26 outdoor farmers markets in Chicago parks and plazas
Fresh flowers, summer tomatoes, bunches of kale, warm pastries, small batch nut butters—it’s all part of the bounty at Chicago farmers markets. The weekly markets bring in farmers, artisans, and local producers from all over the state. The best part is that grocery shopping can take place outside, from the Southport Low-Line to Logan Square and Daley Plaza.
Even if you’re not there to run errands, lots of markets host free yoga classes and bring in local musicians. Grab a cold brew and a donut while you spend a few hours in the park or checking out new vendors.
Looking for more things to do in warmer weather? See our city guide and 26 things to do with kids.

Spring Training Miscellany: Javy Arrives, Adbert Runs, Joe Coaches, More
It’s been a bit of a heavy day, what with Addison Russell facing the media for the first time since he was suspended under the domestic violence policy. Let’s set that aside for now, and get into some of the fun stuff from around Cubs camp today …
Fun like Javy Baez arriving and heating up the room:
A little lefty batting, too, which is actually not unusual for Baez:
Baez can catch and throw with both hands, so it’s not a surprise that he can also swat some dingers lefty if he wants:
New reliever Brad Brach is digging the rotation in front of him:
Although he’s been set back by a couple weeks, so far, Adbert Alzolay has not indicated that his side issue is anything that will disrupt his normal preparation for the season:
For much more on what lies ahead for Alzolay, one of the Cubs’ top pitching prospects, Bryan got into it this week.
Joe Maddon, coaching the coaches:
That’s some intense focus right there:
A couple Rowdy Boys gettin’ ready to get rowdy:

2019 Cubs Heroes and Goats: Game 36
It’s probably not the most shocking event that will happen in a Cubs game this year. The Brewers have been playing extremely well and had six straight wins coming in. The Cubs had won 10 of 11, but they didn’t exactly look like world beaters against the Marlins, even while winning three of four.
It’s really hard to be dominant day in and day out. You try to have 25 guys who have the ability to get hot and provide a lot of value so that you don’t have to rely too heavily on any one player or any one group of players. The Cubs have done a good job of that, but the Brewers pitching was fantastic on Friday.
The Cubs did manage one pretty good scoring chance in the seventh, but despite two singles and a double, managed to not score. That’s a particularly difficult feat, but a double play between the second and third hits in the inning.
Meanwhile, the Brewers offense just kept tacking on. They end up making a pitcher’s duel into a rout in the process. That also allowed them to avoid using Josh Hader on Friday. Kyle Ryan was victimized for two more runs while only recording one out. Unless the Cubs just don’t believe Xavier Cedeno has anything left to contribute, I have to imagine Ryan will find himself back in Iowa shortly. Certainly, most of us think Ryan can contribute at the major league level, but it just isn’t working right now. He’s now been charged with 11 hits, six walks and seven runs in just 13 innings of work.
Of course Allen Webster followed him in this one and did even worse. He allowed three hits, three walks and two runs in 1⅔ innings of work in what became garbage time. He’s now allowed 14 hits, five walks and seven runs in just 11 innings of work. Unlike Ryan, Webster doesn’t have options remaining, so if the Cubs choose to let him go, there is a risk of losing him.
The Cubs were certainly not very sharp, but this game was quite a bit closer than the final score would indicate. Fortunately, they all count as just one win or just one loss, regardless of how lopsided they end up being.
With that, we turn our attention to yesterday’s game as we look at what WPA had to say about Heroes and Goats. As always the Heroes and Goats are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added — here’s a good explanation of how WPA works) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. Also note, for the purposes of Heroes and Goats, we ignore the results of pitchers while they are batting and hitters while they are pitching. With that, we get to the results.
Game 36, May 10: Cubs 0, Brewers 7 (22-14)
THREE HEROES:
Superhero: Addison Russell (.059). Addison had a double and a walk in four plate appearances. This is Russell’s first appearance in Heroes and Goats in 2019.
Hero/Sidekick: Albert Almora Jr. and David Bote (.047). Some unusual names topping the list today as the Cubs big bats were held in check. Albert had a double in four at bats. David had two singles and a walk in four plate appearances.
THREE GOATS:
Billy Goat: Jason Heyward (-.222). Heyward was hitless in four plate appearances. Included was a double play he hit into before the game as out of reach. It was only 3-0 and the Cubs had runners on first and second when he was doubled up (and it retired the two lead runners). (-.160)
Goat: Anthony Rizzo (-.117). Anthony did have one walk in four plate appearances. He grounded out with Almora on second with one out in the sixth (-.054) and flew out with two outs and a runner on first in the third (-.055).
Kid: Javier Baez (-.085). Javy had a single and two strike outs in four plate appearances. But, he did get caught stealing to snuff a potential rally in the second inning.
WPA Play of the Game: With Friday’s game largely being death by a thousand paper cuts, the biggest WPA event of the game was Jason Heyward’s double play in the bottom of the seventh. (160)
*Cubs Play of the Game: Albert Almora’s sixth inning double leading off the inning. (.110)
Cumulative Standings Top/Bottom 3:
Willson Contreras 9
Jon Lester/Jose Quintana 7
David Bote -8
Carl Edwards Jr. -9
Albert Almora Jr. -11
Up Next: The two teams will meet again on Saturday with the Cubs looking to reverse the result from Friday’s game. The Brewers will be looking for an eighth straight win and sole possession of first place. There’s a ton of baseball still be played, but sports are always just a little bit more fun when you are in first place.
The Cubs will turn to Cole Hamels to start this one. Cole is 3-0 with a 3.38 ERA in 42⅔ innings of work on the season. Cole is coming off of a no-decision against the Marlins early on this homestand. He threw six innings in that one and allowed five hits, two walks and three runs while striking out seven. Cole started the Cubs one win in Milwaukee earlier this year. In that one, Hamels threw six innings and allowed two runs on six hits. He didn’t walk anyone and struck out five. He also faced the Brewers once last year, going six innings in a no decision. He allowed five hits, one walks and two runs. He struck out five. Current Brewers have 174 plate appearances against Cole and he’s held them to a .718 OPS. Ryan Braun has the most experience against Cole (47 PA, .798 OPS). Hernan Perez has the best success against him, with a 1.248 OPS in 15 PA. One guy Cole has really stopped, though in a small sample, is Mike Moustakas (nine PA, .347)
The Brewers send their best pitcher to date to the mound in Zach Davies. Zach has gotten some great results in the early going. He is 4-0 with a 1.56 ERA in 40⅓ innings. He is coming off of a win against the Mets at home. In that one, he lasted 7⅔ innings, allowing six hits, a walk and two runs. He struck out five. He was allowed to make 118 pitches in that one, so we’ll see if there is any fall out from that. He faced the Cubs earlier this year and got a no decision in a game the Brewers eventually won. He threw 5⅔ innings and allowed only two hits, two walks while holding the Cubs to two unearned runs. In three starts in 2018, Zach was 0-1 with four runs allowed in 16⅔ innings of work. Current Cubs have 251 plate appearances against Zach with a .243/.300/.749 line. Kris Bryant has both the most plate appearances and the most success (40, 1.032 OPS). Jason Heyward has struggled against Davies (25, .334).
This looks like another well-pitched game. Hopefully, the Cubs can bounce back and get their bats going.

Ericka Rios, co-founder and director of leasing at Downtown Apartment Company
Number of years in real estate: I have been in real estate for 10 years.
Describe your look: My overall look is classic, but I like to add a bit of edge with on-trend or oversized statement pieces. A beautiful lipstick is always the finishing touch.
What do you consider a fashion ‘don’t’? An oversized blazer or shirt can take the polish out of any outfit.
Is there anyone (whether it’s someone you know personally or someone in the public realm) whom you look up to or admire in terms of their style? I admire Victoria Beckham. Her elegant but simple style is iconic.
What decade or time period had the best fashion in your opinion? There are two main silhouettes I love in 1950s fashion: the wasp waist with full skirt and the slim-fitting pencil skirt.
How different are your personal and business styles? They’re pretty similar; I always carry a fitted black blazer with a great belt or accessories. Looking glam at all times is part of my everyday look.
What is your favorite piece of clothing and why? Having a well-fitted black blazer is a must! Add a great pair of black patent leather pumps and you’re ready for anything the day (or night) brings.
What do you consider a must-have accessory? My favorite go-to accessories are black and gold statement jewelry pieces, silk scarves and oversized handbags.
What is a fashion crime you have committed in the past? Not matching my belt with my shoes
What is in your bag/briefcase? Red lipstick, cell phone charger, business cards, protein bar, perfume and hand sanitizer
My closet is full of… blazers, pants, scarves, heels and handbags!
Blouse: Alice & Olivia; pants: Gucci; shoes: Gianvito Rossi; accessories (bracelet and necklace): Hermes

