Team Edward or Team Jacob?! (they don't care, it's free advertising!)
Click Chicks! "Where the hell you been Loca?!" Picture this, it's late afternoon on a Sunday in the fall. The leaves are falling gently, the air is crisp, and Starbucks just re-released the pumpkin spice line of their autumnal drinks. So naturally, you decide it's time to start your annual "Twilight" movie marathon. You then start tweeting, posting on your story, and making Tik Toks as an outlet for your nostalgia driven excitement...well you and the thousands of others who enjoy this global francise. Many share their opinion on which supernatural boy is better for Bella, but more importantly (at least for the production company), they argue why their opinion is correct and your opposing opinion is the wrong hill to die on. The online chatter created with this energetic debate back and forth creates conversation. Conversation is what keeps a topic, and an IP in this case, relevant and thriving. Despite the first Twilight movie coming out in late 2008, it remains relevant by these global discussions. This will then cause fans of the franchise or people who were too young at the time that are now discovering it, to go back and watch these films. A movie franchise that has not been advertised by the production company for over 10 years, thrives on the free advertising that social media users like you and me create daily with our digital engagement. I suspect that we as a society will start to see a continued and increase in the trend of TV shows & movie series being funded that support that "Twilight" formula of having your main character being torn between two love interests, creating a "Team BLANK" vs. "Team BLANK" because it is proven to create social discourse that creates free buzz for the project, therefore saving the company money and resources. While Twilight marks the start of the popularization of this formatting, other massive productions have proved this thesis over the last few years. For example, the Hunger Games franchise (Team Gale vs. Peeta), and more recently with new seasons still actively dropping, "The Summer I Turned Pretty" Amazon Prime show (Team Jeremiah vs. Conrad). Overall, I believe that this is harmless enough since us viewers who post do it out of pure join and wanting to connect with other fans of the franchises. I would just caution to look at an example such as this and just consider when you post about a product of any kind next: what are you supporting? how do they directly benefit? do I want to be involved/intertwined in it? Some food for thought! Love ya click chicks! And don't forget to click when you see this chick! xoxo - Maia
