As a form of malicious compliance he asks Okonogi if she wants to come along as his plus one - or maybe she could replace the other party altogether?

Okonogi scoffs and shakes her head and even laughs if she's in the mood for jokes. She never takes his words as anything more than that. Nor should she! If he wanted to be taken seriously, he'd have to actually be serious.

How terrifying.

So if Hoshina manages to propose, it's still going to be in the most vague, saying-it-without-saying-it manner he can possibly muster.

Okonogi is mildly perplexed when the Vice Captain interrupts her workday by placing a small box atop her keyboard. Rude. She's been at the computer for a few hours now and her eyes are tired, so she can't help but squint at it suspiciously. Was this some kind of prank?

A present, he assures her, even though there's no cause for it.

The so-called present turns out to be a boxwood comb, simply carved but still beautiful in detail and finishing. Konomi picks it up carefully. Curiously.

"Are you telling me to... take care of my hair?"

"Well, yeah." Soshiro gestures at her with playful exasperation. "Just look at it!"

The look Okonogi shoots him is decidedly not playful.

......

"...But I'd..." Hoshina rubs at the sweat forming on his neck, trying to wring the words out. "I'd help you take care of... I mean, I want to take care of you. All of you. Not just your hair, y'know?"

It's clear from her expression that Okonogi Konomi does not 'know'. Not quite.

Inhale. Exhale. Hoshina Soshiro steels himself.

"…And if possible, I'd like you to take care of me too."

The Vice Captain's eyes meet hers as he speaks. They're sharp and steady and piercing and it's more than she can bear. Okonogi looks away in a confused panic, back to the comb in her hands.

A comb. A comb?

Oh.

The realization hits her and Konomi thinks she might burst out laughing, but when she puts a hand to her face there are only tears.

"Wh...! Why can't you just ask me normally, Soshirooo!?"

It's all she can manage to say before crumpling entirely.

Soshiro wraps his arms around the crying woman, computer chair and all. Mouth pressed firmly to the top of her head, the question of will you marry me is muffled by soft chestnut hair.

there was a tiny OkoHoshi moment in today's chapter! and i just had a random thought because of it

hoshina just presenting okonogi with a ring, no down on one knee or anything, he just has his arm out to the side with the open ring box in his hand

"Vice Captain, behind you!" Without that warning he could have been slice in half 0.0!!!

"Okonogi dear, phase two!" It always amuses me how he manages to call her Okonogi-chan even in the heat of battle when it's such a mouthful! His tongue's running on muscle memory lol

Interestingly, couples rings are pretty common in Japan! A man will often present his partner with a ring on their birthday or anniversary - not necessarily with the promise of marriage or anything quite so heavy, but as a concrete (and sparkly) confirmation of their relationship status. A sort of sign that says "hands off, this one's taken!"

The Vice Captain tries to play it off as no big deal at first. It's just a way to keep pesky guys from bothering her. A bit of armor if you will. Not a silent declaration of wanting to keep her by his side forever and ever or anything. Definitely not.

Okonogi tries to decline at first, blushing red and full of hesitation. Something so pretty wouldn't suit her! Definitely not!

And in a completely unrelated train of thought, Hoshina wonders if No. 10 would be down to assist in a seppuku ritual.

"...But... well..."

Soshiro pauses his internal spiraling to watch Konomi take the ring from its case. She turns the delicate band over in the light of her computer monitor, blue eyes softening on closer inspection. It does match the colour of her glasses, she notes thoughtfully, so it might not... not suit her........

...!

Some days later, Okonogi's co-worker spots an unusual glimmer from the corner of their eye.

They look over to see Operations Leader Okonogi typing away as usual - only there's a silver band on her finger all of a sudden, light catching on the pristine metal with every keystroke. When did it get there? How and why? The owner of said ring hasn't mentioned it, and in the end no one asks.

No one really needs to ask, because they're all fairly sure (let's say 92% sure) that the only person close enough to give her such an item - and the only one she'd accept it from - was Vice Captain Hoshina.

i'm skimming through the manga to catch up, and i came across this page and thought of this post

there's an actual reason for why her uniform is so big! she deliberatly got a big uniform!

I’ve been studying the casual jumpsuit uniform the officers normally wear very closely for cosplay purposes, and I noticed something interesting…

In nearly all instances, everyone’s cuffs are shown to have three zig-zag seams running horizontally through them.

However!!

Okonogi is consistently depicted as having only 2 zigzags showing on her cuffs, which tells me that

OKONOGI HAS TO ROLL HER SLEEVES UNDER / HEM THEM TO FIT PROPERLY!!!

Honestly an impressive bit of detail from the animation team.

until a name is given, i'm refering to this guy as Kaiju No. 0, i don't know, it just feels apropriet to call it that

I sure did, though it was during my work day! It was quite... anxiety-inducing ^^;;;

I'm starting to wonder if there's a slight supernatural element to this Meireki kaiju that's more in line with my Edo AU than I first thought >.>

It’s attacks are so mystical, it's hard to view it as anything but demonic... or godly.

The same for Kaiju No. 8 - though I'm hesitant to make any predictions, I was rewatching the anime and noticed the ghostly figures that appear during Kafka’s initial possession. Knowing what we know now, it makes me wonder if the parasite kaiju was actually born from the will of vengeful spirits - angry warriors wanting revenge against the kaiju who killed so many of them.

For a long time the series has looked at kaiju from a purely scientific standpoint, and the origin of kaiju was theorized to be creatures exposed to fault line energy in the earth's crust... but maybe there's more to it than that? We'll have to wait and see!

i bet one of the first things people called him when they saw his kaiju form was "Oni!"

Next in my Edo period AU is Hibino Kafka!!

Or probably just 'Kafuka' in this setting, though he might take on the surname 'Hibino' as he pretends to be a warrior.

Kafuka works as an undertaker. This was considered a very unclean profession at the time, not just physically but spiritually. Butchers, tanners, and pretty much anyone who worked with animals and dead things were deemed impure. Excluded from the class system of samurai, farmers, artisans and merchants, they were wholly 'other' and often faced discrimination.

Which is to say, Kafuka's toothy smile isn't always real.

(Incidentally, my goze Konomi falls into a similarly 'othered' group as a blind performer - entertainers, beggars and prostitutes are included in this as well.)

I say Kafuka is an undertaker, but he spends more time cleaning up kaiju corpses rather than human ones. It's a job even less people want to do, which means more work and better compensation for him.

During a seemingly normal job, Kafuka has his body invaded by a larval kaiju same as in canon and transforms. He's chased from his home by fearful villagers and is then on the run. With no other ideas on where to go or what to do, he decides on heading to Izumo in search of his childhood friend Mina - hoping the priests that took her away all those years ago might know how to fix him. He doesn't know that the famed Ashiro no Mikoto he's heard songs of is the one to look for.

He poses as a common foot solider, claiming to be a farmer turned fighter while hiding his real identity. After befriending a young samurai by the name of Reno, he's accepted into the entourage of a certain blonde noblewoman as they travel west.

Kafuka asks those they meet on the way about Mina, but no one seems know her. No one except Hoshina Soshiro, who's been told Ashirogami's real name from Mina herself - along with stories from her childhood. This tips Hoshina off to Kafuka's true origins. Luckily for him, Hoshina doesn't particularly care about that sort of thing.

Unluckily for him, Hoshina isn't convinced that's the only secret Kafuka's hiding.
