Chapter 3:Undercurrents Beneath the Sweetness
Jiang Shu was finally discharged from the hospital.
He returned to his studio located on the outskirts of the city,a loft transformed from an old warehouse. The space was spacious yet desolate.Outside the large floor-to-ceiling windows, electrical wires crisscrossed and distant, blurry buildings loomed in the distance. This place had once been the source of his inspiration, where he had captured countless amazing works. But now,it was filled with nothing but endless silence and emptiness,a reflection of his inner world.
Gu Yan would occasionally come to visit, always with a gentle smile, carrying some fruit or flowers, like a considerate lover. He would carefully inquire about Jiang Shu's health, care about his diet and sleep, and chat with him, listening to stories from his past.
"How do you feel after being discharged?Do you feel any discomfort?"Gu Yan sat on the sofa in Jiang Shu's studio, his gaze softly falling on Jiang Shu's face, with a hint of concern in his tone.
"I'm fine, much better than when I was in the hospital,"Jiang Shu sat opposite him,his face still somewhat pale, but his spirit seemed much better than in the hospital.
"That's good. You must take your medication on time and let me know if you feel any discomfort,"Gu Yan admonished, his tone serious and earnest, like a responsible parent instructing their child.
"Okay,I know,"Jiang Shu nodded,a warm feeling welling up inside him.He felt that Gu Yan was not just his doctor, but more like a caring lover.
After Jiang Shu's discharge, the relationship between the two had subtly changed. They were no longer just doctor and patient, but more like a couple.Gu Yan would take Jiang Shu's hand, whisper in his ear,and give him a warm hug when he was tired.Jiang Shu also began to respond to Gu Yan's tenderness, preparing a cup of coffee for him, quietly accompanying him when he was busy with work, and offering a comforting smile when he was down.
Everything seemed beautiful and sweet,as if they were the happiest couple in the world. But beneath this sweetness, there were some barely perceptible undercurrents.
Under the guise of"caring,"Gu Yan began to gradually interfere with Jiang Shu's life.
"What are your plans after being discharged?Regarding work…"Gu Yan asked casually, but his gaze was fixed on Jiang Shu's eyes.
Jiang Shu was silent for a moment, unsure of how to answer. He hadn't worked for a long time and didn't know if he still had the ability to pick up a camera and face the world again.
"I…I haven't decided yet.Maybe I'll take a break for a while,"Jiang Shu's voice was hesitant, feeling as if he had lost the ability to plan for the future.
"Taking a break is good. After all,you haven't fully recovered yet and need to take good care of yourself,"Gu Yan nodded, his tone gentle and considerate, but his next words carried a subtle hint,"However, even during your break, you should maintain a regular schedule and not confine yourself at home all the time.Going out for walks and breathing fresh air will be beneficial for your condition."
"Okay,I will,"Jiang Shu nodded, feeling that Gu Yan's words seemed to imply something, but he couldn't quite put his finger on what was wrong.
"Also,be mindful of your social interactions.I'm not saying you should cut off all contact with friends, but try to minimize contact with those who bring you negative emotions and focus more energy on your treatment,"Gu Yan continued, his tone still gentle but with a subtle undertone of dominance.
Jiang Shu's heart sank slightly, feeling that Gu Yan seemed to be hinting that he should reduce contact with certain friends. He thought of his good friend Lin Qing,a warm and cheerful girl who had selflessly helped and supported him during his most difficult times.
"Are you talking about…Lin Qing?"Jiang Shu asked tentatively, his voice a bit dry.
Gu Yan's expression froze for a moment, but quickly returned to calm.
"I'm not saying she's bad,but I think she might not fully understand how you're feeling right now. What you need now is peace and rest, not too much disturbance,"Gu Yan explained, his tone sincere and patient,as if he was really thinking for Jiang Shu.
Jiang Shu was silent, not knowing how to refute.Gu Yan's words seemed reasonable, but he felt something was off.He remembered the words Lin Qing had once said to him, those words that encouraged him to cheer up and supported him in picking up the camera again.