Edgar and Pritzker heap praise on each other
* Sneed…
“He (J.B.) knows what he doesn’t know,” said Edgar, who had been critical of incumbent GOP Gov. Bruce Rauner’s leadership style.
“That’s quality is huge. It’s the trait or characteristic of someone who is a success at what he does . . . and is very savvy,” added Edgar, a popular governor who served two terms in the ’90s. […]
“I know we will have our differences, but J.B. knows how important it is to reach out to both sides and work on the art of compromise.
“This guy listens. Really listens. And is willing to compromise.”
* Herald & Review…
Pritzker also named Republican former Gov. Jim Edgar as one of the co-chairs of his transition team.
“Although I have some disagreements with him, I think he’s somebody who’s highly capable and had a lot to offer to a new governor,” Pritzker said.
* It’s also apparent that Pritzker is holding up Edgar as an example of his own bipartisan intentions…
In an interview scheduled for broadcast Thursday (Nov. 8) on The 21st, Pritzker said he hopes Edgar’s presence will demonstrate his bipartisan intentions.
“After all the rancor and the unwillingness to work together I think it’s time that we actually started talking across the aisle — Republicans and Democrats — because we’ve got some real challenges in this state and we can only get things done for working families if we work together,” he said.
This love fest is gonna drive the Raunerites up a wall.

Pacers add second Holiday brother, sign G Justin
The Indiana Pacers added more guard help Friday in the wake of Darren Collison's recent retirement, signing a one-year, $4.8 million deal with free-agent guard Justin Holiday.
The move unites Holiday with brother Aaron, who figures to see his responsibilities at point guard increase in his second NBA season.
Justin Holiday, 30, averaged 10.5 points and had 3.9 rebounds in 82 games (77 starts) for the Chicago Bulls and Memphis Grizzlies last season. The Bulls traded him to Memphis in January.
Justin Holiday, a product of Washington, is heading into his seventh NBA season and has an 8.1 career scoring average. Aaron Holiday, 22 and a product of UCLA, averaged 5.9 points and 1.7 assists in 50 games with the Pacers last season after he was drafted No. 23 overall.
The two are also brothers of veteran New Orleans Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday.

