Coming Down, 2015
This piece was first painted using a watercolor brush on Photoshop. Then I overlayed a GIF of a waterfall on top to produce the collapsing effect.
That GIF can be found here.
A non-animated version (Paint only) can be seen here!

“Rashad?” | Photoshop CS5
A trial animation done by redrawing the figure every frame. Malina and her zombie-handed brother can be seen in previous concept art!

“Rashad?” animation stills | Photoshop CS5
Still frames for the “Rashad?” animation. I loosely sketched the main movement, then created the basic shapes and facial expressions, and finally applied lights and shadows, plus the zombie hands. The background constantly evolved as well.

“When I look at the Stars” | Painting in Photoshop
A test of different brushes and textures, my main focus was to imitate the natural looking texture of skin. Emotion-wise, I wanted to showcase a mixture of loneliness but self discovery. Rashad is a character from a previous character study.
This can also be seen on my sketchblog FrightonaChristmasnight.tumblr.com.

“Rashad and Malina” | Photoshop and Paint Tool Sai
Concepts for two apocalypse survivors for a personal project with friends. They are a brother and sister pair, and can be seen in other works as well.

“Light the Way!” | Digital Media
As I experimented with textures, I decided I wanted to focus on a sense of personal accomplishment. This same character can be found in my previous concept art! (middle)

“June Rhodes” | Digital Media
A portrait study using several references, I want to paint skin so that it seemed translucent and life-like. I wanted to use an overall simple theme with the bold, flat expression to give the impression that a relatively “docile” girl can pack a punch, too.

“Eyeball Witch” | Digital Media
Concept art for a witch who is loosing her eyesight, so borrows it from others! This work was painted in Paint Tool Sai and moved to Photoshop for animation. No witch, of course, is complete without a black cat!

A self portrait, I wanted to convey a sort of chaotic, but ordered, flow.

“Jupiter” Animation Stills | Photoshop
Stills for “Jupiter.” Each piece was manually moved until they were separated completely. Then I copied each frame and reversed the order so that the gif would flow if it was looped.

“Jupiter” | Photoshop
Named after the song by the Futureheads, I wanted to convey someone breaking through their sad exterior to reveal a vulnerable inside. I used hot pink for the background because I feel like it gives a sense of energy, and after an explosion energy is released.

“Eating Away” | Digital Media
Based on the phrase “Something’s eating away at you...”, I wanted to try a semi-literal but semi-abstract twist.

“Fruit of Sorrow: From this nothingness I will make something.” | Digital Media
Using bold composition and a monochromatic color scheme, I wanted to convey a person who is falling apart (very literally in this case) after numerous failed trails, shown through the flowers they produce. In their grieving they have yet to realize they have succeeded (shown through the red flower), but it is not in their line of view.
