I was admitted to The Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital on July 15, 2010, at 5:33 PM, to the BIA hall.
I had turned 19 that March, just a few months before the admission.
When Patients Struggled, They Were Sedated
One of the most disturbing patterns I witnessed was how they handled patients who were emotional or challenging. Instead of engaging them therapeutically, the apparent solution was heavy sedation. I watched fellow patients go from expressive and lively to dazed, barely able to stay upright. You’d see a flicker of their old personality when the medication started to wear off—only for them to be drugged again the next day. It was heartbreaking.
Eating Wasn't Nourishment—It Was Compliance
Meals weren’t about listening to your body or reconnecting with food. They were about following rules. Every item on the plate had to be finished—no exceptions. I remember being praised and given small “rewards” for eating heavy, high-calorie foods like butter or massive portions of paella. It felt infantilizing and counterproductive.
The Needles, the Blood, and the Silence
Blood was drawn from us daily—sometimes twice a day. There was no clear explanation beyond “checking electrolytes,” but it felt excessive. By the time I left, both my arms were covered in bruises—blue and purple from the repeated punctures. I remember telling the nurses that it hurt. That I didn’t have any veins left. Their responses were dismissive, if they responded at all.
I watched girls completely zoned out at the table, their faces barely staying upright during breakfast. It was like living in a place where no one was fully awake—not the patients, and certainly not the staff.
The Only Glimpse of the Outside World
There was one morning I heard BoB’s “Airplanes” playing faintly on the radio during breakfast. It was the only real-world sound I remember hearing that summer. Sometimes, the morning news would show photos of Bella or Gigi Hadid traveling the world, modeling. I remember thinking how far away freedom looked, like watching life through glass from the inside of a locked building.