Mickey Johnson: benched on his high school team to NBA journeyman
MJ is back with the Bulls.
Sometimes he thinks about his high flying days, the dunk contests, the triple doubles, the time he embarrassed Dr. J, the full court flights of fancy and fancy flights, taking that rebound and gliding full court, a sprinter's body with a player's intentions.
MJ leaned back, the warmth of the bright Los Angeles sun enhancing the reverie. He was traveling with the Bulls last week on the Western Conference road trip, offering a little advice as an inspirational figure and taking some time to visit some of his famous Hollywood friends from back in the old days.
"Doing some ambassador work for the Bulls," Mickey Johnson was saying. "They've allowed me to talk to some of players, offer some advice. I'm very appreciative of being able to be in this position."
No, he isn't that MJ; in fact, he was known as Rubber Band Man in a 12-year NBA career that was perhaps the most unlikely in a world of unlikely stories. "Actually my nickname in high school was BC, which meant Bony Child," Johnson said with a laugh. "I was 180 pounds my first year in the pros, 6-10 and 180."
And 40 years before his time.
Magic come into the league and I was able to guard him; I was fast enough. Magic couldn't guard me on the post up.
Mickey Johnson
Wallace "Mickey" Johnson was probably the first point forward in NBA history, though no one knew it then or quite knew what to do with him. And not only because he couldn't make his Lindblom High School team and paid his way through west suburban Aurora College trying to achieve his goal of getting into a Sears training program. But could he run, a world class sprinter in high school with a guard's ability to handle the ball and a big man's size to finish. Mickey was unique, a round peg in a very square era of NBA basketball.
You know, 6-10, you get by the basket. Little guy, you dribble.
"The game I played was what they are doing now, Scottie Pippen, KD," Johnson said. "I was just as good as the guards bringing the ball up. I was fast and could run all day, not like a typical big man at the time. That's 1975, 1976. The problem was the coaches didn't know what to do with me. I remember Norm (Van Lier) told me if I don't pass him the ball he wasn't passing it back to me. I told Norm, 'I get the ball first with the rebound. I really don't need you to bring it up and pass to me.'
"It was totally different for a big man back then," added Johnson. "Players now are slimmer and can handle the ball, things I was doing in the 70s with big man moves inside. Magic come into the league and I was able to guard him; I was fast enough. Magic couldn't guard me on the post up. But the coaches didn't understand."
Still, Johnson averaged more than 15 points for five consecutive seasons, culminating with a career high 19.1 in 1979-80 with Indiana. That was even after being benched when the team traded for an aging but popular George McGinnis. Johnson was among the league leaders in scoring at the time of his demotion and still ended the season as the team's scoring leader.
Though he never could quite escape the stigma of being from the University of Nowhere, the NBA still something of a caste system. C'mon seriously, Aurora College?
"My biggest problem probably was first time something went wrong it always was, 'Mickey didn't have the experience because he went to a small college,'" Johnson recalled. "When we lost to (eventual champion) Portland in '77, I had a bad game first game (eight for 25 for 19 points and 10 rebounds). Maurice Lucas took advantage of me, but I still led the team in scoring for the series (27.3 per game along with 13 rebounds). I was always an outsider. But I never played for the money, but that love and respect for the game. Nobody can ever say Mickey held out for this or that, cried about salary. I just played. Seeing the world from the bottom up and not top down. A lot can happen in your career, but you try not to take it personal. Do what the coach wants, be there for your teammates. From humble beginnings you can reach greatness, but that greatness can also bring you back down if you let it. It's one of the reasons the Bulls asked me here."
Tumblr media
1978: Mickey Johnson poses for a portrait.
Johnson accompanied the Bulls on their road trip at the invitation of coach Jim Boylen, who is encouraging players to understand and appreciate their ancestors. Mickey took the opportunity to spend some time with his old buddy from the Temptations, Louis Price.
He's one of those veterans who perhaps may help the Bulls get ready to find their cloud nine. Cliff Levingston, Horace Grant, Scottie Pippen, Toni Kukoc and Bob Love are some of the former Bulls bring in various ambassador and supporting roles for the team.
Boylen receives some kidding about his fondness for talking about pride in the organization, Bulls on their chest. But players like Mickey Johnson can help deliver an appreciation for the game and perhaps some perspective on where they've been and where they are going.
Especially considering Johnson's excellence in the NBA over a decade despite the most unlikely roots and a vision to give back beyond basketball.
Mickey once ran for alderman in his home 24th ward North Lawndale neighborhood. He was a coach at Malcolm X College and has run a successful business, Concerned Pest Control, and worked for the county sheriff's department for almost 20 years. He's been a citizen advocate, a businessman and motivational speaker.
He also was believed to be the only player ever to block Dr. J's dunk and one of the few to have intercepted Kareem's sky hook
"Bill Willoughby and myself are the only two to have caught the sky hook out of the air," Johnson insists. "Did that twice and Willoughby once.
"I had some hops," Mickey says with a bit of a smirk.
"You didn't dunk much back then unless you had a clear path," he said. "They'd knock you down. If you dunked you had to get out of there real quick."
Johnson was quick. He also was one of the dunkers when CBS in 1977 after that first NBA dunk contest following the merger with the ABA had a season long dunk contest at halftime of its game of the week. It was won by Darnell Hillman over Kareem, though Johnson had an array of 360s, reverse and off the backboard dunks winning in earlier rounds.
"My biggest asset, though, was my ball handling ability and speed," he says. "I was faster than most guards. I used to run the 100 as a college sprinter in maybe 10 seconds, a little less. Used to lose in the finals."
It's a heck of a sprint from a simple life on the tough West Side for a kid from a large middle class family, his dad a postal worker, who couldn't make his high school team.
"Made it my sophomore year only, but didn't play," Johnson recalls. "Coach basically wanted me to be the water boy. Played one game my sophomore year. I kept trying out and didn't make it. Played YMCA basketball, summer ball. I guess the coach just felt I wasn't talented enough. I was disappointed, but I wasn't mad. No hard feelings. He did his job. I did the best I could."
It's an equanimity that masks an athlete's heart.
They weren't scouting Aurora College then, but my stats lured some professionals...I still didn't think I'd make it. I just wanted to make the best of an opportunity if it came.
Mickey Johnson
Mickey played around the neighborhood like just about everyone else, even on a team for the high school coach who always cut him.
A neighborhood man organized a team and they'd venture out to play small college teams, like Judson, George Williams, Rockford, Aurora. Mickey could score and run down a deer, and he was now close to 6-8. Aurora coach Roald Berg said he'd help him get his degree.
"You wanted to get a college education, a job, a family and all that, typical American life," Johnson said.
"The other coaches just looked at me as a ballplayer. Coach said if I come there he would help me in trying to get a degree," Mickey said. "That's why I went there. No scholarship, NAIA Division 3. Class enrollment of maybe 600 students on and off campus. I stayed on campus to work, construction and janitorial work; my mother gave me about $300 to help. I majored in business administration and economics and got my degree. My goal was to get a job at Sears to be a buyer. I put in my application after graduation."
"What happened was (Bulls) Coach (Dick) Motta had his basketball camp there and I worked for him in the summer," said Johnson. "They weren't scouting Aurora College then, but my stats lured some professionals. I averaged 26 and 20 for four years. I wasn't getting any big publicity from the major newspapers. A couple of scouts came through going to see Billy Harris (Chicago playground legend from Dunbar High School at Northern Illinois). So they stopped to see me. One had dropped a note on the floor. My coach found. It said I couldn't make the pros.
"I didn't really feel I could make it until my senior year," Johnson agreed. "There was a little more publicity and I began to feel I'd have an opportunity. I still didn't think I'd make it. I just wanted to make the best of an opportunity if it came."

