Important Quotes from GRRM

Those were the two most popular characters to build everything around, except you’re losing 90 percent of the story. “ - Rollingstone 2014

These two quotes are probably the most important quotes from George because he plainly states that the story is not just about Jon/Dæny. George narrows them down to being only 10% of the story. Are they important? Yes. But so are a host of other characters.

Death does not make you stronger or nicer. Applying this to Jon, he is not the same and never will be.

Leaving Lady Stoneheart out was something George feels is a big mistake, we can assume that Lady Stoneheart is integral to the storyline in the unreleased books.

It had been years since I wrote a novel. I had an idea for a science-fiction novel called ”Avalon. The Starks sparked the idea, and are at the very root of the story, but not the entire story. This also emphasizes that this book is not just about a bastard and dragon. +Bran is important, though the show fails to portray this.

“You have to remember that I started writing this story in 1991 and I first met David and Dan in 2007. I was living with these characters and this world for 16 years before we even started working on the show. They’re pretty fixed in my mind and I’m not going to change anything because of the show, or reaction to the show, or what fans think. I’m just still writing the story that I set out to write in the early 1990s.” - Time Magazine, 2017

Putting these quotes together because they’re implying similar things. 

George has a view of where he’s going but that doesn’t mean things can’t be reimagined. For an example, George’s original outline is almost completely different from the books we have now, but a few parts of the outline are still there, but taking shape in different characters.

“I did consider in the very early stages not having the dragons in there. I wanted the Targaryen’s symbol to be the dragons, but I did play with the notion that maybe it was like a psionic power, that it was pyrokinesis — that they could conjure up flames with their minds. I went back and forth. My friend and fellow fantasy writer Phyllis Eisenstein actually was the one who convinced me to put the dragons in, and I dedicated the third book to her. “In some senses, Theon is struggling all the way through to be a hero. They both come out of the same situation: they’re both raised in Winterfell by Eddard Stark, but they’re not part of the real, core family. Theon is a ward, and Jon Snow is a bastard son. This quote brings the Season 7 scene with Jon and Theon to mind. Theon tells Jon that he always made the right decision, while Theon made the wrong decisions (choosing the Greyjoys over the Stark family that raised him). Jon will make the right decision.

“So many readers were reading the books with so much attention that they were throwing up some theories, and while some of those theories were amusing bulls— and creative, some of the theories are right. At least one or two readers had put together the extremely subtle and obscure clues that I’d planted in the books and came to the right solution.“ -The Telegraph, 2014

Extremely Subtle and obscure hints; George’s bittersweet ending will not be predictable. Only a few people have figured out the ending. If your predicted ending involves ultimate good (humans) vs ultimate evil (others), you already lost.

Believe it or not, I’m usually very anti-drama and anti-judgement. I am very much a “ship and let ship” person, I believe everyone is entitled to ship who and what they ship, enjoy their fandoms the way they want, and to just have fun, granted it does not hurt anyone else. I have said so many times on my blog, even saying that I think Jonerys shippers have every reason to ship their ship.

But never before have I been in a fandom/ship like this - where people will search out my blog and posts with the sole intention of harassing me, mocking me, screenshoting my posts to be posted on Reddit, Pinterest, or anti blogs. Never before have I ever felt so unsafe to openly talk about my favorite ship, or my favorite theories. Simply going to a certain subreddit makes me feel ostracized, belittled, attacked and ridiculed simply for being me. At Con of Thrones I was afraid to talk about Jonsa, and when I was “outed” during a panel, I felt ashamed, ridiculed and put on the spot, when other crackships did not receive the same attention.

The amount of hate and vitriol pointed at me put me on the defensive. The amount of people coming into my space and my friends space has made me upset. I have never ever in my life sent anon hate. I have never ever in my life searched the Jonerys tag, or tagged Jonerys on my posts, to attack other people on their posts or mock them. I have never ever said that someone else was delusional or disgusting due to their theory or ship preference. I’ve never been crazy enough to believe that my opinions are more important than someone else’s.

But I do have my theories. I do have my opinions. I do have my NoTPs. I do have my limits. But I have never tried to force those opinions on someone else, or gone out of my way to mock someone else for having a different opinion than my own. No one is perfect. I reserve my right to talk about my opinions and my theories and to enjoy talking about them with other people. I refuse to shrink away and free up the space for those who hate me. I want to be able to talk about my opinions freely, and without harassment or ridicule.

It’s the animosity thrown at the Jonsa ship that makes me more defensive. It’s the constant belittling and the push back that makes me even more determined to feel I have to prove why I believe what I believe. It’s the constant wear down that makes me celebrate so hard when something happens that grows the evidence that I’m not crazy. The anti’s fuel me. I don’t think I would be so vocal about my ship if I didn’t feel like I had to defend it at every turn.

So for those people who seem to think I’m addicted to drama or negativity, I would ask you to look at my entire post history. To see what I actually stand for. To interact with me outside of this ship that constantly feels like it has to be on the defensive due to the unnecessary hate thrown at it.

How Much that Deleted Ghost Scene Informs the Narrative

Jon and Ghost’s deleted scene is a pretty big deal. 

Here is what Jon and Sansa’s timeline looks like now;

Jon says “where will we go” to Sansa;

Jon mentions how Ned’s ghost would kill him if he left her;

Jon promises to protect Sansa;

Jon is saved in the BoTB by Sansa;

Jon gives the lord’s chambers to Sansa;

Jon declared KiTN; [end of season 6]

Jon declares the North is a part of him;

Jon gives the North to Sansa;

Jon goes to Ned’s statue in the crypts;

Jon threatens to kill LF and chokes him;

Jon tells Ghost to watch over Sansa;

Jon shares goodbye wave

So here’s how the Ghost scene really ties their bond together;

Jon has promised to protect her. He also thinks of Ned. Jon knows he must go to Dragonstone to win an alliance - but the crypt scene becomes almost 99.99999% confirmation that he is wrestling with leaving because of his duty to Sansa.

He trusts her to administer…but he can’t leave without her having a piece of him there to protect her. Jon knows the promise he made to Sansa and what Ned would think of him leaving. That’s why he’s in the crypt.

Sequentially he gives the North to Sansa —> goes to the crypt to see Ned’s statue in contemplation of his earlier promise to Sansa —> identifies LF as a threat to Sansa and chokes him and threatens to kill him —> follows that up by telling Ghost to protect Sansa (Ghost being his conduit and an extension of himself) —> shares the goodbye wave with Sansa.

So holy shit is that heavy with Jonsa content. His threat against LF’s life is no longer an empty threat if he’s leaving Ghost with Sansa. His promise to protect Sansa remains fulfilled. His conscience is ever so slightly more clear in the knowledge that a part of him is still in WF watching over Sansa. The only reason to pull back on showing Jon and Sansa becoming so interconnected is to keep the viewers from speculating on a romantic relationship. If this was just about Jon being a sweet brother and his platonic love for his sister, this would have been excellent content. But if a Jon and Sansa ending is meant to surprise the audience? That’s another story…

It’s beautiful. And terribly obvious what is going on for the viewers. I truly believe that’s why they cut the scene.