"Maybe…"Jiang Shu eventually chose to compromise. He didn't want to argue with Gu Yan;he was afraid of losing this rare warmth.
Gu Yan seemed satisfied with Jiang Shu's response, nodded, and revealed a gentle smile.
"I'm relieved to hear that.Remember, the most important thing for you now is to rest well and recover soon.Only when you're better can we have a longer future together,"Gu Yan said softly, with a subtle hint of possessiveness in his tone.
Jiang Shu's heartbeat quickened slightly. He felt that Gu Yan's words seemed to carry a special meaning, giving him a sense of sweetness but also a vague sense of unease.
In addition to interfering with Jiang Shu's social life,Gu Yan also began to offer more and more"suggestions"on his photographic works.
"I've looked at some of the photos you've taken recently.Hmm…they seem a bit too gloomy, lacking some positive elements,"Gu Yan sat in Jiang Shu's studio, flipping through his recently shot works, his brows slightly furrowed, seemingly dissatisfied with the photos.
Jiang Shu's mood immediately became somewhat heavy. He knew that his works had always carried a somewhat gloomy tone,a true reflection of his inner world, and he thought Gu Yan would understand.
"Is that so?I…I just feel that this is the world I see now,"Jiang Shu's voice was a bit hoarse, with a subtle hint of defense.
"I understand that your work is an expression of your inner world, but that doesn't mean you can only see the dark side,"Gu Yan said patiently, his tone still gentle but with an undeniable undertone."You should try to discover the beauty in life and capture those bright moments with your lens.It will also be helpful for your condition."
Jiang Shu was silent, feeling that Gu Yan's words seemed to negate his creative style and the way he expressed his pain.He began to doubt whether he really had the ability to produce"bright"works and whether he could truly please Gu Yan.
"Maybe…maybe you're right.I'll try to change,"Jiang Shu eventually chose to compromise again. He didn't want to disappoint Gu Yan;he wanted to become the"better"person in Gu Yan's eyes.
Gu Yan seemed satisfied with Jiang Shu's response, nodded, and revealed an approving smile.
"I'm relieved to hear that.Remember, your work is not only your own expression but also a bridge for you to communicate with the world. You should use your lens to convey positive energy and inspire more people,"Gu Yan said softly, his tone gentle yet firm,as if guiding a lost lamb.
Jiang Shu nodded, feeling as if an invisible pressure was pressing down on him, making it hard to breathe. He began to try to cater to Gu Yan's preferences, attempting to produce"bright"works, but he found himself increasingly losing direction and himself.
He started to become unrecognizable to himself.
He stopped taking moody, poetic city nightscapes and began to shoot bright, sunny landscapes;he stopped focusing on souls struggling in the dark and turned to faces with radiant smiles. His works became increasingly mediocre and soulless, and he felt himself gradually losing his unique style and voice.
But he dared not tell Gu Yan.He was afraid that Gu Yan would be disappointed and leave him.He was too afraid of loneliness, too afraid of falling back into the abyss of darkness.
So,he could only endure silently, cater silently, and gradually lose himself in Gu Yan's"love."
He didn't know how long this would last or how long he could hold on.He only knew that his heart was dying bit by bit.

Split Love
Chapter 2:Weaving the Trap of Tenderness
In the following days,Gu Yan's"special"attention to Jiang Shu became even more evident. He would set aside more time each day to visit the ward, patiently inquiring about Jiang Shu's medical condition and psychological state, encouraging him to speak more and express his feelings.Gu Yan would also take the initiative to discuss topics related to photography with Jiang Shu,sharing his views on certain photographic works and even bringing in photography albums to enjoy together.
"The light and shadow treatment in this photo is very delicate.Look at the contrast between light and dark here.It not only highlights the outline of the subject but also creates a mysterious atmosphere…"Gu Yan pointed to a photo in a photography album and explained softly. His voice was deep and magnetic, with a unique charm.
Jiang Shu listened quietly. It had been a long time since he had focused so intently on appreciating photographic works.Gu Yan's explanation was easy to understand and insightful, rekindling his interest in photography. He began to try sharing his own thoughts and some of the works he had previously taken.
