"Medkit's Nightmare" Phighting! Analysis

I've recently began to enjoy Phighting, and I realllly like Medkit. And so, this segment from April Fool's 2024 is interesting to me! I think it absolutely creates an idea of Medkit's struggles. I need to ramble my thoughts and assumptions about it, and I'm confident I'm not the first to.

Let's look at how we get to the segment first. It's located on a long stretch of stacked tower modified from the original. Most players might not bother to make their way up, so why create this experience? Why put all these little n' vague yet telling elements in it? I say this because it's worthwhile to analyze by this alone.

Put in bullet paragraphs for easier reading:

We can first assume you're Medkit because the apparitions that run around imply it. Dialogue pointing out how you're a rebel, "Do I really want to work with a rebel on my team", "you traitor" to being a healer, "Please heal me", "Please just heal me", "useless support", or it being straight-up related to Subspace's behavior towards Medkit, "Hey!! Great seeing you!!", "How's that eye doing??" so we go from there ⠀⠀⠀

It's a long winding road with multiple "exits" that don't actually exist. Possible metaphor for how he can never escape being controlled—falsified ideas of having a way "out", such as leaving Blackrock to find home in the church, then moving to Crossroads to be freer of the Church in DITF, an endless cycle of searching for freedom that he cannot attain ⠀⠀⠀

Back to that dialogue from the apparitions, they imply he struggles in his journey in life post-Blackrock A LOT of that part of having paranoia about Subspace. He must be mixed up about Subspace in some way still. Why think of such insults of "traitor" or "Do I really want to work with a rebel on my team" (could also be said by phighters other than Subspace) if he doesn't give a shit about Subspace and what happened between them? ⠀⠀⠀

The pacing apparitions specifically have Subspace's running animation ⠀⠀⠀

He has stress from being a healer, since a lot of the comments are "heal me" "just heal me" "useless support" and so on obviously Medkit is very critical of himself even after leaving Blackrock. Moreso that he doesn't favor people to call him "Doc". I don't think he likes phights but joins them out of necessity of concern for for others (+ his friends being in phights) and to make money. He is not truly confident in his abilities, maybe even projects that onto other phighters/a mix between it being actual criticisms blown out of proportion from living under unethical authority at Blackrock ⠀⠀⠀

The Church of the True Eye and it's Father is probably represented by the Overseer's eye. With how it chases you in the dream implies another layer of lack of autonomy Medkit has. He may feel constantly on the run, maybe hypervigilant, aware of the hold the church has over him. And if he were ever to betray that trust, it wouldn't end well. The caught screen is not related to the church directly, as they do seem to take out/recruit one-eyed persons, but I think it is mostly a representation of his traumatic altercation with Subspace. It is the possibility of reliving the same level of trauma again if he fucks up. ⠀⠀⠀

There are many figures besides the running apparitions with white eyes and some sort of head accessory. Possibly representing his paranoia about other people that or/and representing higherups in any way—church members, Blackrock officers…especially as most of them are not eye-level with Medkit and specifically as none of them move, they're a staple in his life, a "statue" in it, different to the running apparitions that are more unpredictable. I don't want to say that one is more comfortable than the other, yet both the groups that control/have controlled Medkit at least have an expectancy to them (the stillness), Blackrock as a militant, structured faction afaik and the Church likely having its own conditions. However, people like Subspace and other phighters, are "free" and don't act a certain way that Medkit can predict, as they are individuals with their own autonomy unlike him (of course this isn't totally true). Most of his life has been lived under Blackrock, a place shows no care for the living e.g few soldiers of flesh and blood, Biografts not programmed for thought, focus on developing tech for violence and not life; so, he may be unused to interacting with others proper ⠀⠀⠀

The house at the end has an exit sign. But no doors, no windows are on the house and the original model of it DOES have those parts, so they've been intentionally removed. It's as if Medkit may have feelings of never feeling comfortable or safe. He's always splayed open and vulnerable, even trying to exist at whatever he can call home, a "safe" space, other people can see into him. At this moment, home must be the church because of the TVs included in the home, which I will associate with Broker due to the past TV room ⠀⠀⠀

TVs in Medkit's house = Broker offering Medkit a deal = Safe from Blackrock in exchange for control by Church = Medkit feels/is watched by broker at all times INVASIVELY = No life of his own. The Broker perpetuates Medkit's lack of freedom, and Scythe has a place in that as well. Despite his amicable relationships with them it's a pretense for the relationship actually being a subordinate-boss one ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

The end of the road is the house. The end of the road, his life, is the Church. Medkit cannot survive or live anymore. He feels stuck where he is with no other alternatives

I think Medkit is fabulous and a miserable, complex individual and my excitement for that is why I used way too many words. I also have probably been influenced and warped by my interpretation of canon by fan works on AO3 so do tell if I got any canonical lore incorrect!
