Cerberus does not like to refuse requests from spirits. His expression is tender as he fulfills that final request.       “He says it’s okay.”      It does not particularly matter that the living human, the one with the blood on his hands and the heartache in his eyes, may not believe him. Humans tend not to see the world beyond their own. But the spirit has calmed and that is the important thing. Cerberus smiles.      “Don’t blame yourself. Blame whatever killed him, if you must.” He doesn’t see why it matters; death is hardly the end, anyway.

Vanitas could barely find the words to respond to the stranger, so instead he just nodded, hesitantly wiping his hands off on his work trousers. He had to get the blood off him, get some cleanliness back into his body after the dirty wash of failure continued its course.

“They’re here right now, right?” 

Vanitas confirmed, although he couldn’t see exactly where the spirit would be. He looked over to where the stranger had been talking, trying to see the spirit of the boy who’s body still lay in front of him. 

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry...Please, go be at peace. I’ll make sure your body is taken care of.”

Vanitas could barely lift his head from the weight of his heart.

The patient was nothing more than a child, no older than 17, and Vanitas hadn’t been good enough, not prepared enough, not fast enough to save him.

Yes he’d held his hand during his final moments, muttered encouraging lies about him going to be alright, but that didn’t ease the pain of failure. Of knowing it was his fault his patient hadn’t survived. His blood was on his hands, literally too.

But at the other’s words, Vanitas managed to lift his head, to glance at the stranger who was talking as if the boy was still around.

“...What are you talking about...? How can you know he isn’t angry?”

The newly-deceased spirit is lingering at the young paramedic’s shoulder, insisting that he should not blame himself. He tried. Cerberus smiles at the spirit.       “They appreciated you holding their hand. It’s nice, not to die alone.”
