When my mother forgets a word, she is the queen of coming up with new words. Words that would take a third National Treasure movie to fully decipher. I was talking to her yesterday, and she said this: “You know the time for los jibbities is coming up. You must be so excited!” Oh, is it time for los jibbities already? I must have missed it on my calendar. Are we celebrating something? “Of course! We should all be celebrating, shouldn’t we?” OK, so los jibbities is a happy thing. It’s not like something is giving you the heebie-jeebies, which would have been my one and only guess. “Los heebie-jeebies? Now you’re making things up...and this is my show.” You’re right. The time for los jibbities is coming up. Is this a season? “Yes, the season for love. The season for pride.” OK, los jibbities. “Yeah, sound it out.” Los…jibbities. LGBTs! “Sí, mira cuz you’re gay!” “You couldn’t just say pride season? You couldn’t just… *laughs*

One of the things female cats will do, sometimes, is put multiple litters of kittens together to be raised communally. My five foster babies were all brought to the shelter together, not a mom in sight. I'm becoming increasingly convinced that Lollygag and Malcontent are not related to Pinstripe, Flintlock, and Malarkey.

For one, Lolly and Malcontent are about half the size of the other kittens, and noticeably developmentally behind. They also have coat textures that seem to be likely to develop into longer hair, while the other three are definitely shorthairs. You can see the size difference between Malcontent and Malarkey here. It's possible the little ones are just runts, I suppose, but it seems likelier to me that they're unrelated.

It would be nice if Lolly and Malcontent got adopted together, but I don't think it'll be too likely through the shelter. They're a great pair in temperament--Malcontent, ironically, is a very content, calm little guy, and is by far the cuddliest kitten. Lollygag is a little primadonna, bold and chatty, and is such a striking kitten I'd be shocked if she wasn't adopted first. Quiet, drab little Malcontent may have a harder time catching someone's eye.

It's actually really great to adopt kittens in pairs though. They do better with a same-age playmate, they have someone to keep them company when the humans are away, and they learn better claws manners when they have other cats around. And two kittens are not significantly more work than one; in some ways, having two kittens to keep each other entertained can be less work than one bored agent of chaos.

Anyways. If you're in Michigan and looking for a kitten or two, hit me up. They'll all be adoptable when they get big enough to be fixed.

It’s been long enough since I worked at the hideously mismanaged nanotech startup that I’ve started romanticizing it. Like, yes the hydrogen explosion was scary and I’m entirely too familiar with the odor of decaborane, and yes the CEO and CTO got in a fistfight in the conference room, but nothing makes you feel alive like turning chunks of graphite on an ancient manual lathe with inadequate respiratory PPE.
