OMG! Another Otter Tale fan! I hope you post about it. I really like it, even though I have mixed thoughts about its quality.

Ok, I'm going on a spiel, a rage, a tirade if you will.

I will keep this very spoiler free. Revealed details are things you learn early on into the story anyways.

Otter Tale, a Civ Review So Far

First off, if it wasn't for lacking in time, I'd've finished it by now. I actually deeply enjoy this VN so far, and it might be one of my favorite FVNs that I've ready ever. I was able to get a good bit in (about the end of Chapter 4 I think?) during a camping trip but work has eaten my time again.

Otter Tale so far has had what I would describe as an amazingly slow-burn story. The mystery (and by mystery, it's really just hidden previous events) is centered around the MC Owen's past, where he had what looks like sad injury (loss of webbing and a dislike for swimming, which is wild because Owen is an otter), and other traumas. The story doesn't just give it to you, since the discovery of the story is from Owen slowly revealing details about his past to the side character Ollie.

This slow burn slice-of-life story. Honestly, some people may call it boring, but I super enjoy a story that takes it time, and it just feels like a nice step into Owen's life during the course of this story instead of the usual action-packed or horror stories like Eden's Reach or Echo.

I also enjoy just how normal all the characters are, including Owen. He's not a bumbling idiot, he makes logical choices that anyone else would make, especially given his past trauma. I never liked how the characters acted in Adastra, it all seemed so irrational and ill-thought for the future rulers of the empire. Owen makes a surprisingly tacit decision almost day 1 of his long vacation: better look at getting a job, if not for money, to also kill time while Ollie works. Damn I love an actually intelligent MC.

Nevermind the worldbuilding, the whole "Otters like rocks" bracelets (which I totally won't be stealing), and other touches are all so good. The fact that the city was built by otters can be seen in the Venice-like streets, heavy commercial fishing, and other mannerisms.

Add to that: island of gay shirtless otters? SIGN ME THE FUCK UP! It's not all otter's tho, and I feel like the representation of other species has been tacit and well done being as the location is a primarily otter-based settlement.

The art is fantastic. I've always loved OTTER's art-style and it has been very well done so far. 10/10 no notes.

Now, I want to give OTTER one huge prop that disagress with you a bit: I think this FVN is high-quality as FUCK. The CG's and animations are really good and represent an extra level of effort that wasn't necessary but adds such a nice touch and shows a level of devotion that I can appreciate. Heck, in some scenes it changes the way everything looks or the perspective, just to aid the story along. Some of the CG's and special arts have animations too! At one point where Owen isn't in control (vague to preserve the story), YOU THE PLAYER don't get to control the rate at which the text goes by, which very well represents what is happening in this particular, traumatic scene.

THERE'S A FUCKING MINI GAME IN THERE! OTTER did not have to do that but like, it's a fun little break and I honestly spent like half an hour on it.

Honestly, I've super appreciated all the little touches OTTER has added. I pick up on a lot of them and each one is a tasty treat and serious sign of devotion to this project.

I am heavily considering supporting OTTER on Patreon, granted that my original plan to donate on Itch.io has been foiled just a bit thanks to recent events. As a note, I've NEVER felt the need to support someone on Patreon before, it's out of character for me, that's how much I appreciate this FVN and OTTER's work.

To conclude, the slow-burn nature and utter devotion seen through the detailing of Otter Tale is exquisite and are the things that draw me to it so profusely. I really suggest it if you haven't read it. It's linked on his Bluesky page, but since Itch.io is having issues, here's a copy of the link directly to the page.
