the difference between ayo disabling bucky's arm and sentry doing a similar thing, is that ayo was a friend. she was someone bucky trusted at his most vulnerable only to find out that his new prosthetic was rigged all along and he never knew about it until that point. another modification done to his body without consent. what sentry did, while cruel, was more "acceptable" because he was the villain in that moment. bucky didn't know him in any way, he was just a dangerous super powered individual created by someone even more dangerous and used as a weapon against the team. from a writing standpoint, neither situations should have happened imo because having someone's disability aid taken from them as 'punishment' is disgusting. but there is a valid reason both moments got different reactions from people

So back when I used to get night terrors really badly, I left lights on too. Not saying it's the same, but my reasons were cuz if I woke up in full darkness, I'd panic harder because the dreams were so real and intense, I'd never really know I was awake right away if I couldn't immediately see my surroundings and ground myself - so I'd still be on high alert and expecting bad stuff.

So it could be a preparation for nightmares type of thing. Like he just accepts that's something that's going to happen, and he knows that at the very least, he can immediately come back to reality if he can see his crappy little apartment right away.
