Dazai’s Family

I have been thinking about Dazai’s family lately. Let’s say Dazai has No Longer Human since he was born, wouldn’t that mean Dazai’s mother or father might have an ability similar to Dazai’s? Imagine a family, in that family, each person has an ability allows them to do something with abilities. Imagine that Dazai has a sister; the sister’s ability allows her to copy abilities. Or imagine a brother; the brother’s ability allows him to learn everything about the person’s ability he touches. You see what I mean?

Another thing I was thinking about is the possibility of Dazai’s family being a family full of assassins. Yes, I know, it’s probably too early to think of something like that but hear me out. We already have a family of assassins, and it’s Kyouka’s family.

Kyouka grew up in a family of assassins, which caused her to normalize assassination. Even though she said that she doesn’t wish to kill anyone anymore, she won’t hesitate to kill someone if deserved. It’s because she grew up like this. Because she was surrounded by murder, even before her parents died.

Now, I want you to think of Dazai. As far as we know, Dazai had already normalized death even before he was fourteen years old. A random fourteen years old child would tremble out of fear if they witnessed a murder. But Dazai didn’t. When Mori killed the previous boss in front of Dazai, Dazai... didn’t react at all. To be honest, he looked like he was used to this kind of stuff. He didn’t even sweat a bit, which is... totally not normal for a fourteen years old child who just witnessed assassination.

This makes me think that he grew up in a place surrendered by murder and death. Just like Kyouka. Dazai normalized death and murder at a very young age, just like Kyouka.

And I need people to know that this is definitely not normal for a child whose parents are only abusive. Yes, I know that there is no way Dazai’s parents are not abusive. And yes, I know that there is no way his parents were actually very kind to him.

What I’m trying to say is, when Dazai was only fifteen years old, he literally shot a corpse many times without stopping, calling it a “mercy killing” while having that inhuman expression on his face. You see what I mean?

There is no way that his parents are only abusive.

There must be something more. An abused child would surely have many problems on their head, but they just wouldn’t do what Dazai did. Because what Dazai did, is inhuman.

It’s not something that a human would do. Well, at least not something a “normal” human would do.

I honestly believe that Dazai’s family being full of assassins would explain why Dazai is like that— I believe it would explain why Dazai is like himself. Because that would mean he was born to be an assassin, that would mean he grew up to be an assassin.

Again, let’s say that Dazai has his ability, No Longer Human, since he was born. That would mean it’s possible that his family have abilities similar to No Longer Human. It’s possible they might have a abilities that allows them to do something with other people’s abilities.

Which is, great for assassination.

With no doubt, Dazai’s ability sounds simple at first. But the thing is, Dazai has an insane ability. It allows him to nullify any ability, and thanks to that, even the strongest ability user in the world would become no more than an ordinary person if they face Dazai, just like Kunikida said.

As you can see, it is a very useful ability. Similar abilities to Dazai’s, such as copying abilities and more, would be amazing for assassination.

Not to mention that Dazai was literally taught for these kind of things. And no, I honestly do not believe that Mori was the one who taught him. Dazai was Mori’s patient, he wasn’t his student and Dazai still had some skills, even before he became a mafioso.

In conclusion, I believe that Dazai’s family is full of assassins. I honestly think that it would explain many things about Dazai, and I don’t think it’s not possible at all.

Real life Dazai’s real name was Tsushima Shuuji (Dazai Osamu was his pen name), which means it’s possible that BSD Dazai’s real name might be Tsushima Shuuji too. And that would also mean that Dazai changed his name to Dazai when he met Mori.

Because Tsushima Shuuji would be an assassin,

Dazai Osamu was a mafioso and is a detective.

They’d not be the same person.

If Dazai’s real name is Tsushima Shuuji, that would mean his family is called “Tsushima Family”. A family full of assassins. If this theory is true, that would mean Dazai probably ran away or was abandoned.

In the fifteen light novel, it’s said that he is not an orphan, which means his family is probably alive right now. And it would also make it possible that his family might appear in the story one day. I believe that they are surely going to have a major role.

bsd spoilers if you haven't read the manga

I've been thinking a lot about how Yosano and Dazai mirror each other. They both grew up under the supervision of a man that subjected them when they were both very young to violent acts that ended up causing s whole lot of the trauma they are still (not) dealing with today.

With Yosano, we see her being affected by the suffering of those under her care and the way copes is she by just not getting attached by provoking the violence herself, thus puting an emotional barrier between her and her patients.

Dazai, on the other hand, becomes apathetic to other people's pain. Yet he searching for meaning inflicting pain to others. I'd say the way he's learned to deal after leaving the mafia is with this is turning the violence towards himself (the suicide attempts, getting himself in harm's way...)

I think one key difference is how much Mori and the war destroyed Yosano mentally vs how much Dazai succeeded in the Mafia. And then again I wonder how much different she would be if Fukuzawa hadn't fought Mori and basically stole her from under his grasp. How would Mafia!Yosano be different from the one we know today? How much different Dazai would be is someone had pulled him from the Mafia sooner?

I feel like it's no coincidence that Yosano and Dazai barely interact in the manga. Either because they remind each other too much of Mori, and talking means either they face the monster together or they turn themselves into the monster. I wonder how scared they are of each other.

The butterflies surrounding Yosano (Part 2/2)

Two weeks ago, I did an analysis on Yosano’s butterfly hairpin. I tried to identify it and discovered that it might have a reference to a famous Greek mythology, so I drew some parallels there. If you’re interested and are also wondering about what meaning the butterfly holds and how it ties into Yosano’s story, then you can read it here. In this part, I will focus on the other butterflies appearing in the manga.

If I remember correctly, we have never seen butterflies appearing around Yosano before chapter 59. However, it makes sense since before this chapter we were never directly shown how she uses her ability (this might make more sense when you’ve read the first part but otherwise you don’t need to read it to understand the rest). The first time is here when the ADA was framed as the terrorists by the DOA.

Showing the butterflies and showing them in such detail must hold some kind of significance. Just like all the flowers shown have probably some hidden meaning, I’m convinced the butterflies do too. That’s why I tried to identify them. This time it was a tiny bit easier than in the first part of my analysis. Anyhow, the butterfly species I suspect them to be is this one:

This beauty here is called Papilio ulysses. And yes, it is again a reference to a Greek mythology figure. You might know Ulysses better under the name Odysseus, the protagonist of the Odyssey mythology. I won’t go into greater detail about the story but basically Odysseus is the king of Ithaca who fought ten years in the Trojan war. After the war, he tried to return home but because of several Greek gods’ disapproval he encountered many hardships, barely escaping death. At the end, it took him ten more years until he finally returned home to his wife.

Do you see how well this fits here? Using the Ulysses butterfly here is an ingenious way to mark what lies ahead, namely the ADA’s Odyssey to prove their innocence, restore their reputation and to return back home to their agency. Similar to Odysseus, the ADA must overcome many obstacles, deceptions and temptations to give up.

Interestingly, this same species is shown later again. But first I’d like to describe a bit more in the following how this arc shares the same major themes as the mythology and then I will go further why this species is used a second time.
