Throwback Thursday styling tips! Since I wasn’t feeling well and missed the chance to upload this week’s Wednesday Wig Hack, a friend of mine suggested that it would be a cool idea to talk about some wigs I have styled in the past. I have gotten questions about how to style “wavy spikes” like I did for my Dio (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure) wig so here is a little demo. You can also use this technique for characters like Nagito Komaeda (Dangan Ronpa), or Lancer / Diarmuid (Fate/Zero). :)

- First, you want to make your spike. Follow countless of spiking tutorials online for this step. :P Don’t apply too much hair product though because we will use heat on it so it still needs to be sort of soft and flexible - Use a flat iron, with the medium heat setting (I used 380 F for this), grab the spike where you want the wave to start. Bend you wrist so that the spike point downwards. Keep in mind, for this kind of wavy spikes, the pattern of wave will be down>up>down - Let go of the flat iron after a few seconds and immediately use your fingers to catch the spike to hold its shape until it cools down. (Use gloves if you’re sensitive to heat. My hands can’t feel a thing because I’m used to heat tools) - Go at it with the flat iron again! Grab the spike a good distance from the first wave, around 1 inch and a half for me. Then flip your wrist so that the spike points upwards - After a few seconds, let go of the flat iron and catch the spike with your hand again. If you want extreme curve near the tip, you can push the spike in towards the wig. Once it cools down, it should hold the shape - Now you can go in and “puff” up the spike by squeezing the sides. I use Got2B spiking glue on my fingers to lightly coat the spike throughout - Touch up the tip by adding another wave with the same steps as before. Use Got2B spray to seal the style. And you’re done! (Just kidding you have to do like 30 other spikes. Good luck 👌👌 )

How Fashion Influences Manga and Anime

The inspiration for all those clothes our favorite characters wear has to come from somewhere. While we can spectate where some creators get ideas for outfits, here are two popular examples of fashion’s influence on manga and in turn anime.

Naoko Takeuchi, the creator of Sailor Moon.

The Sailor Moon franchise exploded both in and out of Japan after the original manga was published from 1991-1997. The 1992 anime is now a beloved piece of Saturday morning nostalgia for kids around the world. Though much of the art from Sailor Moon is directly from the runway. These looks, including that iconic Queen Serenity dress, are from a 1992 fashion week.

Takeuchi has been influenced by more than just high fashion. She’s also taken inspiration from the outfits of figure skaters, idol groups, figures in fine art and, the most obvious of all, the streets of japan, where the seifuku (Japanese girls’ school uniform) is commonly found. Fashion from everywhere is infused into Sailor Moon as well Takeuchi’s other works, but if you think that’s simply because Sailor Moon is a girly show meant to appeal to girls then you are about to be proven wrong.

Hirohiko Araki, the creator of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure

Originally began to be published in 1986 and still ongoing, Jojo is a staple of boys manga that spiked in popularity outside of Japan thanks to its recent anime adaptation. It’s known for its cast of macho men (and the occasional woman) that each have their own unique, though supernatural, fighting style as well as their unique senses of fashion.

“Fashion is a part of each of the characters. Those wearing hats will keep them on, even in the ocean. The colors used were influenced by the designs of Versace, Moschino, Missoni and other Italian brands that were very trendy in the 80s when the series began,” - Hirohika Araki

Araki’s characters’ clothing designs and poses are inspired from fashion photography and illustrations.

The iconic hand-in-face pose from Jojo originates from the world of fashion which clearly has had its influence on the creators manga and anime for decades. Whether it be through magical girls or burly stand users or anything else, fashion has found a new audience through manga and anime whether audiences are aware of it or not.

Cómo hice los cosplays

Algún día de estos que me sienta con ganas subiré las fotos de cómo lo hice y explicaré brevemente el proceso de construcción de todos los cosplays!

La pena es que este año no hemos participado en el concurso de cosplay del Salón del Manga de Alicante y no tengo fotos de buena calidad, son todas hechas con el móvil Y_Y

Jojo’s bizarre adventures, para quien no haya visto/leído nada, ya está tardando.

Bueno, casi casi soy tan fornida como Dio. Se nota, no? xD

Cuarto y quinto cosplay, miku y kaito en Cantarella!

Ese año hice los dos cosplays en una semana, y eso que estaba con mi proyecto final de carrera (no se de donde saqué esa rapidez pero no creo que vuelva a pasar xD)

Estos cosplays fueron para el Salón del Manga de Alicante del 2014, y participamos de nuevo en el concurso de cosplay grupal, como el año anterior. Esta actuación fue peor que la anterior pero nos volvimos a llevar una mención de honor!! ( el año anterior fue “mención de honor por la costura” y este por “ese toque a la actuación”) Aunque fue fatal me reí mucho después <3

Segundo cosplay! Esta vez de Black Rock Shooter, el cual nunca he llegado a ponerme, pero iba a ser para el salón del manga de Murcia de noviembre del 2013. No pudimos ir por problemas de salud justamente esa mañana u_u

Este fue un proyecto de reciclaje, y no de completa confección como suelo hacer.

-Gabardina: de una vieja que ya no servía le quité tooodos los pespuntes marrones que tenía de adorno ( fue un poco pesadilla, porque la mitad de la gabardina estaba pegada en vez de cosida y costaba de despegar), volví a coser a mano con hilo negro por los pespuntes y todos los otros objetos de adorno como la capucha(de otra chaqueta vieja), las estrellas y las líneas de las mangas. y porqué a mano? porque no puedo coser polipiel con mi pequeña máquina :_3.

-Botas: Simplemente unas botas que gasto mucho a las que le añadí el cuello que quité de la gabardina y que lo adorné con un borde blanco. Lo cosí todo de forma fácil para poder quitarlo después de utilizar el cosplay.

-Llama azul: Botellica de agua azul abierta, plancharla (ojo! con papel vegetal entre la plancha y el plástico y un cartón grueso entre plástico y tabla de planchar para que  tenga una superficie lisa y fuerte). El resultado es una plancha de plástico ondulada. Yo recorté dos llamas de diferente forma y las pegué con un poco de celo de doble cara (un gran aliado para hacer estas cosicas y para pequeñas roturas del cosplay mientras lo llevas) y luego unir la llama a un ganchito o pinza y ya está!

-Espada: lo que todos hacemos: cartón, papel, cola blanca y pintura, no hay nada especial, ni luces ni partes móviles.

Y como sé que algún día me lo pondré volveré a hacer la espada, o quizás el cañón y mejorar algunas partes!
