☁ astonishing [ k. bokuto ]

“cuddle me,” bokuto pouts as his hand pats the empty side of the bed.

you look over from your laptop before smiling softly, “we can do that later, i’m just- really overwhelmed right now is all. next time, okay?”

bokuto’s frown only deepens, but he pauses and rolls over to the other side of the bed anyways. and for a moment, you’re convinced that he’s okay again, and that bokuto is truly alright with falling asleep on his own.

however, within the next few minutes, his elbows are propped up and his head is peeking through the blanket covers with his chin resting on your shoulders. “are you done yet?”

you jumped at the sudden whisper-shout as a surprised laugh bubbled out of your chest. “not yet, koutaro. i’m going through a lot and i really need time for-”

“-cuddles?” bokuto interuppts. his eyes are similar to a golden retriever’s as he rolls over to the other side of the bed, his body twisted diagonally and head hanging off the bed, completely upside-down.

who knew he was that flexible?

you sigh, defeated. “alright.”

bokuto grins widely, eagerly patting the spot next to him. 

“but five more minutes, okay?” you finish, turning back to your laptop. it had been a while since you’d been able to take a breath, having being bombarded with emails, friendship and relationship issues, family emergencies and having nothing to hold you accountable. 

bokuto crosses his arms over his chest, turning to the opposite side of the bed and slouching so low that he looked as if he were folding over. “you’re so mean to me, you know that?”

you can’t help but laugh softly at his remark as you raise an eyebrow. “am i?”

he nods, as if he had never been more certain of anything else. “yes! i want cuddles, and you’re not giving me them!”

“koutaro, if you keep on saying that, i’m not going to give you them. i’m under a lot of stress, everything feels so weird and out of place, i feel weird and out of place, and-”

bokuto stops you then and there before dragging you over to the bed, reminding you that he had enough strength to take your hand and flop you over.

“cuddles.” 

it was not a suggestion. it was a command.

for a moment, you hesitate, and everything in your body is screaming at you to look at your laptop to see if that one person responded, if anyone bothered to talk to you, whatever it was. 

but you don’t, and let yourself relax.

surprisingly, it’s a lot more rewarding that you assumed it’d be.

his arms wrap around you, your head resting on his chest as his heartbeat taps in its own rhythm. bokuto’s hand is resting gently on your back and your body is nestled safely in his embrace. 

bokuto slowly begins to pat your back, at a slow rhythm while he stares up at the ceiling, as if not knowing what to say. but he plays with your hair anyway, humming a low tune and his fingers drumming against your shoulders.

you felt safe. warm. at home.

suddenly, you could feel bokuto’s smile across your cheek as his lips made its way to your forehead. “you have no idea how much i admire you, do you?”

you look up suddenly, the blankets shifting as you furrow your eyebrows. “i think you do a pretty amazing job of showing it, koutaro.”

“no, but- i should do more, you know??” his hands make exaggerated circles as he cocks his head. “you get what i mean, right? you’re always working or always stressed, so i thought- maybe you just- wanted cuddles.”

there’s a moment of hesitation where your brain is confused.

your head is spinning because no one’s ever really put in the effort to truly see you happy and say it directly. you feel confused because someone going out of their way to see you genuinely happy out of a true place of love is reaching out to you. you give a perplexed grin because someone treating you like this doesn’t feel… in place. you’ve only ever known people getting upset at you for not spending time with them, not them getting upset because you weren’t taking care of yourself.

with bokuto, you felt safe. you didn’t have to put on a mask. you didn’t have to change yourself so he could love you. he loved you for existing, and that was truly astonishing.