Mickey Johnson looks to move against Larry Bird.
It's something of a lesson plan Boylen also delivers these days. Take advantage of your chance. Look at Mickey.
Johnson was a surprise fourth round selection of the Portland Trailblazers in the 1974 draft, though they would cut all their draft picks other than Bill Walton. Motta remembered the kid who helped him out, so he offered a conditional third round pick for Johnson, meaning he'd have to make the team. It was more charity since Motta didn't want to keep Johnson; didn't believe he was an NBA player. Expected to keep the pick.
"He said I was a nice young man and he wanted me to have the experience of being in a pro camp," Johnson said. "He said he only had me there for a taste for the money. I made about $500 a week. It was great money. He rescued me. But I never took the Sears thing off the table. I still wanted to be a buyer, and I was working in the post office to make some money."
Johnson was last man among rookies that included highly regarded Cliff Pondexter, Leon Benbow and Bobby Wilson. Motta wanted Johnson out, but he wanted Mickey to make that decision.
"He had me run suicides, three under 30 seconds," Mickey recalled. "Then he made me run three against each individual rookie; that's nine and the three for 12. Then he made me run three more by myself in under 30 seconds. But I still did it. I wouldn't give him the excuse to cut me. I passed out. It was raining that day. Motta to this day doesn't know I passed out. I'm laying on the ground outside passed out in a puddle. He wanted me to quit, but I wasn't going to give him a reason. It's what you learn, things I can pass on."
Then good fortune came his way. Bob Love held out, Pondexter was hurt and another draft pick, Maurice Lucas, went to the ABA. Then early in the season, Motta as he was wont to do went berserk when Bill Hewitt missed a layup and the Bulls lost to the Bucks. Johnson got his job.
Mickey rarely played as a rookie as the Bulls lost in the conference finals to the Warriors. But Chet Walker retired after the season, Love held out again, Pondexter was hurt again, and Johnson hung on again. Johnson got a start and never gave up the job with the Bulls.
Tumblr media
Mickey Johnson drives on Robert Parish
He averaged at least 15 points the next four seasons with the Bulls with that unique style of play, the speed and elusiveness that is custom now and was a mystery then. He would average 14.1 points and 7.2 rebounds over those 12 seasons. Not bad for basically never having made a high school team.
Johnson went to Indiana in 1979 as one of the first free agents from the Oscar Robertson agreement that included the ABA merger. He had his best season until Indiana went sentimental. Then he bounced around, though still a unique player who played all five positions at times, Draymond Green with a shot. He posted triple doubles, played point forward for Don Nelson in Milwaukee, ran for Johnny Bach in Golden State. He finished up with the Nets in 1986 as MJ was making his mark with the Bulls.
Johnson, 66, was working around Chicago when Tina Berto with the Bulls asked if he's help with a speaking engagement. "They wanted someone else," Johnson says. "They didn't know who I was. But I told them some of the things they didn't hear from NBA players. They liked it."
So have the Bulls and Jim Boylen. Mickey Johnson showed himself and the basketball world and it's a model for these Bulls. If you never give up, you never know how far it will take you. MJ's back where he belongs.

