Lily was right though? Snape was spying on them to get them expelled. If my bullies weren't tormenting me i wouldn't go out looking for them or thinking of plans of getting them expelled, i would just enjoy my peace with my friends. Snape isnt a innocent poor little victim. If snape hated them so much he would ignore them not cause more trouble with them, lily wasn't victim-blaming Snape. Snape was obsessed with them. Lily understood why Snape hated them and she didn't like them either but she doesn't want to listen to every one of Snape's rants about them, she would also defend him. Did you want want her to encourage his revenge fantasies and help him? What did you people expect Lily to do? Go along with Snape's negative feelings? What good would that do?
A very tragic aspect of Snape’s situation as a victim of bullying is the way he’s asking for help and acknowledgment of his suffering, and the wrong of his tormentors.
‘I know your theory,’ said Lily, and she sounded cold. ‘Why are you so obsessed with them, anyway? Why do you care what they’re doing at night?’
‘I’m just trying to show you they’re not as wonderful as everyone seems to think they are.’
“Obsessed with them”–Now, that is a peculiar word to use. There’s a reason: the victim will always be obsessed over their bully(ies). Because they are on the look-out for any attack that might come. Because they are distressed by the presence of someone who harmed them, who will harm them. It is not a victim’s fault. Just as they didn’t ask to be the target of some horrible show play, it’s incredibly disrespectful to shift the blame on the victim for being constantly worried. Why are they obsessing over their bullies? Because the bullies put them in danger with their violence. However, the way Lily says it is like accusing Snape for not getting over what they do. Easier said than done: She’s not (often) on the receiving end of Potter’s wand.
Severus Snape wants someone who understands and agrees with him so much. He wants people to say as well that what they do is not mere innocent child’s play and that Snape’s to be taken seriously. It’s heartbreaking because what he suffers is already far beyond the boundaries of the acceptable at school, but nobody cares. No, not even Lily. There’s always an excuse to cover up the marauders, always a tolerance that Severus never gets, for reasons he can’t control: his poverty and low working-class, his “weirdness”, his House and the people who live in it, his half-breed status, his (un)popularity, his body, his gender even.
There’s a problem if a victim of bullying needs to find ways to show their tormentors are out of their right and not at all “cool” for their disgusting acts such as verbal and physical violence, as if those later weren’t enough.
This is the consequence of adults–the headmaster and the other professors–barely lifting a finger for children who need help, and instead blaming everything on them.
Apparently they’re even responsible for constantly standing on guard, in thoughts just like in the body.
Snape reacted so fast it was as though he had been expecting an attack.
That’s why Snape shifts to talk about the marauders when Lily tries to accuse him for hanging out with the wrong crowd.
In fact, haters who cannot seem to refrain from accusing Snape of how bad he is as a teacher including when fans are discussing something else entirely, are in a curious way emulating Snape as a teenager (the difference, of course, being that Snape has not harmed them since he’s fake).
‘It was Dark Magic, and if you think that’s funny –’
‘What about the stuff Potter and his mates get up to?’ demanded Snape. His colour rose again as he said it, unable, it seemed, to hold in his resentment.
‘What’s Potter got to do with anything?’ said Lily.
Yes, Avery and Mulciber have done wrong but what about Potter and his friends? what about them? would you say the same thing regarding them? Do you see they’re in the wrong as well?
I remind everyone that Snape has just nearly been killed by Sirius Black–or as he believes, the whole marauder crew–and whilst he was silenced from every talking about the incident’s details, his bullies received a slap on the wrist.
More horrifying even: they got to spread a distorted tale of Potter “rescuing” Snape from his foolishness, and not the reality of Black sending Snape to his death in the first place, let alone Snape’s version of all the marauders trying to kill him and Potter just getting cold feet as he realized he was also putting them all in danger (he couldn’t know exactly who wanted it or not).
This is why, when Lily says, ‘And you’re being really ungrateful’, it’s tortuous. She’s saying that Snape’s pain doesn’t count, that he’s lying, that he’s being the bad person here when he’s not (after all, what does Lily think she knows?)
Snape’s whole face contorted and he spluttered, ‘Saved? Saved? You think he was playing the hero? He was saving his neck and his friends’ too! You’re not going to – I won’t let you –’
A notable remark is that Snape is concerned for Lily as well, concerned that she’s so naive and easily been deceived by Potter, who’s ready to do everything–even manipulating and lying to the girl he so wants to possess, as he proves in 7th year–so Lily will think the best of him; he’s dangerous against Lily as well and the motive is a clear red flag:
‘Let me? Let me?’
Lily’s bright green eyes were slits. Snape backtracked at once.
‘I didn’t mean – I just don’t want to see you made a fool of – he fancies you, James Potter fancies you!’ The words seemed wrenched from him against his will. ‘And he’s not … Everyone thinks … Big Quidditch hero –’ Snape’s bitterness and dislike were rendering him incoherent, and Lily’s eyebrows were travelling further and further up her forehead.
Because Potter is good on a broom, everyone is willing to overlook the fact that he torments Snape and those in the corridors around in a particularly cruel and prejudiced way.
However, as soon as Lily seems to acknowledge Snape’s point–that they are horrible human beings, that what they do is wrong (and maybe, that Snape’s suffering is not normal)–Snape is so relieved he doesn’t hear what Lily says right after.
‘I know James Potter’s an arrogant toerag,’ she said, cutting across Snape. ‘I don’t need you to tell me that. But Mulciber and Avery’s idea of humour is just evil. Evil, Sev. I don’t understand how you can be friends with them.’
Harry doubted that Snape had even heard her strictures on Mulciber and Avery. The moment she had insulted James Potter, his whole body had relaxed, and as they walked away there was a new spring in Snape’s step…
Snape’s reactions are so strong it’s bodily visible. The boy who will grow to be the most exceptional spy bearing such cold indifference and apathy daily, is in such a torment that it could not be any clearer.
His colour rose again as he said it, unable, it seemed, to hold in his resentment. +
The intensity of his gaze made her blush. ++
Snape’s whole face contorted and he spluttered. +++
The words seemed wrenched from him against his will. +++
Snape’s bitterness and dislike were rendering him incoherent. ++++
The moment she had insulted James Potter, his whole body had relaxed, and as they walked away there was a new spring in Snape’s step… -
Someone calls for help, asks for their emotions to be acknowledged–and instead of empathizing with him, his bullies get the praise.
There’s reason being unpopular makes you an easy target.
