NYT has been discouraging reporters from sharing photos of luigi mangione - not due to concerns for his safety but to dissuade sympathy - and refuses to post his alleged manifesto in full. and today, they published an opinion by bret stephens about how brian thompson is the "real working class hero" of this story.

reddit deleted luigi's account, which was completely innocuous and consisted mostly of him giving out advice in health subreddits. they're also deleting any post that includes his alleged manifesto and banning users for sharing it.

luigi yelled that this was "an insult to the intelligence of the american people" while he was being dragged by police and news pundits are framing it as a deranged and violent outburst. news media are picking apart details of his life to paint him as a cold-blooded and mentally ill individual. even something as innocent as playing "among us" with friends is being framed as some insidious look into an assassin's disturbed psyche, ffs.

news media are also capitalizing on luigi's supposed "bizarre and impossible to understand" politics as an obvious way to paint him as a scary individual when the guy is... a centrist, at most. whose views are similar to those of your average college-educated white guy.

multiple news media also keep harping on about how luigi comes from a rich family. an obvious attempt to break the class solidarity that's been formed around this case by continuously trying to tell us "oh he's not like you guys" while ignoring the now pretty well-documented accounts of his multiple health struggles throughout the years.

and all this, and he hasn't even been found guilty of the crime he's allegedly committed. luigi is, as of right now, still innocent until proven guilty. and the news are trying to tear him apart because they obviously fear the symbol he's becoming for low and middle class america.

How to recover fic deleted from AO3 that’s NOT on the Wayback machine

Sharing this because I just found out about this and it blew my mind.

The short version of it is: The Wayback Machine is not the only backup/archive of AO3 content out there. It’s just the most user-friendly and immediately browsable.

THIS database on Archive.org contains most AO3 fics as text files, including plenty that are not Waybacked: https://archive.org/details/AO3_final_location

What you’ll need: A browser for .sqlite3 files such as DB Browser for SQLite, an archive manager (e.g. WinRar or 7zip), good internet download speeds, and potentially a LOT of free GBs in storage space.

Not needed but heavily recommended: A download manager such as HTTP Downloader (so you don’t lose the entire download the second your internet stutters).

1. Click here to get to the archive’s files. It’s going to look something like this:

ao3_current.sqlite3 and ao3_old_files.sqlite3 are metadata files. The .zip files contain fic, most of them in simple .txt format. The metadata files tell you which fic is in which zip.

The “current” metadata file is recent backups. The “old” metadata file seems to be fics archived until 2020ish.

2. First, download either ao3_current.sqlite3 or ao3_old_files.sqlite3. Now launch DB Browser for SQlite, then File > Open Database Read-Only > open the sqlite3 file. Now click on the Browse Data tab.

3. It’s going to look like this.

4. The “Filter in any column” field can be used for keyword searches in, well, any column of this table. Be warned, it takes a while to update, give it time, it’s indexing.

5. Here I searched for all fic which gets a hit for the “Avengers” keyword (usually fandom). You can also search for a specific title, author, description, etc.

Let’s try to locate the first fic on the list. Click on the field on the left - row 1, column 1.

On the right you’ll see the full content of that cell. The most important thing here is the start - ao3_01. This means that the fic is located in ao3_old_files_part01.zip.

6. Download ao3_old_files_part01.zip and open it with your archive manager. It’s 5.5 GB. This will take some time.

7. There are multiple ways to find the fic within the zip file. Probably the easiest way is to use your archive manager’s search/find function to locate the fic by keyword - author is a good bet here, or title if it’s unique enough - and extract that. This way you don’t have to extract the entire archive. Be sure to add a wildcard operator (*) on either side of the keyword.

8. Extract the file and you’re done. Note: It will probably be in .txt format, and might be in one giant block of text. Just select-all and paste it to a proper word processor to restore the paragraph formatting.

+ I suppose if you’ve got like a free TB of space you could just skip the metadata step and download all the zip files and unzip them and use a command line search tool for keywords, too. This will work with keywords like title, author and fandom that are part of the file title. The metadata file just contains additional info, like character fields, description, etc.

This isn’t a perfect remedy, there are still fics that got deleted before they could get archived here. But it seems more complete than the stuff on the Wayback Machine on average.

I do this for pretty much any fandom I'm interested in, but here's a list of fics I've been enjoying and checking constantly for updates SO FAR

First off, a Kaycee isekai fic! Basically, she's transported into the world of Inscryption and doesn't know how to get out.

The fic is inspired by longelk's Kaycee and I love how they wrote her. Also, Kaycee totally doesn't have Stockholm Syndrome, noo- But seriously, the way they interact is so wholesome. I love Kc's wittiness and Leshy's intimidating nature. They recently brought P03 to the table and an interesting yet not so interesting thing happened. The fic has a graphic scene involving teeth being ripped out so watch out for that

Chapt 4/?

This fic is an AU that stems from some characters doing/not doing certain things that they did in canon. The fic focuses on the Scrybes and how they adapt/react to an abnormal situation. The latest chapters had me soo hyped, all I can say is Grimora got an interesting arc written out that made her into a compelling character imo

Chap 15/?

Another Kaycee isekai fic because just like Pokemon's submas, I am enamored with a character that has 5 minutes of screentime- actually, she doesn't even HAVE any screentime apart from that one image of her

Even if they claim it's not up to date with recent plot discoveries in Kaycee's mod, I think it's still a really fun read. Kaycee is written to be witty and slightly deranged (she do be a lil quirky) and I had a chuckle at her actions.

Now that I’ve gotten your attention, I’d like to tell you about a lovely Gazan family that needs help! Maram, Ahmed, and their children Habiba (age 4), Kareem (age 2), and Muhammed (age 1) lost everything, from their house to their dignity to the entire life they used to have. They are now looking to evacuate.

Baby Muhammad and his mother Maram are suffering from malnutrition, and Maram has potentially lethal liver disease as well. She and her family have been displaced 11 times, but are currently staying in an actively dangerous area so as to avoid spreading illness to others in highly crowded areas.

In short, they need to evacuate asap. They're currently at €30,243 of their goal of €40,000 - let's get them all the way to the goal as fast as possible!

Played a game called ten candles with my friends for the spooky month, and it’s my first time being the game master. Holy shit, this is so fun.

First off, I got to scare the shit out of the players with some flying death being, and a literal point of blackness that plays music. There’s also a cult festering at the shelter they’re staying at and the wife of one of the players is leading the cult.

This is so fun, and we’re gunna continue it next next week.

Ok so, 5 dice. The dealer rolls the dice for the first person. The first person can choose to pick any dice they wanna keep, and can reroll up to 3 dice. They do this again, and a final third time before concluding their hand, what ever they had is written down. Then the second guy goes. You keep going until the last guy goes and who ever has the highest hand wins.

Betting is a single round of no dice rolling, and only betting until everyone is fine with the bet or bowed out, then the dice rolling happens. Who ever wins takes the whole pot.
