Here’s a little process video, for anyone who thinks I trace my reference photos:

Yes, I *do* use references, especially for clothing studies. I am a fairly new artist, after all. But I tried to make Shane a little shorter and “schlubbier” than this guy here:

Thank you for the comment! While I did use that reference photo, I did not trace it — that would have defeated the point of the practice I was trying to do.

When doing research for this picture, I spent some time looking for 1920s menswear, and the newsboy cap and vest was still very much in evidence in many of the photos I found.

Once I had chosen that as the outfit type, I looked for a reference I liked and landed on the one you found.

I haven’t seen The Newsies, so I assumed this was a fashion model. I wouldn’t have chosen a famous model or actor if I had known, simply because I would rather people see Shane in the finished image and not Mr. Kelly.

(For what it’s worth, it was a very fun reference to draw from :) The fact that you think I traced it is a little flattering, given that I freehanded it!)

Anyway, the *point* is simply this: all artists use references, especially new ones like me. I am more than happy to share *all* of the references I used for this series, if asked. But ultimately, there is no shame in it, and I am glad it made some people happy.

And with that, I’ve completed the Flower Dance series. I’m so incredibly happy with how these turned out — just look at the fancy gents and lovely ladies of Stardew Valley! :) I gave each of the bachelorettes a signature flower, and pinned it to the suit of the matching bachelor.

These are all wallpaper-sized, and free for personal use. Reblogs welcome, but don’t redistribute or bundle my artwork anywhere else.

Also, feel free to request any sdv character in a style not already shown. I still need more clothing practice and I’m always looking for ideas :)
