I went to a step show to support my roommate. I wouldn't usually go to a step show but she made it look cute so it was very entertaining and I enjoyed it.

I went to Art Attack that UMD SEE hosted. I've never been to a concert on campus before and it was $10 to see 2Chainz and Ty Dolla $ign. Ty Dolla $ign didn't show up and 2 Chainz came in the last 30 minutes of the concert and it was rainy so it wasn't great. There were still other performers though.

I love the design of the characters overall and the color choices in the first photo with the house and skeleton man. The character design is great and you should definitely play up the colors like in the first picture throughout the rest of the comics. I think it will add to that quirky and strange feel to the comic. Have you thought about how you’re going to present the comic in terms of binding it or just displaying it page by page? If not, my thoughts are that you make a physical book and make copies of some of the pages to display as excerpts at ArtsFest.

(ugly photos of ugly doodles !!)
This is me practicing some more, getting a feel for drawing. I’ll be drafting my comic book over my spring break (which starts now). That charming dude in the first photo is Steve, our main character. He and his family, who are moving away from their neighborhood, take a bit of a wrong turn and end up in a different world inhabited by skeleton people. The stories revolve around their new life in this strange little world. First photo also shows some of the work from the worldbuilding workshop I’m taking– the world I’m creating is where the comic will take place. Second photo, Steve’s wife. There’s also Steve’s son and his mom (the grandma with no chill). Names will happen soon, I promise.

Wow, your project seems very challenging but I think it’ll come out cool and interesting either way. I’m not familiar with Norse mythology but I do know a little about Greek mythology and the visuals for that are always interesting to see. I think you should just go for the fire. It may not look perfect to you but to other people it will be great. You’re your own worst critic. Just do your best because that’s all you can do and try not to get discouraged. Either way you’ll figure it out. If it doesn’t turn out the way you want it then nobody has to know. Just call it an artistic choice.
The link above shows how I will go about making the fire effect for the beginning. This is one of the parts that I’m really excited for, but also the part I feel could end the most poorly overall because fire can look very fake very easily. While what he shows will work well for the beginning of the fire coming into view, I will need to adjust the base of the fire for the later parts, so it can be large enough to basically engulf an entire corner of the wall. In addition, I’m going to try to make a bit of a longer loop to try to make it less noticeable.

I definitely feel what you’re feeling about the lack of motivation. The hardest part is to just get up and put yourself in front of your project. After you do that though, and jump right in, then time will go by fast and you will have made more progress. Personally, I work all at once rather than working on something little by little so I understand the challenge of pacing these Capstone projects. My advice is to just dive right in and your momentum will pick up the deeper you get into your project.
Stumped
I have discovered that halfway through the semester is when I really start to drag, both academically and creatively. I’m finding it harder than I thought it would be to finish my capstone project because I cannot motivate myself to do anything that isn’t due like the next day. It is kind of like writer’s block, but different. I’m really really trying to get over it though. Now that I’m on spring break, I have a lot to accomplish to get done on time. I think that I just need to push myself a little harder to start working on it. Hopefully once I do start working, it will be easier to make some progress. I think other art scholars are experiencing the same thing, but I don’t know. Hopefully it isn’t just me dragging and making slow progress.

I'm basically done with this drawing now. It's the first personal drawing that I've done using techniques I learned in an art class. I've never taken an actual drawing class before this semester and I found it really helpful in doing this drawing.

This is an interesting painting using hands as a subject to deliver a strong message.

My mind just exploded

I’ve been trying to decide how I want to display my work at Arts Fest. I’m on the fence between having the works there or taking pictures of the works and having them printed to add a photography aspect which I’ve wanted to explore. I’ve shown in other posts snapshots of hands in whole paintings. I like the look of details of paintings and statues. I was thinking about adding that aspect in and showing details of my drawings and paintings. It’s also a way for me to get comfortable looking up close at my pieces. Usually I don’t like to get too close because I feel like it looks better from farther seats. However, when I took a snapshot of the hands in my self portrait oil painting I loved seeing the imperfections and brush strokes.

The other day I had my brother take pictures of my mom's hands with a teacup so that I could use it as a reference picture. I made him call me on FaceTime so that I could make she he's getting the right poses and angles.

I went to a discussion about gender roles in the Ethiopian-Eritrean community. My roommate was hosting the event and she's Ethiopian so I went along to support her. The discussion was very interesting and gave me insight into their community that was relevant to my own cultural community.

Alice Bailly
Self-Portrait, 1917
Went to the Women’s Art Museum in Washington, D.C.and was inspired by this painting. I love the way the artist depicts her hands in this self portrait. The shape of the hands are similar to the way my mind processes shapes when I am painting.