"I used to love taking pictures of city nightscapes, especially on rainy nights. The neon lights reflecting on the wet ground create a kind of hazy light and shadow that always gave me a special feeling…"Jiang Shu's voice gradually softened, and a rare smile appeared on his face.
Gu Yan looked at Jiang Shu,a fleeting trace of tenderness flashing in his eyes.He noticed that when Jiang Shu talked about photography,he became a different person—his eyes sparkled, and his voice became more lively.
"The nightscapes you took must be very beautiful,"Gu Yan said softly, his tone filled with encouragement and anticipation.
"Not bad…"Jiang Shu smiled a little shyly, but a trace of pride flickered in his eyes.
In addition to discussing photography,Gu Yan would also share some of his own daily life details with Jiang Shu,such as the music he liked, the movies he enjoyed, and the books he read. These seemingly trivial topics made Jiang Shu feel an unprecedented sense of closeness. He realized that Gu Yan was not just a doctor but also someone with a rich inner world and unique aesthetics.
"I've been listening to Debussy's'Clair de Lune'lately. The hazy and melancholic melody always reminds me of many past events…"Leaning against the window of the ward,Gu Yan hummed softly. His voice was deep and magnetic,as if narrating a distant and beautiful dream.
Jiang Shu listened quietly, feeling his heart being gently caressed by the music, becoming soft and calm.He began to look forward to spending time with Gu Yan every day,to hearing his voice, and to seeing his smile.
Under Gu Yan's meticulous care,Jiang Shu's condition gradually stabilized, and his mental state improved significantly. He began to actively request to get out of bed and even suggested taking a walk in the hospital garden.
"Of course, but be careful not to walk too far or tire yourself out,"Gu Yan smiled and agreed to Jiang Shu's request, accompanying him to the garden himself.
The hospital garden was filled with a variety of flowers and plants.Although they were not particularly rare, they looked especially vibrant under the sunlight.Jiang Shu took a deep breath, feeling the long-lost scent of soil and flowers. It seemed as if his lungs had been washed by the fresh air, becoming much lighter.
"The air here is so good,"Jiang Shu said softly,a rare smile appearing on his face.
"Yes,getting out and walking around is good for your condition,"Gu Yan replied with a smile, his gaze gently resting on Jiang Shu's face.
The two walked slowly in the garden, with Gu Yan patiently listening to Jiang Shu's stories about his past life, his photography experiences, his dreams, and his pursuits.Jiang Shu also began to try to understand Gu Yan,discovering that although he seemed gentle and steady,he seemed to be hiding some unknown secrets deep inside.
"You're so busy with work.Do you have time to rest?Do you have any particular hobbies?"Jiang Shu asked curiously.
Gu Yan was silent for a moment,as if thinking about how to answer.
"My hobbies are quite simple—reading books, listening to music, and occasionally taking walks in quiet places,"Gu Yan said softly, his tone carrying a faint hint of hesitation.
"Quiet places?Like where?"Jiang Shu pressed, sensing that Gu Yan seemed to be holding back.
"Like…some remote ancient towns or secluded forests,"Gu Yan's eyes flickered slightly,as if avoiding Jiang Shu's questioning.
Jiang Shu keenly noticed Gu Yan's unease, but he did not continue to press. He felt that everyone has their own secrets, and perhaps Gu Yan just didn't want to talk about them.
The brief time out of the hospital was always beautiful, but also fleeting.Although Jiang Shu's condition had improved, there was still a long way to go before a full recovery. Before discharge,Gu Yan specifically instructed him on many precautions, including taking medication on time, maintaining a regular schedule, and returning to the hospital for regular follow-ups.
"Remember, you must take your medication on time and not stop or reduce it without permission,"Gu Yan stood at the ward door, earnestly instructing Jiang Shu.His tone was serious and caring, like a responsible parent admonishing a child about to embark on a journey.
"I understand,I'll remember,"Jiang Shu nodded,a strange sense of emotion welling up inside him.He felt that Gu Yan was not just his doctor but more like a caring friend, someone he could trust.
