Lo Scarabeo’s Dream Cards: the 78-card oracle deck of awesome. They are also known as the Dream Inspiration Cards, but that is not to say they’re “inspirational” in the usual oracle card sense. The artwork is inspired by common dream images, and so you get scenes that depict familiar off-the-wall shenanigans like flying, people and objects fused into one another, and of course, random nudity. I particularly like the way people’s legs are often stuck or melded into to the ground in various cards, which I thought was very reminiscent of dreams I’ve had where I just can’t fucking move anywhere. I also love how the landscapes in certain cards are very fluid or are hazy around the edges. It’s quirks like these that demonstrate this is not simply a “dream” deck for the sake of an easy label. The art actually lives up to it’s claim of being oneiric. The cards above are just a few of my personal faves. Like, what the fuck is even going on in Temple. My eyes hurt looking at his crotch. But whatever, I dig it.

As you might imagine, this deck makes for an interesting reading. The LWB, as many have found, isn’t worth consulting, and frankly, even if it was, this is an easy deck to use independently. The art is pretty detailed and open for interpretation. So far I haven’t had a problem reading intuitively. I started off by simply pulling a few cards and letting them tell me a story. In fact the first time I tried it I pulled about 7 or so cards, and they ended up spelling out the plot of my abandoned NaNoWriMo project :S and speaking of which, this would be a great deck for story-building if you’re into that.

Hmm, yeah, so this isn’t really a review, I just want to make some noise about the Dream Cards because they’re pretty under the radar. If you are at all enticed by this intuitive deck, The Book Depository still has them on sale here. Just a slightly picky note: the Dream Cards linked are the ones I bought, but the blue border on my cards are not the same shade as the cards depicted on Book Depository’s site. My borders are actually a pale sky blue (see above). Which I much prefer, haha.
