The Dead Boy Detectives opening credits and its details:

Important to note: Steve Yockey has said several times that Dead Boy Detectives is like the Hardy Boys on acid. They tried to maintain the very psychedelic and colorful aspect of the comics, whilst also working with darker shades.

The lighting is said to be a mix of blues and purples, but it is also a play on the four main colors of the heroes: Edwin (blue), Charles (red), Crystal (purple) and Niko (pink).

I find Crystal and Charles' relationship super interesting (relationship in general, I'm not really talking about shipping here).

Because on one hand-- she IS noticing things Edwin let go unspoken, and Charles DOES have some deep seated anger and grief.

But on the other hand, she is ABSOLUTELY projecting her own issues and traumas with violent men onto Charles. Like, he has some anger he hasn't dealt with, for sure, but he doesn't have Anger Issues in the way she claims. We never once see him him angrier than a situation calls for, in my opinion.

In the Devlin house, he's seeing a man brutally murder a woman and children. I ALSO would have tried to intervene.

With the Night Nurse, she had just mentally tortured both Charles and Crystal, and was threatening to essentially send Edwin back to Hell. Again, I for sure would have murdered her.

Charles is a generally fairly emotional guy, and extremely protective. But I truly don't think he has severe rage issues the way Crystal consistently insinuates, I think he has some unresolved issues and they trigger HER issues and she ends up projecting a lot.

Their friendship is fascinating to me because she's in this weird place of being both right and wrong when it comes to him, and giving a weird mixture of helpful and unhelpful advice.

And HE'S in this weird place of pinning a lot of his unresolved issues with being dead so young onto HER. As much as his death is better than his life was in many ways, as much as he's happy with Edwin and wouldn't change it-- he still died way too young and struggles with that in a way Edwin doesn't (Hell has a way of granting perspective, I think). And here's this living girl who can see him and can remind him what it's like to be alive and have a taste of what he might've done-- flirt and date and have a girlfriend.

So here are these two people who are genuinely friends, genuinely care about each other, and are partially right about each other-- while also being kind of hilariously wrong and projecting their own issues without realising.

Idk I don't think this makes a lot of sense I've just been thinking while bored at work and now I'm word-vomiting

There's no way to be casual about these two.

his running away with edwin was one-half refusal to let go of life and one-half already sworn fealty

I want this into a fic 😭

Edwin escapes hell 2 years earlier and ends up hanging around St. Hilarions because he doesn't know where to go and what to do.

He ends up finding Charles a lot earlier as well and just kind of sticks around the energetic and kind boy.

Completely by accident, Charles manages to find out that there's a ghost that hanging out at the school and starts talking to Edwin (theres only so many times that the exact book he's looking for materializes out of nowhere before he gets suspicious). They become the strangest of friends, and Edwin is incredibly fond of him.

They spend two years getting to know one another by chalkboard and notes.

After one of the larger breaks, where Charles comes to school, wincing in pain and hiding bruises, Edwin starts to feel protective. Charles is his friend. His alive boy.

Edwin ends up following Charles home during one summer, and does his best to distract from any an all violence (he can't get too involved. That's how Lost and Found will get notified) but he can turn the power off in the house to distract Paul long enough for him to forget that he was about to hurt his own son.

He can knock on the front door. He can move objects so that Paul doesn't use them as weapons.

It's not much, but it's all he can do for now. (it's not until later, when Edwin learns magic that he realizes he could've done more)

Edwin doesn't manage to distract the boys from hurting Charles. He's in the library and doesn't even realize it's happening until it's too late (Charles is supposed to be safe at school, where Paul can't hurt him. But violent people are everywhere)

When Charles can see him, he knows it's too late. Still, he does his best to keep him company, prepares himself to say goodbye to his friend when Death comes to claim him.

It doesn't happen. Charles stays with him.
