card spoilers for artem's sweet woven memories sr because it is making me feel insane enough to write meta. also some critique of artem's writing in year 3, and how it's been fixed in year 4. you have been warned.

first up: the proposal.... 2! kinda?

and then you get artem who notices rosa's interest, and asks scott to teach him how to make the cat's cradle heart himself. and once he does, he then offers the heart to rosa.

this might just be my complete and utter bias speaking (me Really not liking artem's second anniversary ssr and most of his year 3 ssrs), but this has the polar opposite energy of his second anniversary proposal.

it ties back to a prevalent artemrosa theme: the red thread of fate. artem has to work hard to create the heart, since he isn't very good with crafts.

this fits with how artemrosa has a unique depiction of the red thread trope - both of them have to work hard and keep choosing each other, because while fate brings them together, it's their actions that keep them together. artem literally has to work to keep the red thread heart together. it couldn't be more direct.

the scene is also a beautiful depiction of artem's vulnerability when he's around rosa.

it almost feels like... a redo of second anniversary? bc imo, second anni's proposal felt very cookie cutter, impersonal, and driven out of a bizarre sense of carefully planned possessiveness not seen in any other artem card prior to that point.

but back to the card - as the plot goes on, the red thread theme gets mentioned several more times.

as well as a lot of very cute banter! it reminded me a lot of artem's railroad ssr. very fun, and very light!

but the most important part? imo? this.

as alluded to above, artem's second anniversary ssr, as well as SEVERAL of his year 3 ssrs, introduced the "artem is a possessive daddy dom who proposes to rosa without having talked to her about it once, just to make sure she doesn't leave him and also he gets really weird about insisting her memories of sparklers and fireworks should now be only associated with him?? also a few other cases of really out of pocket jealousy plots" disaster.

in my opinion, these cards were immensely out of character.

"addy what about atmospherics?" entirely different handling of jealousy. after acting like a rambling jackass, artem gets shoved away, passes out on the floor, and then nearly cries because rosa got mad at him and he knew he fucked up. it was obvious artem hadn't experienced this kind of jealousy before. he also acted rashly and immediately regretted his actions; they weren't premeditated. so no, not even remotely close. por una cabeza also included a jealousy plot - one where artem very notably learned his lesson from atmospherics, and is okay with rosa making whatever decision SHE wants to make. he directs his ire not at rosa, but at the man who only cared about rosa for her rising popularity.

hell, by the point of his railroad ssr, artem is joking with her about how she was staring at the butlers in the castle.

year 4 has been a godsend for several reasons, but rerouting back to how artem was written in year 1 and year 2 has been the BEST.

artem has always been in a mentorship position for rosa. and even so, he wants to be equals with her and to see her live her best life. he never abuses his seniority or experience. he wants to be her "fellow traveler" - to fight corruption together and to share each other's burdens.

in his little hot springs ssr in year 4, he even states this applies romantically as well. when rosa asks what he would do if she wound up with someone else. artem says he would let go and watch on, simply content she was happy.

possessiveness and restriction - and by extension, second anniversary and year three - go against literally every single aspect of artem's character AND his relationship with rosa.

artem's character arc revolves a lot around vulnerability. and allowing himself to be vulnerable. at work he has to be this impenetrable, emotionless "robot" of an attorney - stuck on a pedestal, wearing a mask he's crafted to optimally achieve his goals and keep his loved ones safe. can't expose any vulnerabilities to be taken advantage of, after all.

the whole concept of his character is that beneath it all... he is just a dude. he is an idealistic individual who is serious and dedicated in all he does, and handles his feelings for rosa in an immensely earnest way. but despite his best efforts, he is unskilled socially. he makes mistakes and learns from them. this is the most important part, imo. he DOES mess up. he IS flawed. but in years 1, 2, and 4, his mistakes have always been in character........ and also depicted as something to grow from. he gets to be vulnerable.

being a possessive daddy dom isn't being vulnerable, it's acting out on unaddressed insecurities.

artem being gentle, but also passionate and deeply in love with rosa doesn't have to be depicted in such a... bizarre jekyll and hyde manner. i was very unhappy with tot following his second anniversary ssr. i stopped playing all together.

so i'm very happy year 4 seems to have steered back to artem's previous characterization, but in a way where he has undergone the proper growth, development, and conflicts befitting his character at this point in the timeline. he hasn't regressed; he has been rerouted and has grown.
