Ace x Family: Mission P-1 Part 2-5

(28 Mar: oh shit I just looked in my drafts folder and realised I never actually published this, I think because my posting schedule got interrupted by a storm snapping the power pole in my backyard so I had no power for a week. Coincidentally I had no power for a week last week because a blizzard ripped down the power lines and there was literally a still energized power line laying in my backyard for more than 1 day before the power company came by and said ‘oh that still has a current, maybe don’t go in your backyard for now, we’ll try to get someone to shut that down so you don’t die, but we won’t be back to actually fix it for a few days’ so it’s really been a fun 7months for basic utilities around here. I remain unsure about whether I want to keep going with this one all the way through to the unraveling of the culprit because I’m still a little bored with just drawing the court back and forth, and I’m back to wanting to jump to the next story arc I had in mind cause it has more action and more of the characters, but I’ve also been buried at work so who knows when I get to any of it. Ugh, I wish I could just be an overnight millionaire so I could just spend all day thinking about blorbos. )

Yeah, my Gumshoe is so inconsistent, he keeps changing styles. (I mean more than my obvious shifts between AA style and SxF style) I do feel like I've figured out his hair though... maybe.

That little interlude of Phoenix thinking about how Uncle Kazuma's great at getting people to talk, is one of my favourite moments in the arc thus far. It's that and back when Larry switches sides because he's 'not a kangaroo'

Anyway. I've been thinking about pausing on this particular storyline because my brain is luring me to work on one that was to come somewhere after this that would involve way more characters, both the adults and the kids and the high school kids, and a lot more action. In that one because of the success of this class trial, Judge Udgey gets several of the kids to be added as 'assistants' to the annual Themis Senior Mock Investigation and Trial, so they'd be tagging along with Shi Long, Mia, Dhurke, Datz and all while they investigate a fake crime staged at the hospital where Barok works. The event will not go smoothly because of the usual spy and assassination threats. So you can see why I'm tempted. Especially now that the Investigations 2 news has broken and I'm feeling extra Shi Longy. I suppose it will depend on how much of that plot and script I puke out in a fever dream.

Did I maybe get bored with talking heads and decide to make 3 long ass objection monologs into 3 separate 2 page spreads where the Von Karma siblings imagine legal arguments as increasingly over-the-top action fight sequences? Maybe. Did I regret that decision halfway through, also maybe. Did I decide it was a good idea after all once I realised the street fighter/anime fireball type action was a perfect fit for Logic Chess? Ace x Family: Mission P1- Part 2-2

So, I know it's been a super long time since I posted any updates to this work, but surprise I have actually been working on it in that time period so there are about to be several reasonably spaced drops of pages. When last we paused the trial was well underway and Phoenix had just pointed out that he has zero money on him, which seems odd for someone supposedly caught red-handed in the act of stealing.... (as usual reminder: These follow manga format with right to left reading direction rather than American comic book form) (also: for anyone who needs screenreader and is annoyed with my lack of alt-text here. (I've finished up through what I had initially wrote of the script because oops I thought I wrote the whole thing, but apparently didn't fortunately I at least left myself a detailed and time-stamped timeline of the actual rube-goldberg of crime so I can attempt to finish the whole plotline.) I have realised that it was maybe not the best decision for me to have created this as a big sprawling case-fic that's trapped in the trial part, where it's almost entirely back and forth between Edgeworth and Fanziska because it's not really conducive some of what my goals were in doing this which was working on page and panel layouts and storyboards that go beyond talking heads into more backgrounds. Mostly it's just long and I have other plot ideas with other characters in this AU that feel more exciting begging me to just work on them instead. (Also it's funny that by now the manga has progressed to places where my whole AU has diverged from it as well.)

I’ve hit the edge of the script I had written for the class trial arc (yes, this does mean there will soon be new sets of pages and I haven’t actually abandoned Ace x Family) that means I either have to figure out the rest of the story or give in to the temptation to pause on that arc and start a different one (which is kind of tempting because that one wouldn’t just be mostly confined to Miles and Franziska yelling objection at each other) so I’ve been trying to figure out some of those other characters that I hadn’t done yet and their colour palettes since the other thing I’m thinking of will include Shi Long so I need to flesh out the other Highschool students. I think it’s funny that Eve Belduke canonically has basically Anya’s weird little horn ears, but that sort of seemed like it would be weird so I’ve turned them into a giant ass bow.

Another instalment of ‘random orphaned thoughts I found scribbled in one of my old notebooks’ :

This would so happen and I would die laughing because it will totally end in Saeko feeling like she can wear the shirt Ichi made for her because she can just play it off like “well everyone else was being cringe too, so it was only right and it’s not like I’m letting my protective shell down and being soft.”

Also Seonhee will fight Majima for an extra of his and it will be half serious but then Majima will realise how much fun they could have annoy/embarrassing Kiryu if he gave her one and they both pretended they’d formed an otaku fan club for him.

I am happy to announce that yes, a general healthcare plan will be made available to members of the Tojo Clan. Rates will be decided on a family-to-family basis, where members of families approved for the program will be able to apply for coverage of any work-related injuries as well as several other conditions. There are, however, some notable exceptions.

Tojocare does not cover any Fourth Chairman-related injuries, with rare exception to some pre-existing conditions. The best policy here is prevention. Know the KIRYU system.

If you have managed to somehow engage the Fourth Chairman in combat post his retirement, then the responsibility is entirely your own.