A number of proposed cuts to the Department of Health and Human Services may be restored, following budget discussions during Monday’s City Council meeting.
Aldermen had expressed their concerns about the potential department cuts and restructuring, which are meant to help fill the city’s projected $7.4 million deficit for fiscal year 2019. Included in the original proposal was a cut of the department’s communicable disease specialist, its assistant director and a community health educator.
However, Illinois state law requires the position to be filled for the department to be recognized and receive federal and state funding. The specialist collaborates with medical providers and residents to investigate reports of infectious diseases and alert the city’s health department. They also partner with healthcare and public health agencies to control infectious disease outbreaks.
Health care providers, staff and aldermen have spoken out against the proposed cut, and at a Saturday City Council meeting, city manager Wally Bobkiewicz also urged aldermen to vote against the original draft proposal.
He echoed this sentiment at Monday’s meeting, saying the positions the city had considered for elimination were all funded by grant money rather than the general fund.
“The intent here is not to eliminate the work the health department is doing,” Bobkiewicz said. “This recommendation was only made in light of the budget deficit we’re facing.”
Health and Human Services Director Evonda Thomas-Smith said the question of classification is contingent upon a few factors. First, there are a number of mandated services the department has to administer by law — including food safety, infectious disease prevention, potable water and private sewage.
If the communicable disease surveillance specialist were to be eliminated, the department’s local classification would be at risk.
Additionally, Thomas-Smith said, the department is required to do a community-wide health assessment and community programming which allows it benefit from state money. The state certification also gets the department a number of grants and access to resources, and is contingent upon it having a community health educator.
Evanston is one of four state-certified health departments in Illinois, outside of the city of Chicago. It has been state certified from 2016 to 2021, and Thomas-Smith said the re-certification process would most likely start in 2019.
Thomas-Smith said she is unsure what would happen to Evanston’s state grants if the department were to be un-certified, Nirav Shah, the Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, told her he had never un-certified a department in the state before.
Funding from the certification and Community Development Block Grants totals $800,000 for fiscal year 2019. The $388,000 of CDBG funding is not tied to the certification, Thomas-Smith said.
Ald. Peter Braithwaite (2nd) said he was also concerned about the possible cuts in funding. He advocated for aldermen to vote to also keep the assistant director and community health educator positions in the department.
His motion ultimately failed 5-4.
“I want to express my concern for this direction,” Braithwaite said. “Over the years, the health department has been pounded on.”

Believe Your Eyes: Jacques Tourneur’s Night of the Demon – 35mm Halloween Screening
The Auditorium at Northeastern Illinois University – Building E, 3701 W. Bryn Mawr Ave General Admission: $7 • NEIU Students: $3
Wednesday, October 31 @ 7:30 PM NIGHT OF THE DEMON Directed by Jacques Tourneur • 1957 “I make films on the supernatural,” Jacques Tourneur once admitted, “and I make them because I believe in it.” Tourneur’s American career took off with a trio of stylish and suggestive horror films for RKO producer Val Lewton (Cat People, I Walked with a Zombie, and The Leopard Man), but he didn’t return to the genre again until his stature in the industry had seriously eroded in the late 1950s. Yet Night of the Demon is not the film of an artist on the ropes, but instead a finely calibrated, highly personal, and intellectually rigorous work to stand beside Tourneur’s best. Written by Hitchcock’s go-to scripter Charles Bennett, Night of the Demon dramatizes the conflict between scientific rationalism and ancient superstition with uncommon nuance and sensitivity. Dana Andrews stars as self-styled American myth-buster John Holden, who journeys to England to investigate and debunk rumors of a demon loose in the countryside. When a colleague turns up dead, Holden finds himself drawn into the occult underworld of magician, hypnotist, and occasional birthday clown Niall MacGinnis, who remains one of the most simultaneously sinister and sympathetic villains the genre has yet bequeathed. The producer showed more of the demon than Tourneur considered strictly necessary and lopped off thirteen minutes for the retitled American version, Curse of the Demon, but nothing can diminish the satanic majesty conjured in the marsh. (KW) 95 min • Associated British Picture Corp. • 35mm from Sony Pictures Repertory Preceded by: 1950s Horror Trailer Reel