"Also,if you feel any discomfort or emotional fluctuations,be sure to let me know.Don't tough it out alone,"Gu Yan continued, his eyes carrying a faint trace of worry.
"Okay,I will,"Jiang Shu nodded again, feeling his throat tighten. He wanted to say many words of gratitude but couldn't get a single word out.
"Well,it's getting late. You should go back and rest early,"Gu Yan gently patted Jiang Shu's shoulder, his action gentle and natural, like an elder brother comforting his younger brother.
"You should rest early too.Thank you,Gu Yan,"Jiang Shu said softly, his voice filled with sincere gratitude.
"Don't mention it.It's my duty,"Gu Yan replied with a smile, his smile still gentle and sincere.
Jiang Shu turned and left the ward.He glanced back at Gu Yan standing at the door, who was also looking at him with a gentle and calm gaze.A strange emotion welled up inside Jiang Shu.He didn't know how to describe it,but he knew it was warm and full of hope.
He thought, perhaps, his rainy season was really about to end.

Split Love
Chapter 1:The Illusion of Initial Tenderness
Gloomy raindrops drummed against the hospital ward window, producing a monotonous and oppressive sound, much like Jiang Shu's current state of mind. The gray, overcast sky seemed like a vast curtain, blocking out all light and leaving only a suffocating heaviness. He lay curled up on the hospital bed,his white patient gown appearing particularly loose, further accentuating his thin frame and pale complexion. His gaze fell vacantly on the window,as if through the layers of rain,he could see his own shattered and desperate inner self.
Jiang Shu had once again found himself here. This ward was all too familiar to him, even to the point of being repulsive. The pungent smell of disinfectant, the pale walls, and the incessant dripping sound all felt like invisible shackles, firmly imprisoning him in this cage called"depression."He was a photographer, someone who had once captured countless beautiful moments through his lens, but now,he couldn't even muster the strength to press the shutter. His works, once praised by critics as"full of spirituality"and"touching the soul,"now seemed to him nothing but empty and ironic.
The door was gently pushed open, breaking the suffocating silence.Jiang Shu didn't look up;he had grown accustomed to this kind of silence,to shutting himself off from the outside world and rejecting everything. He knew that the nurse had come for a routine check,to deliver medication,or simply to confirm that he was still alive.
"Mr.Jiang Shu,hello,"a gentle and deep male voice rang out, with a hint of magnetism that was barely perceptible.
Jiang Shu's body trembled slightly as he slowly lifted his head and looked in the direction of the voice.Standing at the door was a young doctor in a white lab coat.He had an upright figure,a handsome face, and delicate, profound features. His eyes, like a calm lake, were clear and gentle,as if they could see through people's hearts. He wore a pair of gold-rimmed glasses, adding to his elegance and composure.A faint smile played at the corners of his mouth, giving a refreshing and warm feeling.
Jiang Shu's heart, like a still lake, rippled slightly as if a stone had been thrown into it.He hadn't felt such calm and gentle care for a long time;his world seemed to be filled only with endless darkness and pain.
"Hello,"Jiang Shu's voice was hoarse and weak, with a barely perceptible tremble.
"I am your attending physician,Gu Yan,"the doctor said as he walked into the ward and placed the medical file on the bedside table. His movements were gentle and slow,as if he were afraid of disturbing Jiang Shu's fragile inner self.
"Gu Yan…"Jiang Shu murmured the name, which sounded like a strange note in his long-silent world, carrying a meaning that he himself could not quite discern.
Gu Yan pulled up a chair and sat beside the bed,his gaze always gentle and resting on Jiang Shu's face, without any impatience or probing, just pure concern and understanding.
"How are you feeling? Are you uncomfortable anywhere today?"Gu Yan's voice remained soft, with a power to soothe the heart.
Jiang Shu was silent for a moment. He didn't know how to answer. His discomfort was not just physical but also emotional. He felt empty, desperate, and in pain,as if the whole world was against him.
"I…I don't know,"Jiang Shu eventually chose to be honest. He didn't want to pretend in front of Gu Yan;he longed for this sincere care.
