Challenge Accepted. ⁣ “I cannot think of a better time in our nation’s history for the brave names of Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi to be recognized. The courage heard in their voices mirrors some of history’s greatest giants, with sharp echoes of Rosa Parks. Black Lives Matter is working to heal our country’s age-long sickness. For when one is sick, so too are we all sick. Only when all is healed might we all one day be well.” — Uzo Aduba, for Glamour Magazine⁣ ⁣ You may have noticed that this is not a picture of me lol… 🤯
White women get their faces plastered on EVERYTHING for doing the least. ⁣ I said what I said.⁣ ⁣ No shade to those posting; you are beautiful, and I hope you feel that in every possible way.⁣ ⁣ But in this wild world of social media, a black woman is sooo much more likely to be reported, removed, banned, or left out of the algorithm.⁣ ⁣ So I am choosing to take this moment to lift up these women and the multitudes of black women that have fought for generations so that we may all be free.
Two other activists who I want to highlight are Tamika Mallory, co-founder of Until Freedom, and Charlene Carruthers, author and co-creator of BYP100.
Follow them. Support them. Listen to them. ⤵️⤵️⤵️

White supremecy is uplifted and strengthened in the classroom.
It starts with these tiny microagressions, these stories we tell ourselves and our students from jump. ⁣It starts with Columbus and the tired First Thanksgiving trope. It continues with a "revolution" for freedom that really only included affluent white men. It compounds Everytime you talk about "founding fathers" and "liberty for all" when you teach Thomas Jefferson and the Constitution.
If you teach history and government but aren't calling these protestors revolutionaries and like Dr. King, you are part of the problem. If you teach literature and aren't talking about these brave souls the way you talk about Anne Frank, you are part of the problem.⁣
As educators, and especially as white educators, we have a responsibility to uproot the lies we've been fed and change the conversation. ⁣Your silence is DEADLY.
As students, and especially as white students, we have a responsibility to question EVERYTHING we are taught. ⁣Your silence is DEADLY.
History is a narrative written by the victor, a story and nothing more. Who will you be when this narrative is written?⁣

I have been married to this amazing human for 6 years today. ⁣🖤 [Shout out to everyone who voted for marriage equality! Before this way-too-hard-to-get piece of government paper was signed, we couldn’t both legally be on our daughter’s birth certificate.] Every year I ask myself how I got so lucky, and every year after that, life somehow gets even better with you.⁣ It isn’t always easy or even fun, but I’m grateful the universe gave us this opportunity. Thank you for this beautiful life we have built together. An eternity with you would still not be long enough to explain the depth with which I love you.⁣
