Cleo threatening people is not anything new, far from it, but there had been something different about it that he could not quite put his finger on.

There was something in the way she was not leaning nonchalantly, no smirk on their lips.

In the way they did not slump, the way they normally do, in typical zombie fashion.

In the way they were always in the corner of his eyes, never behind him anymore. In the way he could hear her knees crackle when she jumped of the wall. In the way her sword pointed up, at throat height. The way she honed in on Jimmy while they were talking. Bared their teeth. Growled, low and dangerous. Only stepped back when he did.

They are no longer joking around. No longer poking and prodding just for the way the bear indignantly sputters, but working with a clear purpose.

She is protecting him.

When she went around to every single territory to plea for melons, that was another way to keep him alive, dignity be damned.

When they joined the rush for diamonds, when they joined a game they knew with certainty would end in death, it was all to gather resources. To keep him safe and gear up themselves, to be a force to be reckoned with.

Everything they have done since he started dying has been for the singular purpose of keeping him alive just that little bit longer.

(Because they both know that he will die in the end anyway — as will she)

They are probably doing it because her survival odds are lower alone, a little voice in his head whispers. They are a survivor, they once told him. One of the few things they have in common. It is pragmatic. That is all.

But then she tells him how they lied to Etho, gave away two of their freshly brewed potions, and he staggers.

Cleo is all about loyalty, he knows this. Maybe better than anyone. So lying to Etho, who they hold in high regard, that means something.

And if he does not talk as much on their way home – home – that is his own business.

ideal living situation is what i call the 'sitcom special' : having all your closest friends live in the same apartment building or neighborhood where you each have your own space but can wander in and out of eachothers homes at will, seemingly always welcome and never at bad times. and also all of you only have jobs when its important to the plot.

Nothing hits like "romantic couple and a third guy who's not dating either of them but is definitely a part of this dynamic"