Gu Yan did not seem surprised. He nodded and continued to ask gently,"Can you tell me why you are here this time?I mean, the reason for this hospitalization."
Jiang Shu's eyes dimmed as he closed them and took a deep breath,as if trying to inhale all the pain into his lungs.
"I…I relapsed,"Jiang Shu's voice was so low it was almost inaudible, tinged with a barely concealed self-mockery.
"Relapse…"Gu Yan repeated the word softly. His brow furrowed slightly but quickly smoothed out again. He knew that for someone with depression,"relapse"was a truly desperate word.It meant that all efforts had been in vain and that one had to fall back into the abyss of darkness once more.
"Can you tell me what happened before this relapse?"Gu Yan's voice remained gentle, with a patient and guiding tone.
Jiang Shu was silent for a long time.He didn't know where to start. His life was like a tangled mess, intertwined with endless pain and despair. He had lost his passion for creation, his enthusiasm for life, and even the courage to live.
"I…I can't take photos anymore,"Jiang Shu's voice was hoarse and painful,with a hint of choking."I don't know why.When I pick up the camera,I can't capture anything.The world I see is only gray and ugly.I…I feel like I'm already dead."
Gu Yan listened quietly, his gaze always gentle and resting on Jiang Shu's face, without any judgment, only deep understanding and sympathy. He knew that for a photographer, the inability to take photos meant more than just losing a job;it meant losing a way to express oneself and a bridge to connect with the world.
"I have seen some of your previous works,"Gu Yan suddenly spoke, breaking the suffocating silence.
Jiang Shu was slightly stunned. He looked up at Gu Yan with some surprise.
"Those…those photos?"Jiang Shu's voice carried a hint of uncertainty. It had been a long time since he had heard anyone mention his works. He had even begun to doubt whether he had ever truly captured those beautiful moments.
"Yes,those photos,"Gu Yan's lips curled into a faint smile, his eyes filled with appreciation and admiration."Full of spirituality and touching the soul—many people have given such evaluations of your works.I personally also like them very much, especially your use of light and shadow, which is very distinctive."
Jiang Shu's eyes widened slightly. He could hardly believe his ears.It had been a long time since he had heard such praise. He had always thought that his works, like his depression, had fallen into the abyss of darkness.
"Thank you…"Jiang Shu's voice was still hoarse, but it carried a barely perceptible note of gratitude. He felt as if a faint ray of light had illuminated his heart, bringing a long-lost warmth.
"You're welcome,"Gu Yan shook his head, his gaze still gentle and sincere."Those photos are expressions of your inner world. They are beautiful and fragile, just like you."
Jiang Shu's heart trembled slightly. He felt that Gu Yan's words had touched the softest part of his inner self.He had always thought that no one could understand his pain, that no one could see the vulnerability deep within him,but Gu Yan seemed to have done just that.
"Do you…do you really think so?"Jiang Shu's voice trembled with a longing for affirmation from Gu Yan,for understanding and acceptance.
"Of course I do,"Gu Yan's tone was firm and gentle."Your works, your inner self, all deserve to be cherished and treated well."
Jiang Shu's eyes became slightly moist. He felt as if a warm current had enveloped his heart, and the door to his long-closed heart seemed to loosen a bit.
"Thank you,Dr.Gu,"Jiang Shu's voice choked, his throat tightening. He wanted to say many words of gratitude but couldn't utter a single one.
"Don't call me Dr.Gu.Call me Yan instead,"Gu Yan said with a smile, his expression gentle and sincere,as if it could dispel all the gloom.
"Yan…"Jiang Shu softly repeated the name.It no longer felt strange to him but carried a sense of warmth and familiarity, like an old friend, someone he could rely on.
Gu Yan stood up,walked to the window, and looked at the still gloomy sky outside.
"The rain will stop soon,"Gu Yan said softly, his voice deep and magnetic,as if narrating a distant story.
"Okay,"Jiang Shu nodded.Watching Gu Yan's back,he suddenly felt an inexplicable sense of peace. He felt that this doctor named Gu Yan might really be able to lead him out of this dark rainy season.
The rain seemed to have lessened indeed.