Sean McVay gives great insight into how Patriots' defense won Super Bowl LIII
Sean McVay gives great insight into how Patriots' defense won Super Bowl LIII originally appeared on nbcsportsboston.com
The mere thought of the New England Patriots holding the Los Angeles Rams to just three points in Super Bowl LIII seemed crazy before kickoff, but that's exactly what unfolded at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
Los Angeles had the NFL's second-highest scoring offense in the regular season, led by star running back Todd Gurley, a strong offensive line and an offensive guru at head coach in Sean McVay. But the Patriots did an excellent job giving the Rams some different looks and schemes throughout the game, often times confusing L.A. quarterback Jared Goff and forcing him into mistakes. No mistake was more costly than his interception late in the fourth quarter that essentially sealed New England's 13-3 win.
What specifically did the Patriots do so well to slow down the Rams' high-powered offense? McVay gave a good explanation Thursday at his NFL Scouting Combine press conference in Indianapolis.
"What they did such a nice job of is they played a loaded front structure, which is something that we expected," McVay told reporters. "They went with really, the early downs, more of a top-down principle where they were playing some quarters structures, kind of similar to what (the Chicago Bears) had a little bit of success with (in their Week 14 home victory against the Rams).
"But Chicago mixed that up and did some other things. (The Patriots) kind of exclusively stayed in that in those early down and distances, and unfortunately we didn't really ever make them pay. That's where it's a great opportunity for you, No. 1 as a coach, to look inwardly and say, ‘How can we use these as learning opportunities to make sure that if these things do come up in the future, we're putting our players in a position where they're better ready to execute on the fly and adjust.'
"They were mostly playing more man principles against teams like the Chargers and Kansas City in the playoffs, and they played a little bit different front structure. Basically, against the Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game, it wasn't until like, the 22nd or 23rd snap that you even saw a snap of zone. They were mostly doubling (Chiefs wide receiver) Tyreek Hill north and south where they had somebody over the top always, and then they'd put in their good matchups with who they felt like based on, whether it was (Travis) Kelce or Sammy Watkins, (Stephon) Gilmore traveled with (Watkins). They did an excellent job, and that's what makes them great coaches. You got to tip your hat to those guys."
The Patriots defense held the Rams to just 260 yards of offense, forced one turnover and sacked Goff four times. New England also dominated in key spots as Los Angeles converted on just three of 13 third downs. The Rams coaching staff wasn't able to adjust in time and it cost Los Angeles a chance to beat Tom Brady and win the Lombardi Trophy.
McVay is a really smart coach, though, so it's hard to imagine this disappointing performance not making him better in the long run.

We have chattered about this unit twice in the past, including in October 2018 and in 2011. See the 2011 chatter here.
The building has 5 units and was built sometime between 1881 and 1900 (the two listings had different dates).
Two of them, including this one, have private entrances on Belden. The other 3 simplex units have a common entrance on Southport (see our 2011 chatter for the realtor’s notes on the building set-up.)
This unit has some of its vintage features including 12 foot vaulted ceilings and crown moldings on the first floor.
The October listing said it has had a “2017 interior renovation” but it now calls it a “newly renovated condo.”
If you recall, the first floor has a dining/sitting area, the living room and the kitchen along with arched doorways and a private back deck.
The kitchen has white cabinets, stainless steel appliances, a white tiled backsplash and what look like stone counter tops.

The second floor has two bedrooms and a laundry room.

Originally listed for $780,000 in August 2018, it has been reduced $105,000 to $675,000.
Since our October chatter, there haven’t been any price reductions.
Will 2019 be a contest of wills between owners holding onto prior pricing and the new market conditions?
Joe Green at Keller Williams Chicago-Lincoln Park now has the listing. See the pictures here.
Unit #1: 2 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, duplex up, now 1800 square feet (last listing didn’t have the square footage)

