I’m gonna write a sequel to this fic. I’ve got like 95% of it planned out in my head. I was going to write it immediately, but I think life got in the way.
But it’s totally got more coming. (I hope.)

Things Steve and Bucky would wear the same/similar: breeches and stockings.
Real men can rock woolen stockings.
Sailors had the clothes they brought and the clothes they made themselves from cloth allotted/sold to them.
Pirates had clothes taken from vessels they conquered and clothes they bought/made for themselves. They had various styles from various cultures they visited.
The clothes that pirates took from other vessels was added to a “slop chest” or “common chest” where all new clothes were put into the chest and then each person was allowed equal amounts of items or cloth and then additional were given out later as the captain or quartermaster allowed.
Also the quartermaster (Sam on Steve’s ship, Rhodey on the one Tony is commanding and Matt on Natasha’s) sometimes auctioned off clothes and cloth after they took things from a conquered vessel. Silk was a common item to be allotted or to buy. Silk breeches were common among pirates who made them for themselves.
AND THIS IS COOL.
They often preferred raw materials to already made clothing because then they could make them to fit properly instead of hoping for the best. And seamen were also masters at sewing because they were constantly having to mend and make sails and mend and make their own clothing. Seamen didn’t need no seamstresses. They could handle it.
So from this we’ve learned that real men wore stockings and sewed their own clothes. For some reason they must’ve been scared to show that in Pirates of the Caribbean.

Ideas for Natasha’s boots!
Because I like the head image I have of when she jumps down and her boots land on Steve’s ship and Peter’s like O.O.

Ideas for Steve.
He’s the one always in the classy blue clothes. He’s dedicated himself and risen in the ranks and his clothes reflect that.
Again, they’re not anything issued by the military, but Steve can afford to look nice these days.
(I think I owe Heath Ledger in The Patriot for why I think men dressed this way are attractive.)

Do you know how hard it is to find female pirates that aren’t doing the sexy, stripper pirate look?
Natasha is sexy without taking 87% of her clothes off.
Okay. So our very own Anne Bonny, young and red-headed, and dangerous as fuck. But probably more badass than Bonny because she’s got her own ship and Anne went everywhere with her lover, Calico Jack.
Natasha don’t need no man. She only got Clint cause she thinks he’s kind of cute and entertaining. She could easily use Clint for target practice with her shiny guns and knives and he’d probably thank her because boy is GONE for her, but she’s not actually that mean.
She’s menacing, but she’s not mean. There’s a big difference.
She is entertained by Clint. I wouldn’t say she’s in love with him, but she’s enjoying him right now. She generally cares about her crew and she sees Bucky as someone very important in her life who helped to get her to where she is. She has nothing but respect for him and wants the best for him.
I’m pretty sure Bucky is the ONLY person she would feel that way about.
I imagine Natasha’s clothes to be mostly dark (I mean, it’s her canon costume to be mostly black) with touches of color (probably greys and reds). Her weapons are silver or black.
And while the hair all down looks cool, it’s probably rare. I includedthat last photo as a reminder that her hair will be back and braided in Avengers4 and that makes the most sense for her as a pirate privateer too.
(Make no mistake: Natasha is a pirate in all but name ...which Steve will discover.)
I also love Natasha very much.

If there is one thing I have learned over the course of this reading/writing/researching, its that I HATE stock photos of pirates.
However, these are pretty much the only photos I can find (that aren’t Jack Sparrow) of someone wearing a headscarf under a tricorn which I think really works for Sam and maybe Natasha. Research says this wasn’t uncommon. It was practical.

I’d like to take a moment to thank Aidan Turner and the costume designer(s) of Poldark for showing a tricorn being worn beautifully by a beautiful person.
So here’s what I’ve pretty much always got Steve in in my mind.
And yeah, they weren’t really uniform. As far as I can find, no militaries outfitted their navies with uniforms until the late 1700s/early 1800s. But often the high ranking officers would have these kinds of things just because they could and because it distinguished them from their crews.
(Man, I’ve gotta watch Poldark.)

Okay. So these are what we think of as pirate headwear. It’s really inaccurate for the time I’m writing (it was more of a 19th century thing), but I’ve been imagining Bucky in one anyway because it’s pretty attractive, let’s be honest.
However, they never really had pirate skull and crossbones or anything on them. That’s a work of fiction. Same as decorated eyepatches.
They just wore solid or “boring” patterns. And unlike thenmonkouth caps which were fashionable and useful, wearing a bandana was more about practicality and convention than fashion. Gotta keep your hair out of your eyes and keep sweat or water from running into your eyes as much as possible.

Another comment on the knit caps:
They were considered very fashionable and seamen wore them pridefully and paid good money for them. They usually had an assortment of them (though red was apparently the most popular color).
There’s evidence that some ships paid to have hundreds of these caps made so they would have plenty on board. (There is a cute mental image imagining Natasha in one.)

And feel free to imagine Bucky in one, but you don’t have to.
However, definitely imagine Sam, Tony, Frank, and some of the others in these.
Sailors and pirates alike would have worn knit caps (“monmouth caps”) both to keep them warm when they got wet and to keep them from sunburn when on the decks. Also, to help prevent lice. It was acceptable for sailors wearing tricorns to put them over their knit caps, but tricorns weren’t widespread among the crew, just the captain and maybe quartermaster, if anyone.
I’ll also post pictures of some bandanas in case you’d rather imagine Bucky wearing one of those.

There’s pretty much no way Bucky wouldn’t have gold hoop earrings.
Pirates of the time believed the gold piercings had healing factors so it would prevent them for getting seasick or from getting bad eyesight or even common illnesses like lime disease.
There were a lot of superstitions people believed then.
This is one of my favorites personally.

I’m not huge into using PotC for inspiration, but LOOK at how nice Orlando is dressed in these shots.
Again, a Bucky look.

A lot of sailors and pirates wore these.
The idea was that if anyone fell overboard, the stripes would make them easy to spot and work like a flashy neon sign saying, “Here he is! See him??”
This was so practical that the French navy even adopted it as part of their official uniform in the mid-1800s.
Before that, it was mostly a commoner practice so imagine it being used more by pirates and privateers. A lot of pirates wore it underneath their clothing unless there was a storm/strong winds or unless they were going to working along the rigging/ratlines and were at a serious danger of falling overboard.

When both of Bucky’s arms are still pretty much useless, he doesn’t bother with more than some trousers and boots and a shirt like this.
He may or may not wear the sash around his waist? Seems like a lot of work for a man who can to do minimal work. Idk.

Bucky clothes when fully dressed.
The sash and belt is important.
The sash across his waist would hold his swords and gun.
I also imagine that’s what Bruce used to make him a sling. Idk whose it was. Maybe Bruce took it off one of the dead guys. Isn’t that how they operated then?
“You won’t be needing this anymore. Let me have it.”
Anyway. The important parts are the white(ish) shirt underneath (all Bucky bothers with when his arm is in the sling and his other arm still belted up to let it heal.). And the vest/waistcoat thing which Bucky puts on when Nat helps or when he gets one arm free of the belt and can start to maneuver better.
