This has been a topic in one of my discord groups today and I’m so curious what everyone’s approach is as a writer.
Writing linearly means starting at the beginning of the story and writing each scene in chronological order from beginning to end.
Writing non-linearly means you might start midway through the story and write the beginning later, or you might write scenes at random and join them up later, or you add in placeholders as you write to go back to later (like “add action scene here”).
Outlining means coming up with a sequence of plot points to guide the story - i.e. planning/mapping out what the main story beats will be throughout it.
Personally I’m a linear writer, and I don’t outline. I have a loose idea of where the story is going to go, but that’s it. And I can’t skip scenes or use placeholder text — my brain starts shrieking at me lmao.
#poll#i dont know if i now qualify as a nonlinear writer? my nonlinearity in main part consists of like#writing a conversation or a handful of lines up ahead in the fic and then greatly reworking them when i arrive at that point#i prefer to proceed linearly and without an outline but i do Know What Is Happening#by around the 30% mark - like i know that x y z notes need to be addressed in such and such ways. and i just feel out the pacing between#those notes. but i carry as much as possible in my head bc its better to not put it down

The process of examining a person psychiatrically and then altering or reducing his status in consequence is known in hospital and prison parlance as bugging, the assumption being that once you come to the attention of the testers you will either automatically be labelled crazy or the process of testing itself will make you crazy. Thus psychiatric staff are sometimes seen not as discovering whether you are sick, but as making you sick; and ‘Don’t bug me, man’ can mean, ‘Don’t pester me to the point where I’ll get upset.’ Sheldon Messinger has suggested to me that this meaning of bugging is related to the other colloquial meaning, of wiring a room with a secret microphone to collect information usable for discrediting the speaker.

Shout out to characters who want to be used. Shout out to characters who are so desperate to be worth something that they'll endure anything. Shout out to characters who build their entire self worth around being useful, being a tool. Shout out to characters who don't care how they are treated, as long as someone pays them any attention at all
