On March 16, reports from foreign media revealed that the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recently conducted raids on multiple warehouses belonging to Amazon and Flipkart. The crackdown aimed to curb the distribution of non-compliant products, resulting in the seizure of numerous uncertified goods.

Earlier this month, BIS raided an Amazon warehouse in Lucknow, seizing 215 toys and 24 handheld blenders, all of which lacked BIS certification. According to an official statement, a similar operation was carried out last month at an Amazon warehouse in Gurugram. During that raid, authorities confiscated 58 aluminum foils, 34 metal water bottles, 25 toys, 20 handheld blenders, seven PVC cables, two food blenders, and one speaker—all found to be uncertified.
In parallel efforts, BIS also raided a Flipkart warehouse in Gurugram, operated by Instakart Services Pvt Ltd. Authorities seized 534 vacuum-insulated stainless steel bottles, 134 toys, and 41 uncertified speakers. Investigations linked these uncertified products to Techvision International Pvt Ltd. Subsequently, BIS conducted raids at two Techvision International facilities in Delhi, uncovering approximately 7,000 electric water heaters, 4,000 electric food blenders, 95 electric heaters, and 40 gas stoves—none of which had BIS certification.
Legal Actions & Penalties for Non-Compliance
Following these discoveries, BIS has initiated legal proceedings against the responsible entities for violating Sections 17(1) and 17(3) of the BIS Act of 2016. Additional cases from the recent seizures are currently under review.
Under Section 17 of the BIS Act, individuals found in violation may face a minimum fine of ₹200,000, with penalties reaching up to ten times the value of the goods sold or intended for sale. In severe cases, violators could also be subject to imprisonment for up to two years, depending on the gravity of the offense.

BIS mandates certification for various consumer products, including household pressure cookers, handheld blenders, and food mixers, as these items may pose safety risks if not properly regulated.