Don’t read under the cut if you haven’t gotten to at least chapter 13 (and moreso for the hidden portion the finale chapter) of Infinite Wealth, I am venting about some things which are spoilers for character interactions at the very least. you have now been warned.

So, I haven’t finished the game yet (should soon I’m finishing up stuff with the Yokohama crew before heading for the obligatory siege of the Millennium Tower ) but I’m still really angry at Kiryu for how he left things with 3Jima. Like really, really angry.

(And to be fair, I was really enjoying Kiryu this game until the bucket list where the further Date went to try to help, the more I too wanted to slug Kiryu (even though, as usual, I 💯 understand exactly what Kiryu was thinking whenever he made a choice or said a thing that made me scream at the screen. This section of the game did really hammer home to me the extent to which I see parallels in my own tragic backstory and how that makes me identify with Kiryu and thus why I get so mad at his decisions in every game. I mean, I kind of knew this before, but he’s more introspective in the bucket list book and hearing my own thoughts on certain events in my life mirrored back has been a little ‘oh…’ ) so this isn’t the only thing that’s frustrated me to watch (but damn was Akiyama’s punch so satisfying. He was all of us in that moment.)

(Do not unhide the next part if you didn’t finish the Date part of the the bucket list and aren’t up to the finale my rant is more specific here about events)

How can the Daidoji possibly care that much anymore, at that point chapter-wise the cat is well and truly out of the bag thanks to Tatara channel (so also how does he think that like Haruka et al don’t know he’s alive still? There was video of him on the fucking national news while reporters, who clearly aren’t good at reporting or critical thinking, spout a bunch of completely wrong accusations about his motives.!<

I’m sure I’ll vent further on this but it’s been stewing in me since the chapter, because usually even though we barely get any Majima the little we do get makes me happy, but that was just upsetting on all fronts. The funny thing is, it’s the one and only time in the nearly 20 years since Kiryu first got out of prison that Majima has ever said ‘no’ (though it’s mostly Daigo who says no)

I was searching through the mess of randomness that is the notes app on my work computer and came across the introductory backstory I'd written for the time when the 'culture club' thought it would be fun to have a conference call where everyone was dressed up like superheroes (which, of course, was going to overcome my natural cynicism of workplace 'fun' activities, because any day I can dress with the abandon of a 5-year old with free reign of a Children's Museum's costume shop knowing that I have a free-pass from ridicule, is a day I'm going to take advantage of.)

In hopes of luring in participation from people who didn't have a random collection of Batman and/or Marvel masks lying around their homes (which a surprising number of coworkers did actually happen to just have at the ready in case Disney or Commissioner Gordan needed them to step in.) or at least to have something to do their judging event on that wasn't throwing a dart at a board of a bunch of dudes in the same batman mask to decide on 'best costume', they created a category for 'create your own superhero or super-villain' which allowed you to dress up as your creation and wear whatever (including your normal clothes claiming you were in your Kentian mild-mannered disguise ) and be able to snag honours so long as you prepared a backstory and description of the character.

This is my true wheelhouse. I never seem to have the motivation or attention span to write actual prose anymore, but I can lose hours in spinning an elaborate backstory like nothing else because it's all ideas and fragments. In middle school and high school whenever I would get stuck cast in those 'impatient woman in elevator' roles so the department head could make sure the acting part wouldn't get in the way of making me do double duty as props and assistant director; I used to create enormous backstories for that character and how they invisibly wove through the plot of the show to reach those 30 seconds of overlap with the lead characters. (This is probably why Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is one of my favourite plays; because firstly, it's fucking brilliant, and secondly it felt like it vindicated the maybe over-the-top thing I just always did on my own, that most of my drama club friends sort of rolled their eyes at.)

This is also all just a long-winded intro to where I just wanted to post the little character intro monologue I'd written to justify wanting to wear an eye patch, a ww2 nurse's cape, cyberpunkish mid-calf leather boots, and a random blonde wig for the day. (And I am kind of proud that I got that far lore-wise in maybe 2 hours tops, though I do admit that I completely leaned on a Tumblr post (which I should find so I can credit whoever is responsible for that writing prompt) about what if everyone has superpowers, but they had to be unique so yours is probably not very useful, as a total jumping off point.) It's also probably because it's been a while since I wrote it and seeing it again I found myself kind of like, 'oh that could actually be interesting to actually do something with.' and usually when I find old stuff like that I'm just like 'why did the me of whenever I coughed this out think this was good?'

So anyway the character (and of course, I chose not super-hero, not super-villain, but secret third thing, super-cynical-and-super-tired-of-everyone's-bullshit-mercenary+powers) monologue which can now only be disappointing because the lead in is too long.

This world is one where, sure everyone has a super power, but since only one person at a time can have any given power, most people have lame ones and society is stratified by the perceived value of the one you ‘inherit’.

I used to be one of the ‘good guys’, using my ability to read any enemy’s next planned move by merely looking at them to advise troops in the war on ‘evil’.

But then, someone tried to kill me with a cursed dagger for my powers. I lost an eye, and they got to ‘inherit’ my ability, which was obviously not that reliable in hindsight given the whole assassination thing I walked right into. But, I gained the ability to pass freely between the underworld and our world and to see with a glance the most efficient way to destroy a foe. 

As for the ‘good guys’? Well, my would-be assassin is their golden boy. And I’m not interested in swearing up with that bunch of overcompensating ego-maniacs in the villain league. So I guess that makes me… a free agent, out to put an end to them both.
