Kelly Clarkson, Title TBD, Date TBD
With a new home at Atlantic Records, the pop star is embracing a fresh sound inspired by R&B and soul music. “I’ve actually always wanted to make this album,” she told EW in Sept. “We don’t need to hear ‘Stronger’ again, or ‘Since U Been Gone.’ It’s time for something else.” Longtime fans shouldn’t worry, though: Clarkson said her next set of songs will take her back to her American Idol days, when she regularly covered the likes of Aretha Franklin and Marvin Gaye. During conversations with her team at Atlantic, Clarkson explained, “I was like, ‘Look, this isn’t different. This is what the people voted for.’” So far, she’s finding inspiration in some unlikely places: One song, which addresses domestic violence, was inspired by the character Celeste from Liane Moriarty’s novel Big Little Lies. Said Clarkson, “It feels like I’m a brand-new artist again.” —N.F., with reporting by Isabella Biedenharn

Three-time Grammy winner Kelly Clarkson is working on her seventh non-holiday studio album due out sometime by mid-year. She’s had a career with a plethora of successes and continues to be one of America’s favorites. She’s widely known for her gigantic anthems and powerful pipes but also has teamed up with a variety of artists both live and on recording. AXS is taking a look at her top 5 collaborations that have been put on record.
5. “Because of You” with Reba McEntire
In 2004, Kelly Clarkson released her blockbuster album Breakaway and on it was a song she attempted to place on her first record with resistance from the label, a song she wrote at 16. It became a No. 1 hit worldwide in 2005 when it was released as a single even though it “didn’t rhyme.” In 2007, Clarkson and McEntire recut the song as a country duet for McEntire’s album Duets. Originally they recorded a track titled “A Lot Like You” but McEntire loved the song and story so much that they scrapped the first track and Clarkson’s introduction to country music was set. The two toured together for two legs in 2008 and performed the song on various award shows.
4. “The Sun Will Rise” with Kara Dioguardi
2011 saw Clarkson release her Grammy winning album Stronger which was her most cohesive to date. She recorded two duets but only one made the cut and appearing on the deluxe edition is the roaring “The Sun Will Rise.” It features songwriter Kara Dioguardi whom Clarkson has worked with in the past on Breakaway tracks and is the only credit outside the band on My December on the song “One Minute” leaving it to be believed it was a leftover. “The Sun Will Rise” is uplifting and once Clarkson comes in at the end, she opens her chest and just belts before the storm calms. Dioguardi has strong vocals as well but not with the power of the “American Idol” winner.
3. “Don’t Rush” featuring Vince Gill
“Don’t Rush” was included as one of three new tracks on the Greatest Hits - Chapter One set and was promoted to country radio. The throwback jam features Vince Gill on guitar and additional vocals and has been a treat to watch during its time. At the 2013 Academy of Country Music Awards, she went solo and received a standing ovation as so often she does. At the 2012 CMA Awards, she performed with Gill and geeked out that she was standing next to the country legend singing with him.
2. “All I Ask” with Josh Groban
Josh Groban worked with Kelly Clarkson on the ABC series “Duets” where Clarkson was a mentor and Groban a host. In 2015, the two paired up for Grobans Stages album, a set with theatrical numbers including “All I Ask” from “Phantom of the Opera.” Clarkson, a theater lover herself, showcased yet another side of her versatile voice hitting the highs and performing like a true pro. One day, Clarkson would like to perform on Broadway.
1. “Don’t You Wanna Stay” with Jason Aldean
Perhaps the biggest collaboration to date in Clarkson’s career is getting together with country star Jason Aldean for his album My Kinda Party in 2010. It earned the two a Grammy nomination for Best Duo/Group Performance at the 2012 Grammy Awards and was a crossover success. It hit No. 1 on Hot Country Songs while reaching No. 3 on Adult Contemporary and No. 9 on Adult Pop Songs (also known as Adult Top 40). Clarkson continued to perform the song on tour in 2012 teaming up with various male singers including the lead singer of The Fray who opened the tour. Aldean used a prerecorded video of Clarkson for his tour. To this day, the song is still heard on AC stations.
