im probably just overthinking this bc if u cant already tell i like cliff a whole lot as a character, but i really cant help but interpret that scene as someone looking out for someone he thinks might be getting abused/taken advantage of.
cliff as a character is so laid back. he’s fine with anything and everything, basically unshakable. he just seems to be someone who’s already immune to verbal attacks, but you honestly dont just gain that kind of desensitization overnight. he had to have gotten used to it, and the fact that we get to see a flashback of his wife talking to him like that doesnt sit well with me at all. his silence could be interpreted as many things in that flashback, maybe quiet anger that’s been building up and finally spilling over, or it could be resignation. and im leaning more towards resignation bc im biased and maybe projecting, but i feel like it’s just more in line with his character to just have been resigned, and i’m an absolute slut for somewhat consistent characterization.
after my 939494th rewatch of this damn movie, cliff asking george what happens when squeaky gets pissed off just hit me. i mean it’s already obvious what cliff thinks the hippies are doing to george but the fact that he asked specifically about squeaky, george’s...i guess partner, it made me think about the flashback of him and his wife on the boat.
“what happens when she gets pissed off, george?”
cliff is sitting quietly, opening a new can of beer as his wife berates him and purposely provokes him for them to get into a fight. she tells him her sisters were right, he’s a loser. and he sits there quietly, almost as if resigned.
“what happens when she gets pissed off?”
#if tarantino releases that 4 hr cut and he really turned out to have killed his wife i guess i’ll walk around town with my clown shoes on#but for now tarantino left it up for interpretation so.#also i will never feel bad for a character who verbally abused another character. ever#and no one really knows what their marriage was like but based off of what was shown. idgaf what happened to her lmao#i will never root for someone who’s verbally abusive#text

im just saying. there’s no way the guy who
a.) was constantly there for his best friend, from the small things like driving him around and hyping him up before his shoot to literally defending his home from murderers
b.) insisted on visiting and talking to a guy he barely knew just to make sure he was really okay and being patient with him all the way no matter how hard it was to communicate with him
c.) (barest of the bare fuckin minimum but in pussycat’s words, no one has asked her how old she really was in a long time) didnt take advantage of a young girl just bc she seemed game
killed his wife. aint no way. even then do NOT prosecute him. that is ON HER he caught HER slipping
#cliff booth#obvs im kidding with the last part but. theres just no way djjfkdkdksk#ouatih#once upon a time in hollywood#text