Chance The Rapper Endorses Chicago Mayoral Candidate Amara Enyia
Chance the Rapper has stepped into Chicago’s mayoral race by endorsing candidate Amara Enyia, who he said shares a vision with him of “what Chicago could be.”
The Grammy Award-winning musician and philanthropist said he’s supporting Enyia because the candidate is “about change” and “community,” among other praises.
“I want to work with somebody that’s about change, somebody that’s about our community, somebody that’s about equity, somebody that’s about fairness,” he said during a press conference at Chicago’s City Hall on Tuesday.
Enyia, who previously ran for mayor in the 2015 race, says she’s seeking a “visionary leadership that is powered by the people,” according to her campaign website.
Prior to his City Hall appearance on Tuesday, Chance tweeted a City of Chicago media advisory that announced his press conference, which sparked speculation that the “Coloring Book” artist had plans to jump in the race.
But the 25-year-old Chicago native, whose real name is Chancelor Bennett, made it clear at the news conference that he had no intentions of throwing his name in the ring. He said he “probably won’t ever be running for mayor,” according to the Associated Press.
Chance instead threw his support behind Eniya, the director of the Austin Chamber of Commerce in Chicago, who holds a law degree and a Ph.D. in education policy. She is one of more than a dozen candidates running in the race to replace Mayor Rahm Emanuel in 2019.
During the press conference, the Chicago rapper explained that his love for his hometown has motivated him to speak out on issues affecting Chicagoans and disenfranchised communities, like education and policing.
“Obviously love this city, I love it enough to call it out, on its shortcomings,” he said according to a video clip published by the Chicago Sun-Times. “I’m proud to announce that I will not be running for mayor,” he later added. “But I’d like to say very narcissistically that if I back you, you have a chance, absolutely.”
Eniya, who took the podium following Chance’s endorsement, said the rapper’s announcement was not the “typical flash-in-the-pan endorsement.”
“Today represents a commitment, the commitment that Chance and I and the hundreds of people that we’ve organized with, advocated with and worked alongside,” she said. “Today is the beginning of Chicago’s next level.”
Chance has long advocated for social change in Chicago. Last year, he donated $1 million to Chicago’s public school system. His nonprofit organization, SocialWorks, aims to empower the youth in the city through “arts, education, and civil engagement...” He’s also previously partnered with the NAACP to provide fans the opportunity to register to vote at his concerts.
When asked during the press conference about his father, Ken Bennett’s, endorsement of Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle for mayor, the rapper explained that he viewed Eniya as the “most qualified candidate,” the Sun-Times reported.
“At the end of the day, I’m always going to love my dad,” he said according to the Sun-Times. “But that has nothing to do with what I see as the future of Chicago.”
Bennett, former deputy chief to Emanuel, also previously served as White House deputy assistant under former President Barack Obama.
“There is no monolith in votes, we are all individuals, and we will all individually say who we believe can run this city correctly, can run city hall correctly, and this is who I believe is the correct person,” Chance added during the press conference. “I believe you are looking at the future mayor of Chicago.”

Cubs ripple effects from Manny Machado's deal with Padres
Cubs ripple effects from Manny Machado's deal with Padres originally appeared on nbcsportschicago.com
MESA, Ariz. - It only took until a week into spring training, but Manny Machado finally has a home, reportedly signing one of the largest deals in American sports history (10 years, $300 million) with the San Diego Padres.
So what does that mean for the Cubs?
Well for starters, it probably means PECOTA bumps them down another win or two in the 2019 projections.
But in all seriousness, this is a big deal that will have far-reaching ripple effects for the Cubs and the state of the National League playoff picture.
The Padres may not be contenders this season, but adding a player of Machado's caliber certainly puts them on the map and is a huge message to the rest of the league that they're for real.
San Diego signed Eric Hosmer to an 8-year, $144 million deal last winter and now brings in Machado to join Hosmer and Wil Myers in the middle of the order. The Padres also inked veteran Ian Kinsler to a deal this winter and added starting pitcher Garrett Richards, though he's not expected to pitch in 2019 as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.
The Padres lost 96 games a year ago, but they have the consensus top farm system in baseball and some of their best prospects are on the cusp of the big leagues.
Now that Machado is in the fold, that speeds up the rebuild and maybe they get more aggressive in bolstering their starting rotation:
Either way, it puts the Padres on the map as a team on the bubble of contention in 2019, which creates an even muddier picture in both the short- and long-term.
The NL was already going to be cloudy, with the Cubs having to compete with a division that got a whole lot better this winter. That's 5 teams going for it just from that division, plus the Phillies, Nationals, Braves and Mets in the NL East and the Dodgers, Padres and Rockies in the NL West with the Giants lingering in the background.
That's 12 of the 15 teams in the league who have at least some expectations to contend as we sit here in the first week of spring training.
It's going to be a tough road for the Cubs, but we already knew that from the division alone. And that's not even mentioning wherever Bryce Harper or the other available free agents end up.
From a direct standpoint, the Cubs only play the Padres twice a season. The two teams meet for 7 games in 2019, as Machado and Co. come to Wrigley Field July 19-21 and then the Cubs head out west for a 4-game series Sept. 9-12 as the pennant race figures to get tight down the stretch.
The Cubs were 5-2 against the Padres in 2018 and have gone 11-8 against San Diego since the start of the 2016 season.
